Book Detailed Design of a Ride Quality Augmentation System for Commuter Aircraft

Download or read book Detailed Design of a Ride Quality Augmentation System for Commuter Aircraft written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of a Ride Quality Augmentation System (RQAS) for commuter aircraft is documented. The RQAS is designed for a Cessna 402B, an 8 passenger prop twin representative to this class of aircraft. The purpose of the RQAS is the reduction of vertical and lateral accelerations of the aircraft due to atmospheric turbulence by the application of active control. The detailed design of the hardware (the aircraft modifications, the Ride Quality Instrumentation System (RQIS), and the required computer software) is examined. The aircraft modifications, consisting of the dedicated control surfaces and the hydraulic actuation system, were designed at Cessna Aircraft by Kansas University-Flight Research Laboratory. The instrumentation system, which consist of the sensor package, the flight computer, a Data Acquisition System, and the pilot and test engineer control panels, was designed by NASA-Langley. The overall system design and the design of the software, both for flight control algorithms and ground system checkout are detailed. The system performance is predicted from linear simulation results and from power spectral densities of the aircraft response to a Dryden gust. The results indicate that both accelerations are possible. Suikat, Reiner and Donaldson, Kent E. and Downing, David R. Book Design of a Digital Ride Quality Augmentation System for Commuter Aircraft

Download or read book Design of a Digital Ride Quality Augmentation System for Commuter Aircraft written by Terry A. Hammond and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was initiated based on the goal of making the ride of the commuter aircraft as smooth as the ride experienced on the major commercial airliners. The objectives of this project were to design a digital, longitudinal mode ride quality augmentation system (RQAS) for a commuter aircraft, and to investigate the effect of selected parameters on those designs. The initial stage of this research was the development of an interactive control augmentation design (ICAD) program for use in the design and evaluation of the candidate RQASs. This computer aided design program included both optimal and classical design approaches for either continuous or digital systems, and provided data for analyses in both the time and frequency domains. Both optimal and classical RQAS designs were generated for the five flight conditions selected as representative of a typical commuter mission, using a Cessna 402B. These RQASs used direct lift flaps and the elevator for control of the longitudinal accelerations. The design parameters selected include the sample time, computation delay time, servo bandwidth, and the flap and elevator control power. Optimal and classical point designs, based on the nominal design parameters, are presented for all five flight conditions. Parametric analyses for all five flight condition for both the optimal and classical designs are also presented.

Book A Technique for the Evaluation of Aircraft Ride Quality

Download or read book A Technique for the Evaluation of Aircraft Ride Quality written by John W. Rustenburg and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience has shown that the aircraft gust sensitivity index A, defined as the root mean square (RMS) acceleration response per unit of RMS gust velocity does not provide a consistent measure of aircraft ride quality. Ride quality is also influenced by variation in the frequency spectrum of the vibration environment and time of exposure. A ride quality evaluation technique is presented which includes consideration of frequency effects on human discomfort, exposure time, and variation of the vibration environment during a mission. This technique can be used to evaluate ride quality of existing aircraft as well as to provide ride quality criteria for new aircraft designs. It can be applied to military as well as commercial aircraft. (Author).
