Book RFID in Maritime Container Logistics

Download or read book RFID in Maritime Container Logistics written by Thomas Will and published by Josef Eul Verlag Gmbh. This book was released on 2011 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the globalization of supply chains, container logistics has been one of the emerging industry areas over the past years. The resulting growth of container handling volume causes the existing container terminals to meet their capacity limits and terminal operators to search for technologies for increasing the throughput of containers considering given terminal capacities. This work identifies RFID as an appropriate technology and provides an overview of its potential advantages in container logistics. The identified RFID-based information benefits are discussed with logistics experts and a subsequently accomplished two-stage Delphi study discovers that RFID in container logistics provides several benefits with varying degrees for each transport chain participant. Furthermore, the author analyzes all transshipment processes of a tri-modal transport chain and develops recommended actions in terms of accelerating and improving RFID-based process modifications. Subsequently, this work provides the results of a case study which measures the possible reduction of transshipment process times and discusses optimizations due to reduced labor requirements. Since the implementation of process modifications in a real-world container terminal is a difficult and costly venture, the author develops a physical miniature demonstrator to map the above presented improvements and illustrates the integration of RFID in maritime container logistics to give an understanding of this technology and its applicability to logistics practitioners. In summary, this work is an excellent contribution to the area of information technology and logistics. The book addresses researchers and students in the areas of business administration and computer science. In addition, managers and process owners in the fields of logistics and information technology can find valuable insights to make their businesses more efficient.

Book RFID Supply Chain Management System for Naval Logistics

Download or read book RFID Supply Chain Management System for Naval Logistics written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Navy is charged with the responsibility of providing a strategic Maritime Pre-positioning Force (MPF). To accomplish this objective the supply chain management system must be designed to allow for real-time accountability, Total Asset Visibility (TAV), rapid deployment and In-Transit Visibility (ITV). The proposed solution consists of a functioning Dynamic Smart Manifest (DSM) embodied in the structure of a Dynamic Smart Box (DSB). A middle-ware called Inteliware interfaces with the RFID components and computers in the DSB and inputs the requisite data into the Dynamic Smart Manifest. The DSB will be housed in a twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) which is the Navy's standard shipping container. The TEU will be outfitted with a system of open sourced RFID readers and antennae designed to read the tagged pallets and items that enter or exit the container. A nested architecture of passive/active tags and nested frequencies will create an aggregate inventory of the TEU's content. The ability to track and update inventory as pallets/containers are reconfigured will be demonstrated. The automation of the process of preparing the pallet/container data will result in the DSM, that will in real time provide the ability to sense and respond, count, record, identify, track and locate items, cartons, pallets and containers.

Book Container Logistics

Download or read book Container Logistics written by Rolf Neise and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst the maritime container business has been studied in depth, the impact on shippers and how shippers deal with the given challenges has not been fully examined. Container Logistics bridges this gap and looks at the maritime business from a customer's perspective. The book examines the challenges, solutions and the latest developments in the container industry as well as the interaction between the different actors involved, such as freight forwarders, supply chain managers and shippers. Current hot topics from the supply chain and the maritime business perspective are included. From the supply chain perspective, Container Logistics covers areas such as the purchase of transportation services from ocean carriers and transport management, to effective and efficient logistics execution. From the maritime business perspective, the book covers topics such as intermodal freight optimisation and hinterland transportation, and terminal and port optimisation. With the inclusion of clear examples of best practice and bona fide case studies, as well as invaluable contributions from an international team of experts, Container Logistics is an essential guide for supply chain managers and shippers, as well as academics and industry professionals working in the maritime business. Online supporting resources include images from the book and chapter summaries.

Book Handbook of Ocean Container Transport Logistics

Download or read book Handbook of Ocean Container Transport Logistics written by Chung-Yee Lee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-13 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is focused on the impact of ocean transport logistics on global supply chains. It is the first book solely dedicated to the topic, linking the interaction of parties along this chain, including shippers, terminal operators and line carriers. While ocean container transport logistics has been greatly studied, there are many important issues that have yet to receive the attention they deserve. The editors and contributing authors of Ocean Container Transport Logistics: Making Global Supply Chain Effective seek to address these topics and shed new light on the subject. The book is divided into three parts. Part I examines the innovation, trends, competition and business model of container terminal operations. In Part II, the book looks at how tactical and operational management is used in shipping liners. The chapters cover topics such as empty container repositioning, slow steaming, routing, network design and disruption management. Finally Part III explores at shippers and global supply chain management, with chapters on transportation service procurement, hinterland transportation, green corridors, as well as competition and co-operation in maritime logistics operations. The eighteen chapters of the book all highlight the immediate effect of ocean transport logistics on global supply chain.
