Book Rhyme and Reason in Reading and Spelling

Download or read book Rhyme and Reason in Reading and Spelling written by Lynette Bradley and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursery rhymes have been told to children for centuries. Many people think that they are just meant to make children smile. However, preschool children's awareness of rhyme and alliteration has an important influence on their success in learning to read and to spell. In Rhyme and Reason in Reading and Spelling, the authors explore this causal hypothesis using a new research design of combining longitudinal methods with intervention, and they provide strong evidence to show that there is a positive relationship between recognizing similar sounds, as found in nursery rhymes, and learning to read and to spell. The authors also investigate the relationship of this skill to children's learning difficulties. This is the first volume in the International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities Monograph series.

Book Between Rhyme and Reason

Download or read book Between Rhyme and Reason written by Stanislav Shvabrin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of such global bestsellers as Lolita and Pale Fire, Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) is also one of the most controversial literary translators and translation theorists of modern time. In Between Rhyme and Reason, Stanislav Shvabrin discloses the complexity, nuance, and contradictions behind Nabokov's theory and practice of literalism to reveal how and why translation came to matter to Nabokov so much. Drawing on familiar as well as unknown materials, Shvabrin traces the surprising and largely unknown trajectory of Nabokov's lifelong fascination with translation to demonstrate that, for Nabokov, translation was a form of intellectual communion with his peers across no fewer than six languages. Empowered by Mikhail Bakhtin's insights into the interactive roots of literary creativity, Shvabrin's interpretative chronicle of Nabokov's involvement with translation shows how his dialogic encounters with others in the medium of translation left verbal vestiges on his own creations. Refusing to regard translation as a form of individual expression, Nabokov translated to communicate with his interlocutors, whose words and images continue to reverberate throughout his allusion-rich texts.

Book Hip Hop and Philosophy

Download or read book Hip Hop and Philosophy written by Derrick Darby and published by Open Court. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there too much violence in hip-hop music? What’s the difference between Kimberly Jones and the artist Lil' Kim? Is hip-hop culture a "black" thing? Is it okay for N.W.A. to call themselves niggaz and for Dave Chappelle to call everybody bitches? These witty, provocative essays ponder these and other thorny questions, linking the searing cultural issues implicit — and often explicit — in hip-hop to the weighty matters examined by the great philosophers of the past. The book shows that rap classics by Lauryn Hill, OutKast, and the Notorious B.I.G. can help uncover the meanings of love articulated in Plato's Symposium; that Rakim, 2Pac, and Nas can shed light on the conception of God's essence expressed in St. Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologica; and explores the connection between Run-D.M.C., Snoop Dogg, and Hegel. Hip-Hop and Philosophy proves that rhyme and reason, far from being incompatible, can be mixed and mastered to contemplate life's most profound mysteries.

Book excerpt: Rhyme & Reason conveys the internal pain and struggle of those dealing with mental illness, homelessness, addiction, and dementia. Through non-fiction, narrative verse, the content personifies the actual symptom profiles of some of the most common and severe mental health conditions. Black and white line art drawings provide a visual context for the lived experience of each diagnosis. The interpretive artwork invites the reader to color and reflect through the medium of colored pencils. Notes & Doodles pages follow each rhyme, prompting the reader to note critical points and journal their thoughts and feelings. Finally, a comprehensive resource page sums up the primary objective of this unique publication. This collection of poems is to be used as a guide for people who may be experiencing mental health challenges and those who love them. Art and verse combine to provide a simplistic, interactive approach to early symptom recognition and mental health awareness. Mental illness is plagued by a stigma that can force people with life-threatening symptoms to go underground. Through education, we can demystify the stigma, point the way to accessing services, and save lives.

Book Rhyme and Reason

Download or read book Rhyme and Reason written by Subathra Raman and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is so much power in the written word, but that power is often forgotten or overlooked by young people, so pressured by school, family, and the future. Rhyme and Reason is a collection that creates characters a younger audience can identify with. In so doing, poet Subathra Raman seeks to instill a love of words and nature at an early age. Some would say poetry is just for grown-ups. Well, that isnt true. A child can learn just as much from the written word as his or her father or mother. Poems in this collection focus on the varied themes of nature and its wonders, the animal kingdom, and vibrant personalities in a world of fantasy and imagination. Color photographs match the theme of each poem, and themes are far-reaching. For instance, Subathra explains why words are so powerfuland how to use them to heal instead of hurt. She discusses how our thoughts control us, so why not have good thoughts? She also reminds young people to observe the wonders of nature and pay attention to life, one day at a time.
