Using affective and feminist materialist approaches to rhetorical criticism, Stephanie Larson examines how discourses about rape and sexual assault rely on strategies of containment, denying the felt experiences of victims and ultimately stalling broader claims for justice. Investigating anti-pornography debates from the 1980s, Violence Against Women Act advocacy materials, sexual assault forensic kits, public performances, and the #MeToo movement, Larson reveals how our language privileges male perspectives and, more deeply, how it is shaped by systems of power—patriarchy, white supremacy, ableism, and heteronormativity. Interrogating how these systems work to propagate masculine commitments to “science” and “hard evidence,” Larson finds that US culture holds a general mistrust of testimony by women, stereotyping it as “emotional.” But she also gives us hope for change, arguing that testimonies grounded in the bodily, material expression of violation are necessary for giving voice to victims of sexual violence and presenting, accurately, the scale of these crimes. Larson makes a case for visceral rhetorics, theorizing them as powerful forms of communication and persuasion. Demonstrating the communicative power of bodily feeling, Larson challenges the long-held commitment to detached, distant, rationalized discourses of sexual harassment and rape. Timely and poignant, the book offers a much-needed corrective to our legal and political discourses.

Through attentive readings of a wide range of literary and cultural representations of sexual assault--from antebellum seduction narratives and "realist" representations of rape in nineteenth-century novels to Deliverance, American Psycho, and contemporary feminist accounts--Sabine Sielke traces the evolution of a specifically American rhetoric of rape. She considers the kinds of cultural work that this rhetoric has performed and finds that rape has been an insistent figure for a range of social, political, and economic issues. Sielke argues that the representation of rape has been a major force in the cultural construction of sexuality, gender, race, ethnicity, class, and indeed national identity. At the same time, her acute analyses of both canonical and lesser-known texts explore the complex anxieties that motivate such constructions and their function within the wider cultural imagination. Provoked in part by contemporary feminist criticism, Reading Rape also challenges feminist positions on sexual violence by interrogating them as part of the history in which rape has been a convenient and conventional albeit troubling trope for other concerns and conflicts. This book teaches us what we talk about when we talk about rape. And what we're talking about is often something else entirely: power, money, social change, difference, and identity.

The writing style ranges from scholarly to more conversational and cheeky (especially when obviously fallacious reasoning appears in hosts' arguments). Finally, the authors critically discuss the concept of American Exceptionalism and how it underlies the premises of many of the hosts.

This is largely due to the inherent patriarchy and hegemonic masculine ideologies that set rigid power boundaries in the military. The roles of powerful and powerless are indoctrinated into Servicemembers from the first moment of training, and are reified throughout one's military career. Internal rhetoric is a form of discourse which, like all discourse, aids in constructing meaning. Military training and influences internal rhetoric. Further, military sexual assault (MSA) directly and negatively impacts a victim's internal discourse in a way that in turn shifts his/her self and world-views. In order to present a holistic and truly interdisciplinary research result, this thesis will first outline the nature of hegemonic masculine military ideology, its role in MSA, and its impact on female Servicemembers from a critical intercultural communication lens; and then to methodically explore the meaning, motive, and character of a victim's internal rhetoric using Kenneth Burke's cluster-agon rhetorical analysis method on the private autoethnography of a survivor of military-on-military rape victimization. The objective of this research is to contribute an interdisciplinary qualitative perspective on the intersectionality of the three primary areas of military hegemonic masculine ideology, military sexual assault, and internal rhetoric (or 'self-talk') of the victimized.

Book excerpt: Rape memoirs have been present on our bookshelves ever since the groundbreaking publication of I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou in 1969. The combination of storytelling, sexual violence, and wide readership has allowed for rape memoirs to make a profound impact on public discourse. This thesis explores how the unique rhetorical situation of rape memoirs, with the heavy reliance on first-person narrative, impacts public discourse, distinct from the #MeToo sharing of sexual violence stories. This thesis is a feminist rhetorical analysis of two notable memoirs within the past five years: Know My Name by Chanel Miller and Unbound by Tarana Burke. To provide thought behind the writing of rape memoirs, I provide my own autoethnography, as well as an Instagram Reel rhetorical analysis to examine the new age of digital memoirs. Due to Burke and Miller0́9s influence and the Instagram Reel0́9s virality, all of these texts serve as essential artifacts within the anti-sexual violence movement, utilizing them as representative models of rape memoirs in popular culture. This thesis explores the rhetorical strategies through which rape memoirs engage public discourse, revealing their role as a feminist tool to combat sexual violence.
