But the rhetorical terminology in most cases carried with it rhetorical thinking, traces of whose influence persist in criticism of poetry to the present day. The essay is divided into two parts. Part First treats of the influence of rhetoric on the general theory of poetry within the period, and Part Second of its influence on the renaissance formulation of the purpose of poetry. To him metaphor was essentially a transference of meaning from one word to another over the bridge of analogy.2 Later definitions only phrase somewhat differ ently the same idea. Metaphor is the use of a word denoting one object to indicate another object resembling the first in some particular; or it is the comparison of two objects; or it is the affirmation of the identity of two objects.2 In spite of superficial diversities, it is evident that all these definitions come in the end to the same thing. Each is based upon a recognition of the composite character of. The metaphor. Each resolves the figure into at least two parts. There is the thing meant and the thing said; the object of which the writer is speaking and the object to Which it is compared. What rhetorician has not seen that when one speaks of oak-trees as green-robed senators 3 two distinct elements are involved, (1) the trees and (2) the senators, to which they are compared? And in addition to these two constituents a third is often noted, the resemblance which exists between the two objects and justi fies their comparison. Rhetoric deals with all these universal and lifelong processes; hence, its practical importance is obvious and emphatic. This study, however, got its name from the one exercise of speaking - from the Greek rhetor, speaker - because, in the political life of the Greeks, so much depended on the art of public address. If this study should be named now, and after the most effective means of formal communication, the term would come from reading or writing; and it would not matter which, as each presupposes the other. But we care now nothing for the name except to insist, in obedience to the demands of both life and logic, on its extension over all phases of the discourse process. Until quite recently it has been customary to organize this subject under the literal meaning of the word, attaching it to the chair of oratory in college and confining its practical value to those engaged in public address. Thus, as with the Greeks and Romans, it became the hidden art of the few by which fickle masses were to be swayed.
