This book was released on 2019-06-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating look at the private lives of prosperous landowners in antebellum South Carolina Offering a richly textured picture of early national South Carolina, Richardson-Sinkler Connections includes more than 150 letters and documents left by the prominent Richardson and Sinkler families, who lived in the Santee region between Charleston and Columbia. Prosperous landowners related by both blood and marriage, the families made their fortunes as planters of indigo, rice, and cotton. The Sinkler family established homes south of the Santee River starting around 1700, and Richard Richardson arrived from Virginia about 1730. The second James Sinkler died in 1800, leaving four children, only one of whom had completed his education. Thirteen years old when his father died, the second son, William Sinkler, was mentored by his older first cousin/brother-in-law, state representative and later governor James B. Richardson, who closely followed the boy's progress as he pursued his studies in the North. William would go on to build Eutaw plantation in what is now Orangeburg County and, like his cousin James, pursue a passionate interest in horse breeding and racing, even building a racetrack on his property. In addition to revealing details about matters of politics, farming, education, travel, and racing, the letters also describe the difficulties of visiting across the Santee River, in the Sandhills where the Richardsons lived. The linchpin of the two families was James Sinkler's widow, Margaret, who was adored by her niece/stepdaughter, Ann, as well as by the Richardson nephews and many others. Her letters, and Ann's, open a fascinating window into women's lives of the era. Thorough annotations with genealogical notes and charts trace the complicated relationships between the Sinklers and Richardsons, as well as among other prominent families of the region and state. The book includes more than forty illustrations, including portraits, sketches, photographs of plantations and other sites, plats, and maps.

Book The Planters

Download or read book The Planters written by J. Derald Morgan and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-19 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a genealogical history of the McKneely families of South Carolina, Georgia and Louisiana. There are two branches to this Scotch-Irish family with this unique spelling. One that migrated from South Carolina to Georgia and then on to Texas and other parts of the expanding United States of America. Then there is the branch that left South Carolina in the late 1700s and early 1800s with other families and settled in what at the time was West Florida. This area then was taken into the United States of America with the purchase of Florida from Spain and then became a part of Louisiana. The Louisiana branch resided in the Parishes called the Florida Parishes and stayed close to the area until after the First World War when the family began to migrate into other parts of the United States. You will find in this book two parts. One part covers the McKneely family that migrated to the Florida Parishes of Louisiana and the Second part that covers the McKneely family that first migrated to Georgia and then to Oklahoma and Texas. There is speculation but no proof that the two lines come from the common immigrant ancestor James McNealy with various spellings of McNealy. Look at the information and decide for yourself whether or not two lines could adopt a common spelling change, come from South Carolina and have common names and not be related to the common ancestor attached to the Louisiana McKneely clan. I have attempted to include as much detail as possible about each person. Personal stories are the spice of a genealogical work. I have included as many as possible and included them without edit. I am not a politically correct family historian. There may be some factually correct material that you may not like or that someone might tell you is not correct. Please read this account with the times and culture in mind as that is what makes the story a good one. Do not try to impress yourself on the story but put yourself into the times and places.

Book The Richardson Light Guard of Wakefield Massachusetts

Download or read book The Richardson Light Guard of Wakefield Massachusetts written by Barry M. Stentiford and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of the Richardson Light Guard of Wakefield, Massachusetts, from its origins in 1851 until its end in 1975. What had been an institution of community members and local elites passed to town, then state, and finally federal government. During the same period, Wakefield evolved from an agrarian town to a manufacturing town and finally to a bedroom suburb, ending the practice of a handful of local elites ruling the town unchallenged. Though the rise of the National Guard was generally positive, for some militia companies, inclusion in the National Guard weakened vital bonds with their communities. In the 19th century, the Richardson Light Guard thrived under generous patrons, a supportive town, and a relatively wealthy state government. After becoming part of the National Guard in 1916, the links with its home community steadily weakened, finally breaking during World War II. After the war, the National Guard company had few links to Wakefield and was reorganized out of existence in 1975.

As the final resting places of those whose earthly journey has ended, they are also repositories of valuable cultural history. The pioneer cemeteries—those from the 19th century—provide a wealth of information on the people who settled Texas during its years as a Republic (1836-1845), and after it became the 28th state in 1845. In What Lies Beneath: Texas Pioneer Cemeteries and Graveyards, author Cynthia Leal Massey exhumes the stories of these pioneers, revealing the intriguing truth behind the earliest graveyards in the Lone Star State, including some of its most ancient. This guide also provides descriptions of headstone features and symbols, and demystifies the burial traditions of early Texas pioneers and settlers.
