This was confirmed in tests when resistant larvae absorbed more than 6 times as much radioactive ddt as nonresistant larvae of the same species, yet 20 percent fewer resistant larvae died. When ddt was used in a lighter dosage, resistant larvae absorbed twice as much of the chemical as nonresistant ones, with only 11 percent mortality, compared with 100 percent mortality for the nonresistant larvae. The Crop Reporting Board's latest report on farm prices came out this week, showing that prices received by farmers rose four-tenths of one percent between Feb. 15 and March 15. Higher prices were reported for cotton, beef cattle, corn, wheat, and a few other commodities. Prices dropped during that period for milk, eggs, lettuce and strawberries. Prices paid by farmers also rose during the month, showing a total increase of one-third of one percent. Main reasons were higher prices for feeder livestock and farm machinery. Jake Hess, a Hereford breeder of note, and other principals of the ride fo: show outfit took their turns on camera standing-up. Hess figured the ride a fair exchange for a chance to invite viewers to ride (horseless carriage-style) over to mclean, Texas, for the annual rodeo and horse show. Cotton John figured real cow boys, their horses and chuck wagon, provided the right elements for a good show. Everyone seemed right pleased. Identical twin-calves are no ordinary twins they look alike, act alike, feed alike, and are alike because they developed from the same egg. Their use in research is just the scientist's gimmick to get quick results at lower cost. By using one of the twins as a control, they can get a more accurate test of the feeding of the other than if they used quite a number of ordinary animals for the test. The 20 frames of slide film Jules is sending out this week show how to feed calves so they make a come-back after being a long time on short rations, if they get enough protein, carotene, and minerals.
