Book Richmond on the Thames Classic Reprint

Download or read book Richmond on the Thames Classic Reprint written by Richard Garnett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richmond on the Thames Not wholly in the busy world, nor quite Beyond it, blooms the garden that I love. These lines of the poet express the sentiment which has always guided monarchs, statesmen, and others engaged in the practical business of the world, in the selection of retreats from the cares of government and business. Hence some of the most delightful spots on earth are found in the Vicinity of great cities, where taste has taken advantage of natural beauty, and converted fields and woods into parks and gardens. It may be, however, that the world has now seen almost the last of such firm in uree. Two causes militate strongly against their perpetuation - the vast increase in the dimensions of modern cities, so infinitely beyond anything that could have been anticipated in past ages, and the still less expected acceleration of the means of transit, which now enables recreation to be sought at considerable distances without relaxing the sovereign's or the statesman's hold upon public affairs. Henry VII., the second founder of Richmond and the bestower of its present appellation, had a palace at Greenwich also. No place could have seemed more appropriate for the residence of the sovereign of a great marine state, on the way to be the first sea - power in the world; and there, in fact, Queen Elizabeth by preference received foreign ambassadors. By the time of Charles II., however, residence there had become impossible even to a less pleasure - loving sovereign, and only the happy thought of Nell Gwynne (if it was hers) has preserved Greenwich as an object of national pride and interest. Richmond has suffered less. It will appear from the following pages how the creation of the park, and of the gardens of the adjacent Kew, while in a measure encouraging residence, have protected it from being utterly swamped by suburban extension and merely utilitarian encroachments. Yet its royal days are over; its warmest admirers must acknowledge that the Sovereign is more fitly established at Windsor, and that, should any change occur, it will rather be in the direction of greater remoteness from, than closer proximity to the capital. Its destiny in the future is that of a retreat and playground for the people, especially for the metropolis, and great will be their shame and loss if they suffer it to be spoiled either by the sinister interests or the meddlesome interference which are always conspiring against the beautiful. Book The Thames Illustrated

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thames Illustrated: A Picturesque Journeying From Richmond to Oxford (Richmond to Hampton Court) And now the river, which has lost something on its charm after leaving Twickenham, gains new character, and umbrageous stretches of neighbouring country appear as we approach the wooded beauties of Bushey. The ancient town of Kingston lies in the heart of a most charming country, on the Surrey side, a mile and-a-half above Teddington. The place has long been of high importance, and has one of the oldest bridges on the Thames. It is a pleasant town, with broad market-place, in the midst of which stands the Town Hall, a good Italian structure, erected in 1840. Near by, upon an inscribed basement with carved surrounding pillars and ornamental railing, is the celebrated coronation stone, from which, as many have averred, the place took its name, and whereof the chroniclers record that it was the regal seat at the coronation of Athelstan, 924; Edmund, 940; Edred, 946; Edgar, 959; Edward the Martyr, 975. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London on Thames: In Bygone Days How one would like to recall, even dimly, some of the scenes which have been reflected in the bosom of the silver Thames, some of the many gorgeous pageants which have passed over its surface with youth at the prow and pleasure at the helm, sweeping past the old city to the measured stroke of oars. The silent highway has te - echoed with the joyous shouts and merriment of many a joust and water tournament. Royal barges have passed from pleasant Greenwich to the Tower, or from Westminster and Whitehall to Richmond, Hampton Court, and Windsor; and many a sad and silent barge has conveyed State prisoners from their trial to their last prison, and landed them at the low-browed portal and the dank, wet steps of St. Thomas' Tower or Traitors' Gate. For the river has had its dark shadows as well as its brilliant lights, and many a State secret has been securely locked in its silent bosom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tale of the Thames It was the pursuit of this natural but neglected pastime that had brought the two, after an excellent early breakfast at the King's Head, Cirencester, vigorously tramping along the Tetbury Road as far as Thames Head Bridge. From the bridge they descended to the towing path of the nearly dry canal, thence they wandered down the bank into the pleasant meadow, hoping to discover the Source of the Thames. Our two friends had a vague notion Of making a tour of the Thames, partly on foot and partly by boat or canoe, but as yet they had no very definite view on the subject. Book Life in the Writings of Storm Jameson

Download or read book Life in the Writings of Storm Jameson written by Elizabeth Maslen and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Storm Jameson (1891–1986) is primarily known as a compelling essayist; her stature as a novelist and champion of the dispossessed is largely forgotten. In Life in the Writings of Storm Jameson, Elizabeth Maslen reveals a figure who held her own beside fellow British women writers, including Virginia Woolf; anticipated the Angry Young Women, such as Doris Lessing; and was an early champion of such European writers as Arthur Koestler and Czesław Miłosz. Jameson was a complex character whose politics were grounded in social justice; she was passionately antifascist—her novel In the Second Year (1936) raised the alarm about Nazism—but always wary of communism. An eloquent polemicist, Jameson was, as president of the British P.E.N. during the 1930s and 1940s, of invaluable assistance to refugee writers. Elizabeth Maslen’s biography introduces a true twentieth century hedgehog, whose essays and subtly experimental fiction were admired in Europe and the States.
