Fu apprezzata nella Milano illuminista, fu vista come il prodotto dell'attività innovatrice in Francia e messa subito in pratica dalla zarina Caterina II di Russia. L'opera fu scritta in francese, poiché in questo periodo era forte l'egemonia della Francia e le persone di cultura parlavano e scrivevano in francese con naturalezza, anche se di diversa nazionalità.
