Book The Tragedy of Origins

Download or read book The Tragedy of Origins written by John D. Lyons and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying the relationship between tragedy and history in early modern France, this book focuses on the work of Pierre Corneille, who was more insistent on the importance of this relationship than any of the other playwrights of the period. The writing of a tragedy takes place within a social context that deeply influences what constitutes "history", "tragedy", "authority", and "poetics". Yet such concepts are also practices that in turn shape the society in which they occur. We cannot look to drama for a kind of fossilized footprint or photographic plate of the period in which a play was written, nor can we assume that a playwright's images are simple escapes from a reality outside the theater. What is the relationship, in early seventeenth-century France, between tragedy and history as ways of telling about human experience? The author's readings of five Cornelian tragedies - Horace, Cinna, Polyeucte, Sertorius, and Attila - lead to a sustained reflection on the tragic structure as a confrontation between the present and the past. The "present" in question is the present of the world of the tragic story, not the present of the play's audience. In this sense, the present of Horace or Cinna is the same now as it was for the French of the 1630's and 1640's. Within these plays a present, a moment of Roman history, is confronted with its past. The author argues that this confrontation, which requires the recognition of an irreversible transformation, founds a new political and social order. The experience of this transformation is, for the protagonists, wrenching dislocation - in historical terms, an origin, and in dramatic terms, a tragedy.

Book excerpt: 'Hawcroft provides some remarkable insights.' -Michael Moriarty, TLS'Hawcroft's analyses are wide-ranging, perceptive and skilful. He wants to demonstrate, and has admirably demonstrated, the survival of rhetoric.' -Michael Moriarty, TLSRhetoric is the art of persuasion, whether spoken or written. The first chapter of this book sets out its principles comprehensively and lucidly, with a wide range of illustrative examples. Subsequent chapters explore rhetoric at work in different genres, via close reading of texts which range from the drama of Racine and Beckett; Montaigne, Sévigné and Gide on the self; Zola and Sarraute's prose fiction; poetry by D'Aubigné, Baudelaire, and Césaire; and the oratory of de Gaulle and Yourcenar. This is both a rhetorical handbook and an illustration of critical practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corneille virtually founded seventeenth-century French tragedy: Le Cid and the three subsequent tragedies gave the genre its models and much of its theory. Many critics have created a synthetic picture of "Cornelian heroism" by seeing these four plays as representative of all Corneille's work, thus neglecting the sixteen others that followed. Now the tide has turned: scholars are trying to analyse the meaning of Cornielle's work with close reference to historical events and political ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this three-part study of the serious plays that Corneille wrote between 1630 and 1643, David Clarke first explores the Norman experience and identity of the dramatist himself. A second section reviews the principles and distinctiveness of his poetics in a period when literary activity, and particularly historical drama, became increasingly subject to central government pressures. The third and final section discusses the political and tragic significance of Corneille's plays and seeks to re-establish a link between their reflection of contemporary ideological tensions and the 'collective mind' of their intended audience with reference to popular, but now little-read, contemporary moralists and political theorists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes the plays The Liar, The Illusion, Le Cid Pierre Corneille (1606–84), the great seventeenth-century neoclassical dramatist, wrote over thirty plays during his long and varied career. Triumphant in both comedy and tragedy, his plays remain at the core of the repertory. When the young Molière saw The Liar (Le Menteur), a delightful chronicle of a pathological liar’s adventures in love, he decided to become a playwright. The Illusion (L’Illusion Comique) is a fascinating and mysterious tragi-comedy, one of the first plays to explore consciously the relationship between theatre and the real world. Le Cid, Corneille’s best known play, was controversial in its day, and led to a resurgence in French drama. Ranjit Bolt’s version of The Liar finds a way of rendering rhyming couplets which ‘no one else from the history of translating for the theatre has ever done...with some style and without sacrificing the sense of gallantry that is so essential to the original text.’ (BBC Radio3’s Critics Forum.) Both The Liar and The Illusion recently enjoyed critical and box office success at the Old Vic, reaffirming Ranjit Bolt as one of the world’s foremost translators of drama.
