Book Poetic Rhythm

Download or read book Poetic Rhythm written by Reuven Tsur and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research is an instrumental investigation of a theory of rhythmical performance of poetry, originally propounded speculatively in author Reuven Tsur's A Perception-Oriented Theory of Metre (1977). "Iambic pentameter" means that there is a verse unit consisting of an unstressed and a stressed syllable (in this order), and that the verse line consists of five such units. In the first 165 verse lines of Paradise Lost, there are two such lines. The theory takes up one of the central issues in metrical studies: all criteria for metricality hitherto proposed have been violated by the greatest masters of musicality in English poetry. The question arises, how do we recognize two verse lines that are very different in their structures as instances of the same abstract pattern of, e.g., iambic pentameter, and how do we distinguish a metrical from an unmetrical line? One great difference between this theory of meter and others concerns the status of deviation. Most theoreticians deploy a battery of tools to make deviant stress patterns conform with metric pattern. Only when all attempts fail do they speak of "tension." When they succeed, they blur the distinction between, for example, Milton's and Pope's metrical styles. Or else, they have formulated different rules of metricality for Shakespeare and Milton. This theory assumes that when the versification patterns and linguistic patterns conflict, they can be accommodated in a pattern of "Rhythmical Performance" - namely, one in which the conflicting patterns are simultaneously perceptible. There are scales of mounting difficulties of mismatches, on which each poet (and each theorist) draws at different points the boundary of what is acceptable. Reuven Tsur's revised and expanded second edition (original publication, Peter Lang, 1986) is essential reading for all scholars and students involved in versification and Cognitive Poetics.

Book Welcome to the Wonderful World of Wicketkeepers

Download or read book Welcome to the Wonderful World of Wicketkeepers written by Luke Sutton and published by White Owl. This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The journalist Suresh Menon once said ‘You don't have to be mad to be a wicketkeeper, but it helps’. Wicketkeeping is one of the great arts of cricket on which seemingly everyone has an opinion and yet few really know what they are talking about; and the wicketkeepers themselves are an eclectic mix of extroverts and introverts all trying to do the same thing every time they walk onto a cricket field – be perfect. Welcome to the Wonderful World of Wicketkeepers is a book written by a wicketkeeper, Luke Sutton, which lifts the lid on what being a wicketkeeper is really like. This is not a dull technical examination of the art but instead a look into the minds of the best who have done it in England. There is humour, sadness and extraordinary insight as Sutton allows the likes of Jos Buttler, Jack Russell, Sarah Taylor, Alec Stewart, Chris Read, Amy Jones and Geraint Jones to tell their own stories about what it truly meant to be a ‘keeper’.

Book Rhythm Play and Interaction Design

Download or read book Rhythm Play and Interaction Design written by Brigid M. Costello and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are rhythms of action and response to all human-computer interactions. As we click, swipe, tap and sway to their beats, these rhythms intersect with the rhythms of our everyday lives. Perhaps they synchronize, perhaps they disrupt each other or maybe they dance together. Whatever their impact our experience of these rhythms will colour our experience of an interaction design. In playful interactive applications, rhythm is especially crucial because of the role it performs in building and maintaining the precarious spirit of play. Play involves movement and this movement has a rhythm that drives the experience. But what is the character of these rhythms of play and how can they be used in the design of interactive applications? These questions are the focus of this book. Drawing on traditions of rhythmic design practice in dance, performance, music and architecture, this book reveals key insights into practical strategies for designing playful rhythmic experience. With playful experiences now being incorporated into almost every type of computer application, interaction design practitioners and researchers need to develop a deeper understanding of the specific character of rhythms within play. Written from a designer's perspective, with interviews from leading creative artists and interaction design practitioners, Rhythm, Play and Interaction Design will help practitioners, researchers and students understand, evaluate and create rhythmic experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Green fluorescent proteins have been floating in the ocean for more than 160 million years, but it took a curious scientist, fascinated by pinpricks of green light, to begin unlocking their potential. Now these jellyfish proteins have become one of the most important tools available to researchers in modern medicine and biology. By using them to illuminate other proteins that were previously invisible even under a microscope, scientists are now able to observe facets of disease that would have otherwise gone undetected. Green fluorescent proteins are used in over three million experiments a year and have proved invaluable for tasks such as tracking HIV, breeding bird flu-resistant chickens, and confirming the existence of cancerous stem cells. In Illuminating Disease, Marc Zimmer introduces us to these revolutionary proteins, acquainting readers both with the researchers responsible for the proteins' discovery as well as their wide utility. The book details the history of genetically modified fluorescent parasites and viruses, which provide scientists with lifesaving information about the spread of diseases. Green fluorescent proteins allow scientists and doctors to understand diseases better by quite literally illuminating various microscopic interactions occurring in living cells that otherwise would have gone unseen. The book is richly illustrated, showing the visually striking uses of green fluorescent proteins, and many of these scans have won awards in biological imaging competitions. An ideal introduction for students and advanced researchers alike, Illuminating Disease is an accessible yet deeply probing investigation into one of the most important developments in medical research of the last several decades.

Book Rhythmical Subjects

Download or read book Rhythmical Subjects written by Marcus and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-23 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing a developing fascination with rhythm's significance, its patterns, and its measures, across philosophy, psychology, science, and the whole range of arts, Rhythmical Subjects shows how and why attention to rhythm came to serve as connective tissue between fields of inquiry at a time when modern disciplines were still in the process of formation or consolidation. The concentration on 'rhythm' and its cognates largely arose, Laura Marcus demonstrates, from the desire to reclaim or retain human and natural measures in the face of the coming of the machine and the speed of technological innovation. Rhythmical Subjects uncovers the disparate routes by which rhythm acquired its newfound ability to link ancient and modern forms of intellectual inquiry, and to fathom and re-invigorate temporal articulations of modern subjective life. Among the numerous intellectual and artistic developments set in a new light by this brilliantly wide-ranging book are: the long line of philosophical and theoretical writing on rhythm, from Nietzsche to Bergson and their twentieth-century interlocutors; psychological explorations of rhythm as the fundamental law of life, from Herbert Spencer and Ralph Waldo Emerson to Elsie Fogarty; more experimental engagements with psychology's rhythms, from Wilhelm Wundt, Théodule Ribot, and Karl Groos to the aesthetic writings of Vernon Lee; the history of prosody; pioneering applications of rhythm studies to social and sexual reform, by Havelock Ellis, Marie Stopes, D. H. Lawrence, and Mary Austin (among others); Lebensreform movements and the contribution of Rudolf Steiner and Emile Jaques-Dalcroze; and numerous endeavours in artistic and critical innovation, from the small modernist magazines of Bloomsbury and Paris to art salons and dance studios across Britain, Continental Europe, and America.

Book excerpt: It is meant literally! Join the group of five who get lost in a Warawiri, back-and-forth time travel journey into the Middle Age kingdom of Demak Jepara, in the island of Java in the sixteenth-century CE, and explore the amazing experiences of five hundred years ago in a mystical tropical kingdom. An East Timorese businessman, a Japanese stockbroker, a German music anthropologist, and a young Javanese executive lady are in the possession of heirlooms of the Middle Age Javanese kingdom, and they are transported by the mystical powers five centuries back because the heirlooms need to be spiritually cleansed. The president of the United States was also among the victims of the time travel into the past. And if you do not possess any ancient heirlooms, then just join the ninety-thousand spectator crowds on the soccer championship in the Jakarta Senayan gigantic stadium, who are also transported like a giant flying saucer five centuries into the past. The only way to rescue the victims back into the present is by holding a mystical ceremony from eight skyscrapers rooftops surrounding the stadium by eight spiritual masters forming the Mandala star configurations, playing the sacred Javanese gending symphony, the Harmony of Spirit in the Sky, led by their leader from the location of the lost stadium, using a slate board as his iPad. The events are all covered by Matra TV, a private TV broadcast company. A colorful laser light show in the sky from the skyscrapers rooftops, a rumor of an affair involving the president of the United States and the Javanese executive, and an exotic, mystical witchcraft ceremony and village life in remote jungle of Borneo add to your colorful journey into the past.

The wisdom of the centuries is often obvious when spoken, raises eyebrows at the thoughts revealed, silences while matters are considered as to the best way forward. The wisdom of the centuries is a gift from God, is an enlightening of speech, is the summation of the best, is the containment of the worst, is the victory of expression.
