VV. and published by Gangemi Editore spa. This book was released on 2016-12-04T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Interventi di: Marisa Albanese, Maria Grazia Bellisario, Gabriella Bocconi, Giorgio Bonsanti, Gregorio Botta, Eugenio Carlomagno, Roberto Cassanelli, Giovanna Cassese, Angela Cipriani, Giorgio Bruno Civello, Biancaneve Codacci Pisanelli, Silvia Costa, Guido Curto, Marisa Dalai Emiliani, Fernando dalla Chiesa, Gaetano Daniele, Armando De Stefano, Stefano De Stefano, Paola Del Vescovo, Ignazio Di Bella, Marco Di Capua, Fabio Donato, Andrea Emiliani, Luigi Ficacci, Luigi Fiorentino, Luciano Formica, Mario Franco, Eleonora Frattarolo, Cristina Frulli, Giuseppe Furlanis, Maria Antonella Fusco, Gian Luca Galletti, Omar Galliani, Mauro Giancaspro, Corinna Giudici, Augusto Giuffredi, Sebastiano Guerrera, Daniele Jalla, Anna Vittoria Laghi, Rocco Lazzaro, Marco Mancini, Riccardo Mazzarino, Gioia Mori, Luigi Nicolais, Marco Nocca, Anty Pansera, Virgilio Piccari, Luca Pignatelli, Paolo Rosa, Valter Rosa, Camilla Roversi Monaco, Anna Russo, Sileno Salvagnini, Lucio Alberto Savoia, Sergio Sciarelli, Vittorio Sgarbi, Aurora Spinosa, Gabriella Spizzuoco, Maria Luisa Storchi, Giuseppe Sylos Labini, Paola Taddei, Gloria Vallese, Francesca Valli, Fabrizio Vona, Luigi Zangheri, Francesco Ziosi.

Book excerpt: Two unaccompanied children travel across the Mediterranean in an overcrowded boat that has been designed to only make it halfway across… A 63-year-old man is woken one morning by border officers ‘acting on a tip-off’ and, despite having paid taxes for 28 years, is suddenly cast into the detention system with no obvious means of escape… An orphan whose entire life has been spent in slavery – first on a Ghanaian farm, then as a victim of trafficking – writes to the Home Office for help, only to be rewarded with a jail sentence and indefinite detention… These are not fictions. Nor are they testimonies from some distant, brutal past, but the frighteningly common experiences of Europe’s new underclass – its refugees. While those with ‘citizenship’ enjoy basic human rights (like the right not to be detained without charge for more than 14 days), people seeking asylum can be suspended for years in Kafka-esque uncertainty. Here, poets and novelists retell the stories of individuals who have direct experience of Britain’s policy of indefinite immigration detention. Presenting their accounts anonymously, as modern day counterparts to the pilgrims’ stories in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, this book offers rare, intimate glimpses into otherwise untold suffering.

Book The City in Late Antiquity

Download or read book The City in Late Antiquity written by Dr John Rich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city was the nexus of the Roman Empire in its early centuries. The City in Late Antiquity charts the change undergone by cities as the Empire was weakened by the third-century crisis, and later disintegrated under external pressures. The old picture of the classical city as everywhere in decline by the fourth century is shown to be far too simple, and John Rich seeks to explain why urban life disappeared in some regions, while elsewhere cities survived through to the Middle Ages and beyond.

Book excerpt: FREDERICK THE SECOND is the story of the remarkable man whose power and sphere of influence straddled the worlds of Christendom and of Islam. The last of the Hohenstaufens, HolyRoman Emperor and King of Sicily and Jerusalem, Frederick II was an energetic and versatile ruler, a man of great ambition in whose lifetime the conflict between Emperor and Pope reached a newintensity. Excommunicated three times by the Church, he was an absolute monarch whose power, defended in almost continuous struggle, extended over much of Germany and Italy as well as the Holy Land. Frederick was a complex man of cultured tastes and licentious manners who had unusually wide intellectual interests. At his Sicilian court scholars of all religions were welcomed--Christian, Jewish, Mohammedan. He founded the University of Naples in 1224 and was a patron of the arts and sciences. The life of this dynamic man is fully explored in Ernst Kantorowicz's notable biography, filled with dramatic incident and absorbing detail, and written with style and scholarship.
