Book Letters from the Canary Islands Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters from the Canary Islands Classic Reprint written by Daniel Jay Browne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From the Canary Islands Nor is the animal world destitute of interest here. Not withstanding the detached situation, and the narrow limits of these islands, they formerly contained large bands of wild beasts, most of the Species of which, have either been extirpated or reclaimed but they were not of such vast numbers, nor of that savage character as those which per vade almost every tract of the adjacent continent. They were for the most part creatures innocent, gentle, and beautiful. Large packs of wild dogs of a ferocious char acter appear to have been found here; but it is not allowed that they constituted the true species in a state of nature, but that they descended from dogs once domesticated, which have relapsed into a state resembling that of primi tive wildness. Although the limited range, the arid aspect, and the fiery summits which these islands present, would cause one to suppose that they are unfavorable to the existence and propagation of the feathered tribes, yet many a cliff, many a tree, and many a verdant spot, afford appropriate recesses for this fairy race. To these islands we are indebted for some of our sweetest songsters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of a Residence in the Canary Islands, the South of Spain, and Algiers: Illustrative of the State of Religion in Those Countries The Author is not acquainted with any popular account of the Canary Islands. The Old quarto work of Glass is found in some libraries; but, excepting this, there is no English work specifi cally upon these Islands, which constitute a pro vince of Spain. Short, and, in many respects, unsatisfactory, as the Author's sojourn in Algiers was, he thinks the clerical reader may find some matters of interest in 'his remarks upon that country, Which is indeed the ancient site' of those Churches which, at the end of the fourth and the beginning of the fifth century were amongst the most dis tinguished in Christendom. Book The Canarian Or Book of the Conquest and Conversion of the Canarians in the Year Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Canarian Or Book of the Conquest and Conversion of the Canarians in the Year Classic Reprint written by Pierre Bontier and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canarian, or Book of the Conquest and Conversion of the Canarians in the Year It is a remarkable fact that in the proud list of the glories of noble France there is one class of achievements for which she has claimed more, and at the same time received less, honour than she really deserves. She has put forth a claim to having preceded even Prince Henry of Portugal in lifting the veil from the Sea of Darkness, the mysterious Atlantic, and in colonising the west coast of Africa; but although the most illustrious of her claimants to this distinction, the learned M. d'Avezac, still clings lovingly to his patriotic convictions on this head, the present writer has already demonstrated that that claim can by no means be maintained. At the same time France is very far from having received the amount of honour which is her due for the boldness of her maritime explorations at a somewhat later but still very early period.
