Book excerpt: Because the need to improve the teaching of literature in the secondary school persists, this study concentrated on the effect of adapting rhetorical concepts and techniques to the literature program. Four basic assumptions were made: 1) A consideration of rhetorical theory with its historical relationship to education provides a key to the improvement of secondary English curricula; 2) One rhetorical concept (rhetorical stance), when applied to one aspect of the secondary English curriculum (the teaching of literature), is one means of improving curricula; 3) In view of existing systematic evaluation models, Stufflebeam's CIPP Evaluation Model is a workable design for assessing this literature program; and 4) When subjected to context, input, process, and product evaluation, the proposed rhetorical stance schema is a technique for improving a secondary English curriculum.

This occurs despite the fact that modern rhetoric no longer accepts either the views of mind, language, and world underlying ancient theory or the concepts about discourse, knowledge, and communication presented in that theory. As a result, teachers are depending on ideas as outmoded as they are unreflectively accepted. Knoblauch and Brannon maintain that the two traditions are fundamentally incompatible in their assumptions and concepts, so that writing teachers must make choices between them if their teaching is to be purposeful and consistent. They suggest that the modern tradition offers a richer basis for instruction, and they show what teaching from that perspective looks like and how it differs from traditional teaching.

Rhetorical Strategies and Genre Conventions in Literary Studies is the first examination of rhetorical practice in the research and teaching of literary study and a detailed assessment of the ethics and efficacy of explicit instruction in the rhetorical strategies and genre conventions of the discipline. Using rhetorical analysis, ethnographic observation, and individual interviews, Wilder demonstrates how rhetorical conventions play a central, although largely tacit, role in the teaching of literature and the evaluation of student writing. Wilder follows a group of literature majors and details their experiences. Some students received experimental, explicit instruction in the special topoi, while others received more traditional, implicit instruction. Arguing explicit instruction in disciplinary conventions has the potential to help underprepared students, Wilder explores how this kind of instruction may be incorporated into literature courses without being overly reductive. Taking into consideration student perspectives, Wilder makes a bold case for expanding the focus of research in writing in the disciplines and writing across the curriculum in order to grasp the full complexity of disciplinary discourse.
