Book excerpt: Aged sixteen, wayward Victoria McKenzie flees desperate and confused from home in West Lancashire to a commune in Amsterdam and never speaks to her parents again. Now aged thirty five, single and fancy free, she is settled as a senior polymer chemist working in the ailing Ahrendolie refinery in Rotterdam. Following a serious and unsettling plant incident, she is forced into a long recovery break and plans to take off on holiday with Abby, her best friend and designer flatmate, always up for a new challenge. But Victoria is startled to suddenly learn of an unusual inheritance, Orsbrick Hall, taking her mind back to childhood events and places alongside the Leeds and Liverpool canal she never hoped to experience again. Intrigued by her news, she is summoned to a strange meeting with a Liverpool solicitor and bumps into the quaint Julian, an introverted steampunk writer, all grey hair and flying scarves. But what is it about the creepy Orsbrick Hall that nobody wants to talk about? Why does her past now unravel into an unexpected explosion of crazy scientific revelations and discoveries a hundred and fifty years before, which she would never have believed possible or credible? With Abby and Julian she must track down the source of past family secrecies and find out who the terrifying woman in the purple shawl really is. But will this unleash evil and powerful forces hell bent on her eternal destruction and damnation? And is Julian all he makes out to be? Mauveine is a special novel. Conceived, written and published within the thirty days of November and a winner for the NaNoWriMo 2013 international writer competition.

But a clearing out of historic family junk triggers unexpected events, alerting Abby to question whether all in Orsbrick Hall has returned to the state of normality assumed. A strange artifact of pagan origin is discovered, exhibiting unusual characteristics which Victoria can’t scientifically explain, but her mind is forced to focus on more pressing and personal matters. Fifteen years on and Victoria’s life has evolved. Her dye business is flourishing, Abby runs her international art gallery and both families are nicely settled. However sixteen year old twins Maddie and Bel and their twin brothers Ned and Zac, out on a canal cycling trip, find a key to a local murder which sets off a train of peculiar happenings and confessions. Have the horrific, seventeenth century demons, over whom Mauveine had no influence, gone away or are they back for revenge? Abby quickly realises that the responsibility to confront the McKenzie curse lies with her and now Maddie. But have they the capabilities to overcome the myriad of ghostly, hideous challenges waiting, once the true and disarming nature of their friends and family comes to light? Book Dislocated Memories

Download or read book Dislocated Memories written by Tina Frühauf and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2015 Ruth A. Solie Award from the American Musicological Society The first volume of its kind, Dislocated Memories: Jews, Music, and Postwar German Culture draws together three significant areas of inquiry: Jewish music, German culture, and the legacy of the Holocaust. Jewish music-a highly debated topic-encompasses a multiplicity of musics and cultures, reflecting an inherent and evolving hybridity and transnationalism. German culture refers to an equally diverse concept that, in this volume, includes the various cultures of prewar Germany, occupied Germany, the divided and reunified Germany, and even "German (Jewish) memory," which is not necessarily physically bound to Germany. In the context of these perspectives, the volume makes powerful arguments about the impact of the Holocaust and its aftermath in changing contexts of musical performance and composition. In doing so, the essays in Dislocated Memories cover a wide spectrum of topics from the immediate postwar period with music in the Displaced Persons camps to the later twentieth century with compositions conceived in response to the Holocaust and the klezmer revival at the turn of this century. Dislocated Memories builds on a wide range of recent and critical scholarship in Cold War studies, cultural history, German studies, Holocaust studies, Jewish studies, and memory studies. What binds these distinct fields tightly together are the contributors' specific theoretical inquiries that reflect separate yet interrelated themes such as displacement and memory. While these concepts link the multi-faceted essays on a micro-level, they are also largely connected in their conceptual query by focus, on the macro-level, on the presence and the absence of Jewish music in Germany after 1945. Filled with original research by scholars at the forefront of music, history, and Jewish studies, Dislocated Memories will prove an essential text for scholars and students alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To many writers of the early twentieth century, modernism meant not only the reshaping or abandonment of tradition but also an interest in psychology and in new concepts of space, time, art, and language. Randall Stevenson's important new analysis of the genre presents a lucid, comprehensive introduction to modernist fiction, covering a wide range of writers and works. Drawing on narrative theory and cultural history, Stevenson offers fresh insights into the work of such important modernists as Henry James, Joseph Conrad, Ford Madox Ford, D.H. Lawrence, Wyndham Lewis, Dorothy Richardson, May Sinclair, Virginia Woolf, and James Joyce. In addition he discusses the work of Marcel Proust, an important figure in the development of modernism in Europe. This illuminating book places the new imagination of the modernist age in its historical context and looks at how and why the pressures of early twentieth century life led to the development of this distinctive and influential literary form. This accessible account of modernism, modernity, and the novel will be welcomed by students, scholars, and general readers alike.

Book Dancing around the Well

Download or read book Dancing around the Well written by Eric M. MacPhail and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the transmission and transformation of commonplace wisdom in Renaissance humanism by tracing a series of filiations between classical sayings, anecdotes, and exampes and Renaissance poems, essays, and fictions. The circulation of commonplaces can be understood either as a process of reanimation and revitalization, where frozen sayings thaw out and come to life, or conversely as a process of immobilization and incrustation that petrifies tradition. The paradigmatic figure for this process is the proverbial dance around the well, which expresses both the danger and the compulsion of borrowed speech.

Book Literatim

Book excerpt: "In 1959, shortly before his death and while reflecting over his roller-coaster career as a Hollywood film director, Preston Sturges (who I write about more fully later in this book) remarked, "the only amazing thing about my career...is that I ever had one at all." (1) The same might be said about my career as a physician and historian of medicine. As a young boy, some of my best companions were the characters I met on the pages of novels, stories, theatrical scripts, and screenplays. Fascinated by human stories, contradictions, both moral and physical, and worlds so vastly different from my middle-class, suburban Detroit upbringing, I was inspired to I try my hand at writing some of my own tales. In my teens, I was an active participant in my high school's theatre program (thankfully, in an era when taxpayers still supported the arts as a critical part of the public school curriculum) and wrote a series of incredibly bad plays. Soon enough, I was confronted by the decidedly difficult time I had in coming up with believable plots, a serious handicap for any budding fabulist."--
