Book Richmond During the War Four Years of Personal Observation Annotated

Download or read book Richmond During the War Four Years of Personal Observation Annotated written by Sallie Brock and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sallie Ann Brock (Putman) writes from her first hand familiarities with life in Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy - from the initial days of "secession fever," to the glorious early months of victories - on through the terrible privations of the war years, the bread riots, and countless other adversities. She concludes with sketches of the death throes of the Confederate States of America, as experienced in Richmond, Virginia. However, Richmond is not the only scene with which Miss Brock is familiar. This educated and well-read woman kept up with other theaters of the war as well and gives accounts of the battles of Gettysburg, Antietam, Vicksburg, and other important battles with the alacrity of a seasoned newspaper reporter. Extensive supplementary work has been done on this out-of- print book (without taking any part from the original) such as added photographs and illustrations, translations of foreign words and phrases, explanations of archaic words and terms, and clarifying notes to make for a more enjoyable experience for the contemporary reader. The editor is a former teacher of American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boys of 61: Or Four Years of Fighting; Personal Observation With the Army and Navy, From the First Battle of Bull Run to the Fall of Richmond This volume, though historic, is not a history of the Rebellion, but a record of personal observations and experiences during the war, with an occasional look at affairs in general to give clearness to the narrative. The time has not arrived for the writing of an impartial history of the conflict between Slavery and Freedom in the United States. Reports of military operations are incomplete; documents in the archives at Washington are inaccessible; much material remains to be gathered before the patient historian can sift the wheat from the chaff. More than this, the war of ideas is not yet ended. Defeated Rebels in some parts of the South are bent on exterminating the African race. Few of those lately in rebellion plead guilty of having committed a crime; taking up arms against the government they consider to have been a blunder only. We are, therefore, too near the great events to render proper judgment upon questions in which our principles and sympathies have been enlisted. The chapter concerning the Confederate Cotton Loan may seem to be out of place in a volume of which so large a portion is given to narrative, but I trust that it will be acceptable to the general reader, inasmuch as it reveals the efforts of the Rebels to array all Europe against the United States in the late struggle. The correspondence in my possession was picked up in the streets of Richmond, and will be of value to the future historian. The chapter in question is but an outline of the operations of the Confederates abroad. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although nine of the former British colonies joined the United States before Virginia, the fate of the new republic depended heavily on the Commonwealth. With four of the first five American presidents, and many other founding fathers and framers of the Constitution, calling Virginia their home, the roots of American democracy are firmly planted within the borders of the Old Dominion. Similarly, several Southern states preceded Virginia in seceding from the Union, but until Virginia joined them in April 1861, the Confederacy lacked cohesion. Richmond was immediately named the capital of the fledgling nation, and by the end of spring, Virginia had become the primary political and military theater in which the grand tragedy of the Civil War was enacted. Virginia at War, 1861, edited by acclaimed historians William C. Davis and James I. Robertson Jr., vividly portrays the process of secession, the early phases of conflict, and the struggles of Virginians to weather the brutal storms of war. Virginia at War, 1861 is the first in a series of volumes on each of Virginia's five years as a Confederate state. Essays by eight noted Civil War scholars provide a three-dimensional view of Virginians' experiences during the first year of the War Between the States. In addition to recounting the remarkable military events taking place in Virginia in 1861, this collection examines a civilian population braced for war but divided on crucial questions, an economy pressed to cope with the demands of combat, and a culture that strained to reconcile its proud heritage with its uncertain future. In 1861, the outcome of the Civil War was far from determined, but for Virginians there was little doubt that the war experience would alter nearly everything they had known before the outbreak of hostilities. In exacting detail, Virginia at War, 1861 examines the earliest challenges of the Civil War, the changes war wrought, and the ways in which Virginians withstood and adapted to this profound, irrevocable upheaval.

Book Breaking the Confederacy

Download or read book Breaking the Confederacy written by Jack H. Lepa and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-03-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Civil War moved into 1864, people in the North expected newly appointed general-in-chief Ulysses S. Grant to roll over the Confederate armies and bring victory and peace by the end of the summer. With his friend William Tecumseh Sherman, Grant devised a strategy to defeat the Confederate Army of Tennessee and lay waste to the Deep South so that the area could no longer provide support for the Confederate war effort. Making extensive use of materials both contemporary and modern, including letters, diaries, memoirs and histories, the author presents a detailed narrative of the locales, conditions, personnel, strategies, tactics, battles and skirmishes as Sherman's forces fought their way from Chattanooga to Atlanta and then made their famous march to the sea, destroying all resources along the way. He also details Confederate general John Bell Hood's ill-fated attempt to capture Nashville while Sherman was occupied elsewhere. The fighting and devastation in Georgia and Tennessee that summer of 1864 were indeed major factors in the final Union victory.
