Book Privacy Invading Technologies and Privacy by Design

Download or read book Privacy Invading Technologies and Privacy by Design written by Demetrius Klitou and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-05 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privacy-invading technologies (PITs) such as Body scanners; Public space CCTV microphones; Public space CCTV loudspeakers and Human-implantable microchips (RFID implants/GPS implants) are dealt with in this book. The book shows how and why laws that regulate the design and development of privacy-invading technologies (PITs) may more effectively ensure the protection of privacy than laws that only regulate data controllers and the use of such technologies. The premise is supported and demonstrated through a discussion on these four specific PITs as case studies. In doing so, the book overall attempts to explain how laws/regulations that mandate the implementation of Privacy by Design (PBD) could potentially serve as a viable approach for collectively safeguarding privacy, liberty and security in the 21st Century. This book will be of interest to academic researchers, law practitioners, policy makers and technology researchers.

Book Radio Frequency Identification Technologies

Download or read book Radio Frequency Identification Technologies written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-01-29 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is gaining rapid acceptance as a means to track a wide array of manufactured objects. Currently, RFID technologies have shown promise in transportation (e.g., smart fare cards) and commerce (e.g., inventory control) for a variety of uses and are likely to find many new applications in both military and civilian areas if and when current technical issues are resolved. There are a number of policy concerns (e.g., privacy), however, that will become more crucial as the technology spreads. This report presents a summary of a workshop, held by the NRC at the request of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, to explore many of the key technical and policy issues. Several important themes that are likely to govern expansion of RFID technology emerged from the workshop and are discussed.

Book Maritime Security in the Indian Ocean Region

Download or read book Maritime Security in the Indian Ocean Region written by V. R. Raghavan and published by TATA McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian Ocean has emerged as a critical maritime space in the Asia-Pacific Littoral in view of the transformed strategic, security and economic significance of the region. The Indo-Asia-Pacific region is the greatest maritime-littoral space that has the largest concentration of population, resources, developing economies, congested sea lanes, and contested territorial spaces. It is thus significant in a geo-political, geo-economic and geo-strategic sense. The Centre for Security Analysis in collaboration with the Hanns Seidel Foundation organized an international symposium on The Changing Oceanic Landscape of the Indian Ocean Region: Issues of Debate fro 13-15 December, 2006 at Chennai. Analysts, practitioners and academicians from Australia, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and USA participated in the event. This book is a compendium of the papers presented and discussed at the symposium.

Book RFID Handbook

Download or read book RFID Handbook written by Klaus Finkenzeller and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third revised edition of the established and trusted RFID Handbook; the most comprehensive introduction to radio frequency identification (RFID) available. This essential new edition contains information on electronic product code (EPC) and the EPC global network, and explains near-field communication (NFC) in depth. It includes revisions on chapters devoted to the physical principles of RFID systems and microprocessors, and supplies up-to-date details on relevant standards and regulations. Taking into account critical modern concerns, this handbook provides the latest information on: the use of RFID in ticketing and electronic passports; the security of RFID systems, explaining attacks on RFID systems and other security matters, such as transponder emulation and cloning, defence using cryptographic methods, and electronic article surveillance; frequency ranges and radio licensing regulations. The text explores schematic circuits of simple transponders and readers, and includes new material on active and passive transponders, ISO/IEC 18000 family, ISO/IEC 15691 and 15692. It also describes the technical limits of RFID systems. A unique resource offering a complete overview of the large and varied world of RFID, Klaus Finkenzeller’s volume is useful for end-users of the technology as well as practitioners in auto ID and IT designers of RFID products. Computer and electronics engineers in security system development, microchip designers, and materials handling specialists benefit from this book, as do automation, industrial and transport engineers. Clear and thorough explanations also make this an excellent introduction to the topic for graduate level students in electronics and industrial engineering design. Klaus Finkenzeller was awarded the Fraunhofer-Smart Card Prize 2008 for the second edition of this publication, which was celebrated for being an outstanding contribution to the smart card field.
