Book Richmond Her Past and Present Classic Reprint

Download or read book Richmond Her Past and Present Classic Reprint written by W. Asbury Christian and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richmond, Her Past and Present The history of a city is largely the history of a State, and this is especially true when that city is the Capital of the State. Rich mond can claim an historical inheritance greater than this: her history is peculiarly interwoven with that of the United States, both at its formative period and at the great crisis that threatened the existence of the Union. Being the Capital of the Confederacy, she was from the beginning of the Civil War to the end the most notable city of the country at that time. No city in America, there fore, is richer in historical interest than is Richmond. In addition to this she has a local history of men and movements which is of especial value to every one connected with the city who appreciates the efforts of the fathers to bequeath to them a beautiful, well-built and well-ordered place of habitation. I have undertaken to trace this history from the time the white man first appeared on the banks of the Powhatan and in honor of his sovereign called it the James, until to-day. With a wealth of material and a limited space, it has been difficult to thread my way along the years and to know what to leave out and what to put in the book. It has been my purpose to represent every phase of the city's life and to tell something of interest to the people of every class - professional, commercial, industrial and social. At the risk of being tedious I have given the names of the men back of the movements in order that we may become acquainted with the builders of our city as they come before the eyes of the public. The names of many worthy citizens have not been mentioned because they did not happen to come before the public vision. I have told of a few crimes which have been so notorious as to become a part of the history and many I have omitted. My purpose has been to spare as much as possible the feelings of those connected with the criminals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richmond: Its People and Its StoryReaders from a distance who would like to know Richmond better are cordially invited to come in spring with the pansies and irises, when bees are swinging in linden blossoms, or in early summer when roses are embow ering porches, or later, when blooms like the lucious hearts of ripe watermelons glow in crepe-myrtle boughs, or in autumn when maples are ablaze in streets and in parks. At any of these seasons long sections of many streets will be shady green arbors. You will be equally welcome if you come in Winter, but do not be surprised if a cold wave has, for a day or perhaps a week, tucked this city which the sun loves into a blanket of snow and fringed it with icicles.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book On to Richmond Classic Reprint written by Dept; Of New Jersey Grand Army Republic and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On to Richmond! We, as old veteran soldiers, took this trip of ours not so much for the mere sake of recreation, as for the purpose of recalling the incidents connected with the late war. While history records all the facts of the war, they are in a general sense, and are not confined to incidents along the line of the march of the Gratitude. We purpose to relate, brie y, important incidents which occurred along our track, so that all who accompanied us can recall many of the tragic scenes in which they took a part, and which have been so graphically described in history. Many of us, perhaps, in our army life, were called to other fields of action under Sherman, Thomas and others, and were never called upon to face the heroic Army of Northern Virginia in the defence of Richmond. To all such a brief allusion to historical facts connected with many points along which we passed will be highly appreciated. It is the purpose of the publisher of this book to give a plain, simple statement of facts, so that when you take up this volume you can read it with implicit faith. Historical facts given will not be wholly of my own imagination or conception, but will be quoted from the best authorities.
