Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhetoric a Text-Book, Designed for Use in Schools and Colleges, and for Private Study This work may be said to have grown, rather than to have been written for the purpose of making a book. Having used in the class-room, in academy and college, many of the text-books on Rhetoric, ah cient and modern, foreign and American, and having instructed some classes without using a text-book, I have been most satisfied with the result when the method herein presented has been pursued. This book is therefore the result of actual experiment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Writing and Rhetoric Book 1 Fable

Download or read book Writing and Rhetoric Book 1 Fable written by Fable Stu Ed and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Writing & Rhetoric series method employs fluent reading, careful listening, models for imitation, and progressive steps. It assumes that students learn the best by reading excellent, whole-story examples of litereature and by growing their skills through imitatiion. Each excercise is intended to impart a skill (or tool) that can be employed in all kids of writing and speaking. The excercises are arranged from simple to more complex. What's more, the exercises are cumulative, meaning that later exercises incorporate the skills acquired preceding exercises. This series is a step-by-step apprenticeship in the art of writing and rhetoric. Fable, the first book in the Writing & Rhetoric series, teaches students the practice of close reading and comprehension, summarizing a story aloud and in writing, and amplification of a story through description and dialogue. Students learn how to identify different kinds of stories; determine the beginning, middle, and end of stories; recognize point of view; and see analogous situations, among other essential tools. The Writing & Rhetoric series recovers a proven method of teaching writing, using fables to teach beginning writers the craft of writing well.

Book The Methodical Memory

Download or read book The Methodical Memory written by Sharon Crowley and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2010-08-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first sustained critique of current-traditional rhetorical theory, Sharon Crowley uses a postmodern, deconstructive reading to reexamine the historical development of current-traditional rhetoric. She identifies it (as well as the British new rhetoric from which it developed) as a philosophy of language use that posits universal principles of mind and discourse. Crowley argues that these philosophies are not appropriate bases for the construction of rhetorical theories, much less guides for the teaching of composition. She explains that current-traditional rhetoric is not a rhetorical theory, and she argues that its use as such has led to a misrepresentation of invention. Crowley contends that current-traditional rhetoric continues to prosper because a considerable number of college composition teachers—graduate students, part-time instructors, and teachers of literature—are not involved in the development of the curricula they are asked to teach. As a result, their voices, necessary to create any true representation of the composition teaching experience, are denied access to the scholarly conversations evaluating the soundness of the institutionalized teaching methods derived from the current-traditional approach.

Book Shakespearean Educations

Download or read book Shakespearean Educations written by Coppélia Kahn and published by University of Delaware. This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespearean Educations expands the notion of 'education' beyond the classroom to literary clubs, private salons, public lectures, libraries, primers, and theatrical performance. This collection challenges scholars to consider how different groups in our society have adopted Shakespeare as part of a specifically 'American' education. This book maps the ways in which former slaves, Puritan ministers, university leaders, and working class theatergoers used Shakespeare not only to educate themselves about literature and culture, but also to educate others about their own experience.

A faculty is a power bestowed upon us by God, which power enables us to do anything whether corporal or intellectual. Thought, imagination, memory, are faculties. What IS AN art? Art is an habitual power, that is to say, a power not born with man, but acquired by means of a system of well-approved precepts. Book Effective Expression

Download or read book Effective Expression written by Charles Elbert Rhodes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effective Expression: A Textbook on Composition and Rhetoric for the Four Years of High School and the First Year of College We trust we have made the book self-explanatory. We have emphasized getting ready to write in an introductory chapter, for it is the best approach to the subject; we have treated the fundamental prin ciples and the rhetorical qualities, vitally, for too often they have been but empty words; we have shown the philosophy of the paragraph and the topic-sentence, together with the relation of the topic-sentence to the method of development, for the paragraph is the unit of the composition, and mastery of it goes far toward mastery of the whole subject. We have corrected the popular conception that rhetoric is flowery writing by showing that it is the art of effective writing; we have shown that diction, grammar, the use of figures of speech, and the study of poetry are essential for all who would so handle pure, crude facts, the raw material, as to make the finished product effective. We have shown that oral composition is best treated along with written composition and that such a method both saves time and increases efficiency. The chapter on The Finished Product reveals the importance of bringing the knowledge of literature to bear upon our writing, and shows how and what to read until one has formed his own taste and needs less guidance. This book was released on 2017-07-15 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outlines of Rhetoric for Schools and Colleges Aristotle 1 regards Rhetoric as the Art of Persuasion Whately,2 as the Art of Conviction; Campbell,8 as the Art of Discourse. Campbell's definition is to be preferred as more comprehensive than either of the others, since it includes all forms of literary composition; but Aristotle justly emphasizes the most vital object of all Rhetorical study - which is: to move men to action, to accomplish some definite purpose.
