This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richelieu and the Growth of French Power The literature in reference to Richelieu is also very voluminous. The great work Of M. Hanotaux, when complete, will contain the most valuable ac count oi Richelieu's life that has appeared. With such diligence and ability has M. Hanotaux studied his subject that his work will remain, I think, the permanent record of the career of the great Cardinal. This Life of Richelieu, when finished, will comprise four large volumes, and its size will perhaps deter the ordinary reader, but it is none too full for any one who wishes to familiarise himself with French history during the important period covered by Richelieu's administration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chief Minister to King Louis XIII, Cardinal Richelieu was the architect of a new France in the seventeenth century and the force behind the nation's rise as a European power. One of the first statesmen to clearly understand the necessity of a balance of powers, he has captured the imagination of generations, both through the story of his life and through Alexandre Dumas's portrayal of him as a ruthless political mastermind in the classic The Three Musketeers. Jean-Vincent Blanchard's rich and insightful new biography brings Richelieu fully to life in all his complexity. His careful understanding of politics as spectacle speaks to contemporary readers; much of what he accomplished was promoted strategically through his great passion for theater and literature. ƒminence offers a rich portrait of a fascinating man and his era, and gives us a keener understanding of the dark art of politics. "Blanchard's captivating biography vividly captures the rise to power of a seminal figure who was instrumental in creating France as we know it."-Publishers Weekly (starred review) "Lovers of intrigue and derring-do will enjoy Jean-Vincent Blanchard's Eminence ... [His] lively style will appeal to general readers, while history buffs will appreciate his careful footnotes and plethora of primary sources."-The Baltimore Sun

Book The Growth and Decline of the French Monarchy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Growth and Decline of the French Monarchy Classic Reprint written by James Mackinnon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth and Decline of the French Monarchy This volume has grown out of a desire to investigate the origins of the French Revolution. Many books have been written on that Revolution, and a goodly number deal directly or indirectly with its origins. Writers like M. Taine have generalised its causes with philosophical grasp and acute ness. They have unfolded the more direct of these causes by a study of the Old rc'glfnc in its later phases. M. Taine, in particular, has given us a graphic picture of the social and political institutions of France in the eighteenth century in his Origines de la France Contemporaine. The roots of the Revolution lie, however, deeper down in the layers of French history; below as well as in the upper stratum Of the eighteenth century. For its causes were indirect as well as direct, remote as well as immediate. To unfold this twofold category of causes, it is needful to go far back into the history of the old French monarchy, to review, in fact, the history of monarchic France from the Middle Ages onward. It is this that I have attempted to do in the following chapters, and in this endeavour I have eschewed the method of philosophical generalisation for that of consecutive historical investigation. I have adopted the historic method in a large sense in my search for an adequate explanation of the great upheaval which, in the last decade Of the eighteenth century, affected the history not only of France, but Of Europe, permanently as well as transiently. Several questions suggested themselves to my mind on looking at the history of France from this point of view. How did the power of the French kings, from Hugh Capet onwards, grow? How did these kings exercise this power in the work Of government? How, as the result of the exercise of this power, did the monarchy decline, and thus invite its own fall by the violent process of revolution? In seeking the answers to these questions, I became engrossed in my subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
