Book excerpt: The ubiquity and importance of mathematics in our complex society is generally not in doubt. However, even a scientifically interested layman would be hard pressed to point out aspects of our society where contemporary mathematical research is essential. Most popular examples are finance, engineering, wheather and industry, but the way mathematics comes into play is widely unknown in the public. And who thinks of application fields like biology, encryption, architecture, or voting systems? This volume comprises a number of success stories of mathematics in our society - important areas being shaped by cutting edge mathematical research. The authors are eminent mathematicians with a high sense for public presentation, addressing scientifically interested laymen as well as professionals in mathematics and its application disciplines.

  • Pages : 157 pages

Download or read book The In Between written by Jeff Goins and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We’re an “instant gratification” generation—but most change happens gradually. Many of us spend our lives searching and longing for something more than what is in front of us. Whether it’s traveling abroad or chasing cheap (or expensive) thrills, we’re all looking for the medicine to satisfy our restlessness. And so often we're looking in the wrong place. The In-Between is a call to accept the importance that waiting plays in our lives. Can we embrace the extraordinary nature of the ordinary and enjoy the daily mundane—what lies in between the “major” moments? Learning to live in this tension, to be content in these moments of waiting, may be our greatest struggle—and our greatest opportunity to grow.

Download or read book Soul Recreation written by Tom Schwanda and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-04-11 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritually there is a great hunger today for contemplative and more satisfying experiences with God. Puritanism might seem to be an unlikely source for this, yet few groups in the history of Christian spirituality have written more extensively or wisely on the subject. Isaac Ambrose (1604-64), a relatively forgotten English Puritan, developed a theological foundation for the spiritual life based upon the Christian's intimate union with Christ, which the Puritans often called "spiritual marriage." Schwanda demonstrates that this vibrant relationship of union and communion with Jesus, inspired by the Holy Spirit, was manifested in a deep contemplative piety of gazing lovingly and gratefully upon God. At the same time, Ambrose did not neglect loving his neighbors. This study reveals how heavenly meditation was one of the significant practices engaged by Ambrose to cultivate spiritual intimacy and enjoyment of God. Further, his experiential reading of Scripture, in particular the Song of Songs, provided him with a language of ravishment and delight in God. This book provides a distinctively Protestant foundation for recovering the contemplative life while recognizing the significant contributions of the Western Catholic tradition.

Book The Restricted Burnside Problem

Download or read book The Restricted Burnside Problem written by Michael Vaughan-Lee and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1993 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book provided an account of the restricted Burnside problem making extensive use of Lie ring techniques to provide a uniform treatment of the field. It also included Kostrikin's theorem for groups of prime exponent. The second edition, as well as providing general updating, contains a new chapter on E.I. Zelmanov's highly acclaimed and recent solution to the Restricted Burnside Problem for arbitrary prime-power exponent. This material is currently only available in papers in Russian journals. This proof ofZelmanov's theorem given in the new edition is self contained, and (unlike Zelmanov's original proof) does not rely on the theory of Jordan algebras.

This book was released on 2007-11-07 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D-modules continues to be an active area of stimulating research in such mathematical areas as algebraic, analysis, differential equations, and representation theory. Key to D-modules, Perverse Sheaves, and Representation Theory is the authors' essential algebraic-analytic approach to the theory, which connects D-modules to representation theory and other areas of mathematics. To further aid the reader, and to make the work as self-contained as possible, appendices are provided as background for the theory of derived categories and algebraic varieties. The book is intended to serve graduate students in a classroom setting and as self-study for researchers in algebraic geometry, representation theory.

Book Analytic Computational Complexity

Download or read book Analytic Computational Complexity written by J.F. Traub and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytic Computational Complexity contains the proceedings of the Symposium on Analytic Computational Complexity held by the Computer Science Department, Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 7-8, 1975. The symposium provided a forum for assessing progress made in analytic computational complexity and covered topics ranging from strict lower and upper bounds on iterative computational complexity to numerical stability of iterations for solution of nonlinear equations and large linear systems. Comprised of 14 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to analytic computational complexity before turning to proof techniques used in analytic complexity. Subsequent chapters focus on the complexity of obtaining starting points for solving operator equations by Newton's method; maximal order of multipoint iterations using n evaluations; the use of integrals in the solution of nonlinear equations in N dimensions; and the complexity of differential equations. Algebraic constructions in an analytic setting are also discussed, along with the computational complexity of approximation operators. This monograph will be of interest to students and practitioners in the fields of applied mathematics and computer science.

Book The Case for Impeachment

Download or read book The Case for Impeachment written by Allan J. Lichtman and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER “Lichtman has written what may be the most important book of the year.” —The Hill What are the ranges and limitations of presidential authority? What are the standards of truthfulness that a president must uphold? What will it take to impeach Donald J. Trump? Professor Allan J. Lichtman, who has correctly forecasted thirty years of presidential outcomes, answers these questions, and more, in TheCase for Impeachment—a deeply convincing argument for impeaching the 45th president of the United States. In the fall of 2016, Allan J. Lichtman made headlines when he predicted that Donald J. Trump would defeat the heavily favored Democrat, Hillary Clinton, to win the presidential election. Now, in clear, nonpartisan terms, Lichtman lays out the reasons Congress could remove Trump from the Oval Office: his ties to Russia before and after the election, the complicated financial conflicts of interest at home and abroad, and his abuse of executive authority. The Case for Impeachment also offers a fascinating look at presidential impeachments throughout American history, including the often-overlooked story of Andrew Johnson’s impeachment, details about Richard Nixon’s resignation, and Bill Clinton’s hearings. Lichtman shows how Trump exhibits many of the flaws (and more) that have doomed past presidents. As the Nixon Administration dismissed the reporting of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein as “character assassination” and “a vicious abuse of the journalistic process,” Trump has attacked the “dishonest media,” claiming, “the press should be ashamed of themselves.” Historians, legal scholars, and politicians alike agree: we are in politically uncharted waters—the durability of our institutions is being undermined and the public’s confidence in them is eroding, threatening American democracy itself. Most citizens—politics aside—want to know where the country is headed. Lichtman argues, with clarity and power, that for Donald Trump’s presidency, smoke has become fire.
