Book Between Rhyme and Reason

Download or read book Between Rhyme and Reason written by Stanislav Shvabrin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of such global bestsellers as Lolita and Pale Fire, Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) is also one of the most controversial literary translators and translation theorists of modern time. In Between Rhyme and Reason, Stanislav Shvabrin discloses the complexity, nuance, and contradictions behind Nabokov's theory and practice of literalism to reveal how and why translation came to matter to Nabokov so much. Drawing on familiar as well as unknown materials, Shvabrin traces the surprising and largely unknown trajectory of Nabokov's lifelong fascination with translation to demonstrate that, for Nabokov, translation was a form of intellectual communion with his peers across no fewer than six languages. Empowered by Mikhail Bakhtin's insights into the interactive roots of literary creativity, Shvabrin's interpretative chronicle of Nabokov's involvement with translation shows how his dialogic encounters with others in the medium of translation left verbal vestiges on his own creations. Refusing to regard translation as a form of individual expression, Nabokov translated to communicate with his interlocutors, whose words and images continue to reverberate throughout his allusion-rich texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This small selection from the poems I have written in English in 2012 is aimed mainly at showing how the different styles of versification and rhyme, especially free or blank verse, have changed in the past year. What matters with the poems in this book is that the readers should imagine they are experiencing the stories, thoughts and ideas for themselves alone and not adhering rigidly to any particular metric pattern or established form. The fact that many of the samples are in fact stories is no coincidence. I find that doing a brief resume of a novel in verse first then makes it much easier to write the ensuing book. Indeed the novel I am currently writing, Locked in and Locked Out, is based largely on two of the poems in this selection. As this is the road down which modern poets are meandering more and more, I am happy to be with them on their pilgrimage as I hope my readers will be also. Anton Wills-Eve December 2012.

Book The Words and Music of Carole King

Download or read book The Words and Music of Carole King written by James E. Perone and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-10-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long overdue examination of Carole King offers her legions of fans the chance to see how her work has developed over time, understand what her music means to other contemporary performers, and grasp its significance in American music at large. Name a Carole King song. Anyone who's been a fan of popular music over the past 45 years should be able to do it with ease. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?, Take Good Care Of My Baby, The Locomotion, One Fine Day, Up On The Roof, A Natural Woman, I Feel The Earth Move, Smackwater Jack, It's Too Late, So Far Away, You've Got A Friend. Few writers can claim such a formidable catalogue. Fewer still can with justice claim to have spoken for a generation. After collaborating with Paul Simon in high school and composing hits for The Shirelles; Aretha Franklin; The Monkees; Blood, Sweat & Tears; and other artists throughout the 1960s, Carole King launched herself into the spotlight with the 1971 album Tapestry. Tapestry sold over 22 million copies, and was one of the most important feminist statements of the day, not just because of the words or music, but because King maintained almost total control over her product. Carole King has continued composing and performing breakthrough work since Tapestry, though over the past 15 years audiences are more likely to have heard her music in films such as One True Thing, You've Got Mail, and A League of Their Own. In 1988, the National Academy of Songwriters presented King and her one-time husband and collaborator Gerry Goffin with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Goffin and King were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as non-performers in 1990. Carole King was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1986. Although Tapestry still stands as King's masterpiece, she recorded many other albums, including Fantasy, Colour of Your Dreams, City Streets, Pearls, Wrap Around Joy, Touch the Sky, Simple Things, Thoroughbred, Love Makes the World, Welcome Home, and Really Rosie. All of these are discussed in the course of this volume, as are songs covered and performed by other artists.

Book A concordance to the rhymes of The Faerie Queene

Download or read book A concordance to the rhymes of The Faerie Queene written by Richard Danson Brown and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first ever concordance to the rhymes of Spenser’s epic. It gives the reader unparalleled access to the formal nuts and bolts of this massive poem: the rhymes which he used to structure its intricate stanzas. As well as the main concordance to the rhymes, the volume features a wealth of ancillary materials, which will be of value to both professional Spenserians and students, including distribution lists and an alphabetical listing of all the words in The Faerie Queene. The volume breaks new ground by including two studies by Richard Danson Brown and J. B. Lethbridge, so that the reader is given provocative analyses alongside the raw data about Spenser as a rhymer. Brown considers the reception of rhyme, theoretical models and how Spenser’s rhymes may be reading for meaning. Lethbridge in contrast discusses the formulaic and rhetorical character of the rhymes.

Book Rhyme over Reason

Download or read book Rhyme over Reason written by Réka Benczes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are fascinated by what words sound like. This fascination also drives us to search for meaning in sound - thereby contradicting the principle of the arbitrariness of the linguistic sign. Phonesthemes, onomatopoeia or rhyming compounds all share the property of carrying meaning by virtue of what they sound like, simply because language users establish an association between form and meaning. By drawing on a wide array of examples, ranging from conventionalized words and expressions to brand names and slogans, this book offers a comprehensive account of the role that sound symbolism and rhyme/alliteration plays in English, and by doing so, advocates a more relaxed view of the category 'morpheme' that is able to incorporate less regular word-formation processes.

Book Extraordinary Aesthetes

Download or read book Extraordinary Aesthetes written by Joseph Bristow and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fin de siècle not only designated the end of the Victorian epoch but also marked a significant turn towards modernism. Extraordinary Aesthetes critically examines literary and visual artists from England, Ireland, and Scotland whose careers in poetry, fiction, and illustration flourished during the concluding years of the nineteenth century. This collection draws special attention to the exceptional contributions that artists, poets, and novelists made to the cultural world of the late 1880s and 1890s. The essays illuminate a range of established, increasingly acknowledged, and lesser-known figures whose contributions to this brief but remarkably intense cultural period warrant close attention. Such figures include the critically neglected Mabel Dearmer, whose stunning illustrations appear in Evelyn Sharp’s radical fairy tales for children. Equally noteworthy is the uncompromising short fiction of Ella D’Arcy, who played a pivotal role in editing the most famous journal of the 1890s, The Yellow Book. The discussion extends to a range of legendary writers, including Max Beerbohm, Oscar Wilde, and W.B. Yeats, whose works are placed in dialogue with authors who gained prominence during this period. Bringing women’s writing to the fore, Extraordinary Aesthetes rebalances the achievements of artists and writers during the rapidly transforming cultural world of the fin de siècle.
