Next, there were two rather more than middle-aged Frenchmen, who, I suspect, once more, were of the class called "commis voyageurs," and who played a grand part in our drama. Next, a pretty young woman, who looked to be about two or three and twenty years of age, and had for a son a forward, rude, presumptuous urchin of, perhaps, seven years old, and for a husband, a gentleman who, in all our steam-boat business, filled the place of a sleeping partner, for he lay stretched on one of the benches all the time, and was neither diverted nor annoyed by the pranks of his little wife. Then there was our captain, a rude, old sailor of the navy, who very reasonably entertained a keen, and most vengeful antipathy to the good people of England; an antipathy which even his politeness, as master of his own wooden house, could not conceal.
