Book excerpt: The exploitation of Latino workers in many industries, from agriculture and meat packing to textile manufacturing and janitorial services, is well known. By contrast, pineros -- itinerant workers who form the backbone of the forest management labour force on federal land -- toil largely in obscurity. Drawing on government papers, media accounts, and interviews with federal employees and Latino forest workers in Oregon’s Rogue Valley, Brinda Sarathy investigates how the federal government came to be one of the single largest employers of Latino labour in the Pacific Northwest. She documents pinero wages, working conditions, and benefits in comparison to those of white loggers and tree planters, exposing exploitation that, she argues, is the product of an ongoing history of institutionalized racism, fragmented policy, and intra-ethnic exploitation in the West. To overcome this legacy, Sarathy offers a number of proposals to improve the visibility and working conditions of pineros and to provide them with a stronger voice in immigration and forestry policy-making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a fresh perspective on an array of topics, this collection of poetry by Gerry Furney reflects the eclectic experiences of his life well lived-from his early years in Cork, Ireland, to his work in an isolated logging camp, to his tenure as mayor. Employing the rhyming technique, Popcorn for Breakfast speaks of everyday topics such as sports, pets, nature, and love, and not-so-everyday happenings such as logging and mining. It also includes odes and tributes to family and friends. Many of Furney's ponderings provide fodder for this varied volume. In the selection "I Wonder," Furney ruminates about the awe of nature. / Let's face it, we are in the dark / About who taught a dog to bark. / And have you heard a cat meow, / Or listened to a mooing cow. / And how about a horse's neigh / Or growling grizzly bears at play. / And then there is the eagle's screech / Or squawking herons on the beach. / There's many more surprising things, / How does an egg develop wings? Painting verbal pictures, the works in this collection speak of simple, yet important topics that display Furney's love of poetry.

Book Here on the Coast

Download or read book Here on the Coast written by Howard White and published by Harbour Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No matter where people live on the BC coast, says Howard White, they have certain shared experiences: frustration with rain and ferries, familiarity with gumboots, bumbershoots, seagull droppings and barnacles in the wrong places. But each little community clings to its own sense of uniqueness and considers itself the true West Coast. As a case in point, White offers fifty funny sketches of life as he has come to know it in sixty-odd years of living along that hundred-mile stretch of monsoon-prone shoreline ironically known as the Sunshine Coast. Included is what must be one of the most admiring testaments ever written about the virtues of the old-time outhouse; fond remembrances of saltwater fishing when a bad day meant you didn’t hook something in twenty minutes; and explorers who stooped to naming islands after favourite racehorses. We also meet a “bouquet of characters,” including a lyrical logger known as Pete the Poet; a diabolical seagoing remittance man; the saintly Quaker philosopher Hubert Evans and White’s barrier-busting Aunt Jean who taught him the advantages of “scientifically enlarging the truth.” Along with accounts of waste disposal wars and wry observations on modern technology, Here On the Coast offers a West Coast counterpart to such favourites as Letters From Wingfield Farm and Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town.

Book A Bibliography of Canadian Folklore in English

Download or read book A Bibliography of Canadian Folklore in English written by Edith Fowke and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1982-12-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the only comprehensive bibliography of Canadian folklore in English. The 3877 different items are arranged by genres: folktales; folk music and dance; folk speech and naming; superstitions, popular beliefs, folk medicine, and the supernatural; folk life and customs; folk art and material culture; and within genres by ethnic groups: Anglophone and Celtic, Francophone, Indian and Inuit, and other cultural groups. The items include reference books, periodicals, articles, records, films, biographies of scholars and informants, and graduate theses. Each items is annotated through a coding that indicates whether it is academic or popular, its importance to the scholar, and whether it is suitable for young people. The introduction includes a brief survey of Canadian folklore studies, putting this work into academic and social perspective. The book covers all the important items and most minor items dealing with Canadian folklore published in English up to the end of 1979. It is concerned with legitimate Canadian folklore – whether transplanted from other countries and preserved here, or created here to reflect the culture of this country. It distinguishes between authentic folklore presented as collected and popular treatments in which the material has been rewritten by the authors. Intended primarily for scholars of folklore, international as well as Canadian, the book will also be of use to scholars in anthropology, cultural geography, oral history, and other branches of Canadian culture studies, as well as to librarians, teachers, and the general public.

Book American Language Supplement 2

Download or read book American Language Supplement 2 written by H.L. Mencken and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2012-04-04 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The DEFINITIVE EDITION OF The American Language was published in 1936. Since then it has been recognized as a classic. It is that rarest of literary accomplishments—a book that is authoritative and scientific and is at the same time very diverting reading. But after 1936 HLM continued to gather new materials diligently. In 1945 those which related to the first six chapters of The American Language were published as Supplement I; the present volume contains those new materials which relate to the other chapters. The ground thus covered in Supplement II is as follows: 1. American Pronunciation. Its history. Its divergence from English usage. The regional and racial dialects. 2. American Spelling. The influence of Noah Webster upon it. Its characters today. The simplified spelling movement. The treatment of loan words. Punctuation, capitalization, and abbreviation. 3. The Common Speech. Outlines of its grammar. Its verbs, pronouns, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. The double negative. Other peculiarities. 4. Proper Names in America. Surnames. Given-names. Place-names. Other names. 5. American Slang. Its origin and history. The argot of various racial and occupational groups. Although the text of Supplement II is related to that of The American Language, it is an independent work that may be read profitably by persons who do not know either The American Language or Supplement I.
