Download or read book Motor Activity and Movement Disorders written by Paul Sanberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-11-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Motor Activity and Movement Disorders thirteen state-of-the-art articles explicate forefront research methodologies for measuring and interpreting motor activity in animals, as well as their applications to preclinical and clinical research involving motor disorders. The contributors emphasize motor asymmetries, turning behavior, and dyskinetic movements. They also present a variety of quantitative approaches designed to assess specific aspects of motor activity and illustrate numerous computerized measuring techniques that permit detailed and objective approaches to quantifying motor behavior. Motor Activity and Movement Disorders will contribute to a greater understanding of brain-behavior relationships through its focus on methodology and its application to current animal models and to human disorders.

Download or read book Clinical Physiology of Sleep written by Ralph Lydic and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clinical Physiology Series strives to provide timely summaries of basic physiological research as it bears on clinically relevant topics. Considerable data obtained across different levels of behavioral arousal and sleep illustrate the undeniable clinical importance of efforts to understand the cellular mechanisms that cause state-dependent changes in physiology. First, it is an established fact that neuronal mechanisms regulating sleep and wakefulness significantly alter cardiovascular, respiratory, thermoregulatory control. Second, temporal studies have established correlations between time of day, time of certain pathophysiological events, and time of death. Third, occupational health and safety are known to be adversely affected by decreased levels of arousal that occur at predictable times of day. The alternation of waking and sleeping, the daily course of the advancing and receding tides of consciousness, has long been a familiar part of our experience. But it is a new idea that autonomic and respiratory physiology are equally and dramatically altered in a parallel fashion. It is this concept that is summarized, explored, and developed in this much needed book. Clinical Physiology of Sleep is the first book to systematically discuss the role of the autonomic and respiratory systems in the sleep process while blending phenomenological description with cellular mechanisms and clinical correlations. The central concept is the relationship of general physiological alterations during sleep to cellular physiology and to the pathology of sleep. The editors have drawn together thematically related chapters written by experts in this rapidly growing field. The book is sure to find an important place in the library of sleep researchers, respiratory and cardiovascular physiologists, neuroscientists, anesthesiologists, and clinicians concerned with sleep disorders.

Download or read book Lemur Biology written by Ian Tattersall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume of studies on prosimian primates has, until recently, tended to lag well behind that of studies on the higher primates. This is so despite the fact that the considerable intrinsic interest of the living prosimians and the signifi cance of their stuQ,y for our understanding of the earlier stages of primate evolution have long been acknowledged by zoologists, paleontologists, and anthropologists alike. Among the prosimians, the Malagasy lemurs are of profound interest not only because they include the only extant diurnal forms, but also because it is only on Madagascar that the absence of competition with higher primates has allowed a surviving prosimian fauna to radiate, es sentially unrestricted, into a broad spectrum of ecological zones. In contrast, the few extant prosimians of Africa and Asia occupy a relatively narrow range of "refuge" niches; although of considerable interest in themselves, they do not show the richness and variety of adaptation which make the Malagasy prosimian fauna such a fascinating object of study. Over the past few years, however, there has been a considerable resur gence of interest in the prosimians in general, and in the lemurs in particular. The range of studies resulting from this rekindling of interest is wide, compre hending the systematics, evolution, anatomy, behavior, and ecology of these forms. This volume constitutes a progress report on our knowledge of the le murs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is as a detailed, but highly readable and balanced account of the history of animal space flights carried out by all nations, but principally the United States and the Soviet Union. It explores the ways in which animal high-altitude and space flight research impacted on space flight biomedicine and technology, and how the results - both successful and disappointing - allowed human beings to then undertake that same hazardous journey with far greater understanding and confidence. This complete and authoritative book will undoubtedly become the ultimate authority on animal space flights.
Download or read book A Primer for the Exercise and Nutrition Sciences written by Christopher B. Scott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-09 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What a journey writing this text has been. The lengthy voyage started well before the idea hatched of authoring a text that contained the word “thermodynamics”! I was informed by my good friend and sometimes colleague Dr. Jose Antonio that by including that word in the title, nutritionists and exercise physiologists might avoid the subject. But almost every step of my expedition was taken on a rather solid foundation of thermodynamics and as such the topic could not possibly be omitted from the title or the text of a book about bioenergetics and energy expenditure. I am not a physicist. In fact I ?rst went to college to become a football coach. That vocational choice began to deteriorate when taking the mandatory anatomy and physiology courses required of all physical education majors. This information was exciting; my interest in physical education began to wane. During sophomore year, I answered an advertisement in the school newspaper requesting research subjects.
Download or read book Behavioural Adaptations of Desert Animals written by Giovanni Costa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a brief survey of biotopic and vegetational features and an account of the main groups of desert animals, the most unusual patterns of the behaviour of the xerophilous fauna are examined. The importance of the thermohygric regulation and self-protective and locomotor mechanisms to the survival of arid-adapted animals is emphasized and various adaptations in the alimentary, reproductive and social spheres are analyzed. The clear and fluent treatment will awaken the interest of the reading public, from the amateur naturalists to research scientists.
