This new edition covers a considerably broader range of topics than its predecessor, including computational fluid dynamics modelling techniques, liquid/solid flows and applications to areas such as food processing, among others. - Written by two of the world's leading experts, this is the only dedicated non-Newtonian flow reference in print. - Since first publication significant advances have been made in almost all areas covered in this book, which are incorporated in the new edition, including developments in CFD and computational techniques, velocity profiles in pipes, liquid/solid flows and applications to food processing, and new heat/mass transfer methods and models. - Covers both basic rheology and the fluid mechanics of NN fluids - a truly self-contained reference for anyone studying or working with the processing and handling of fluids

Book Studies in Rheology and Hydrodynamics of Dilute Polymer Solutions

Download or read book Studies in Rheology and Hydrodynamics of Dilute Polymer Solutions written by Michael Poreh and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five studies are presented in this publication: A comparison between the behaviour of polymer solutions and flow characteristics of linear elastico-viscous fluid models. The study shows that no linear model can predict consistently all the observed non-Newtonian phenomena of polymer solutions; Turbulent flow of dilute polymer solutions through an annulus. Experimental and theoretical results are presented; Measurements of the dynamic response of flowing polymer solutions with a vibrating torsional quartz crystal are presented. The dynamic elastico-viscous response is found to be independent of the flow characteristics and shear rates; Drag reduction in developing boundary layers by injection of polymer solutions. Reduction of local friction coefficients is of the order of 65 percent, however, energy losses in the injection region decrease the total drag reduction efficiency. Effect of the injection concentration and discharge, width of slot and mean stream velocity are found; Drag reduction and degradation tests of several polymer solutions are presented. (Author).

Book Drag Reduction of Turbulent Flows by Additives

Download or read book Drag Reduction of Turbulent Flows by Additives written by A. Gyr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drag Reduction of Turbulent Flows by Additives is the first treatment of the subject in book form. The treatment is extremely broad, ranging from physicochemical to hydromechanical aspects. The book shows how fibres, polymer molecules or surfactants at very dilute concentrations can reduce the drag of turbulent flow, leading to energy savings. The dilute solutions are considered in terms of the physical chemistry and rheology, and the properties of turbulent flows are presented in sufficient detail to explain the various interaction mechanisms. Audience: Those active in fundamental research on turbulence and those seeking to apply the effects described. Fluid mechanical engineers, rheologists, those interested in energy saving methods, or in any other application in which the flow rate in turbulent flow should be increased.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rheology is the science that studies the behavior of the flow of matter in a liquid state or soft solids under the application of stress or deformation to obtain a response to an applied force. In polymers, rheology is an important tool to understand behavior under processing conditions and to design equipment. Another application for rheology in the polymer field is to understand structure-property relationships by means of molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, stereochemistry, morphology, melt degradation, and performance under processing. This book covers the essential criteria for selecting the best test types for various applications and new developments, for accurately interpreting results, and for determining other areas where rheology and rheological phenomena may be useful in your work.

Book Non Newtonian Flow

Download or read book Non Newtonian Flow written by R. P. Chhabra and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-08-19 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Newtonian materials are encountered in virtually all of the chemical and process industries and a full understanding of their nature and flow characteristics is an essential requirement for engineers and scientists involved in their formulation and handling. This book will bridge the gap between much of the highly theoretical and mathematically complex work of the rheologist and the practical needs of those who have to design and operate plants in which these materials are handled and processed. At the same time, numerous references are included for the benefit of those who need to delve more deeply into the subject. The starting point for any work on non-newtonian fluids is their characterisation over the range of conditions to which they are likely to be subjected during manufacture or utilisation, and this topic is treated early on in the book in a chapter commissioned from an expert in the field of rheological measurements. Coverage of topics is extensive and this book offers a unique and rich selection of material including the flow of single phase and multiphase mixtures in pipes, in packed and fluidised bed systems, heat and mass transfer in boundary layers and in simple duct flows, and mixing etc.An important and novel feature of the book is the inclusion of a wide selection of worked examples to illustrate the methods of calculation. It also incorporates a large selection of problems for the reader to tackle himself.
