Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the 18th century's most influential architectural designers and writers, Abraham Swan defined many conventions of English rococo detail. This reprint of an extremely rare and classic stylebook, compiled by the English architect nearly 250 years ago, provides outstanding examples of Palladian and Georgian architecture and design in colonial America and England. Included are floor plans, detailed elevations, and drawings for cornices, mouldings, and other decorative elements that demonstrate Swan's unique style. Designed, in his words, more for "Gentlemen of moderate Fortunes than of great Estates who may be inclined to build Houses," Swan's designs featured such aesthetic touches as double staircases, elegant entryways, and two or three floors with spacious galleries, salons, and dressing rooms. Invaluable to architectural historians and designers, this splendid stylebook will delight devotees of early English Georgian and American domestic architecture and interior design, cultural historians, artists, and craftworkers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rich in tradition and history, the art of batik has been a deeply integrated facet of Chinese folk art for over 2,000 years. Using molten beeswax, skilled artisans paint patterns onto white cloth, which is then dipped into indigo dye. When the wax is removed with boiling water, unique designs of great harmony and beauty remain. The themes depicted in batik decoration have a strong native flavor, and are distinctive of the Chinese provinces and districts where they were created. In Huangping, mountains, trees, and birds are represented. In the Miao district, the concentration is on flowers and butterflies, while in the Yunnan Province, designs of peacocks, monkeys, and elephants abound. In this stunning pictorial archive, more than 110 authentic designs have been carefully reproduced from a rare, early collection of batik art. Collected from the remote areas of China's southwestern provinces, each decorative pattern is rich in beauty and meaning. Download or read book Cubism Australian Art written by Lesley Harding and published by The Miegunyah Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cubism was a movement that changed fundamentally the course of twentieth-century art. It had far-reaching effects, both conceptual and stylistic, which are still being felt today. Described in 1912 by French poet and commentator Guillaume Apollinaire as 'not an art of imitation, but an art of conception', Cubism irreversibly altered art's relationship to visual reality. 'I paint things as I think them, not as I see them', Picasso said. Cubism and Australian Art examines for the first time the impact of this transformative art movement on the work of Australian artists, from the early 1920s to the present day. The authors argue that by its very nature, Cubism was characterised by variation and change, that the idea of a pure or original Cubism was short lived, and that its appearance in Australian art parallels its uptake and re-interpretation by artists internationally. In the words of French artist Andr Lhote, mentor to several Australians who studied at his Academy in Paris: 'There are a thousand defi nitions of Cubism, because there are a thousand painters practising it'. More than eighty international and Australian artists are showcased with over 300 works, featuring Sam Atyeo, Ralph Balson, Grace Crowley, Frank Hinder, Roger Kemp, Godfrey Miller, Stephen Bram and Daniel Crooks, as well as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Fernand L ger.

Download or read book Grace Crowley s Contribution to Australian Modernism and Geometric Abstraction written by Dianne Ottley and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02-19 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace Crowley has been recognized as a product of European modernism and was one of the leading innovators of geometric abstraction in Australia. Having studied in Paris in the 1920s with one of the leading art teachers, writers and theorists, André Lhote, she returned to Australia having mastered the complex mathematics and geometry of the golden section and dynamic symmetry, that had become a framework for modernism. Through her teaching of these compositional techniques at the most progressive modern art school in Sydney in the 1930s, she became a crucial influence on the group of artists now recognized as the historical forerunners to American colour-field painting introduced to Australia in the 1960s, and Australian abstraction. Through her close friendship with Anne Dangar, who played a critical role in the success of Albert Gleizes’ utopian art colony in rural France, Crowley maintained contact with mainstream European modernism and links to the Abstraction-Creation Group in Paris. During the 1940s and 1950s, Crowley worked with fellow-artist Ralph Balson, and together they developed their own style of geometric abstract art which reflected the spiritual dimensions of Kandinsky and Mondrian. Although undervalued in her own time, the sincerity and uncompromising quality of her work that transcends national boundaries, makes her one of the most important Australian women artists of her generation.
Download or read book Graham Sutherland written by Rosalind Thuillier and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling biographical study of a leading twentieth-century British artist, 'Graham Sutherland: Life, Work and Ideas' offers new insight into how he and his paintings developed. In the culmination of her life's work, Rosalind Thuillier builds on the reflections and recollections of a friendship spanning decades to craft a comprehensive study of Sutherland's life and works, interweaving his perceptive responses to his own art, taken from personal notes and correspondence, with critical reviews and collectors' musings to give an authentic picture of the man whose work divided critics. Drawing on Sutherland's personal archive, the book includes an expansive collection of images that provide a fresh view of the artist. Studies by Sutherland, along with preparatory works for what would become renowned paintings, are published for the first time. Graham Sutherland's distinctive style and the emotions that shaped the paintings are here vividly explored. Thuillier describes not only the inspiration he found in the windswept Pembrokeshire countryside, but also his time as an official war artist, and his friendships inside and outside the art world. She expertly details the process behind the creation of works such as the controversial portrait of Churchill (1954), subsequently destroyed, and his most famous work, the huge 'Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph' tapestry (1962) in Coventry Cathedral. 'Graham Sutherland: Life, Work and Ideas' is not merely a biography, but a journey behind the scenes of the artist'scareer, exploring the paintings, relationships and influences that formed his vision as an artist and his undeniable contribution to art.
