Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reynard the Fox The moral ending of the classical story is not one to be given to children. On a recent occasion, having given the story to a low third grade class, it was left at the duel for the class to write the ending. The class, with one exception, punished the recreant Fox severely, - even cruelly, - and the majority with death. The ending appended to this version, written by an eight-year-old girl, was chosen for its happy effect on the interested little readers who had followed so closely the fortunes of Reynard and those associated with him. This adaptation has been prepared, believing that the children who become acquainted with the wily Fox will in later years take keen enjoyment in the classical story. Book excerpt: British poet laureate John Masefield wrote this poem, which concerns a fox hunt that pursues the title character, who "could outlast horse and outrace hound." It is partly inspired by a literary cycle figure named Reynard the Fox who features in medieval allegorical Dutch, English, French and German fables. The stories are largely concerned with the main character Reynard, an anthropomorphic red fox, trickster figure. His adventures usually involve deceiving other anthropomorphic animals for his own advantage or trying to avoid their retaliatory efforts. His main enemy and victim across the cycle is his uncle, the wolf, Isengrim (or Ysengrim).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reynard the Fox: A Renowned Apologue of the Middle Age, Reproduced in Rhyme In the progress through the press of a Poem of between six and seven thousand lines, it was not to be expected that either Author or Printer should be exempt from the ordinary perils of their craft. Would that the sins of omission by the one, were as easily rectified as those of commission by the other! Amongst these last, perhaps the courtesy of the Reader will concede the few following instances, as of sufficient importance to require correction by the pen; other more obvious errors in pointing will suggest themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reynard the Fox in South Africa, or Hottentot Fables and Tales Some questions of no trifling importance and in terest are raised by the appearance of such an nu looked-for mine of literary lore, particularly as to the originality of these Fables. Whether they are indeed the real Offspring of the desert, and can be considered as truly indigenous Native literature, or whether they have been either purloined from the superior white race, or at least brought into existence by the stim ulus which contact with the latter gave to the Native mind (like that resulting in the invention of the Tshiroki and Vei alphabets) may be matters of dis pute for some time to come, and it may require as much research as was expended upon the solv ing of the riddle of the originality of the Ossianic poems. Book Reynard the Fox an Early Apologue of Renown

Download or read book Reynard the Fox an Early Apologue of Renown written by John Storer Cobb and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reynard the Fox, an Early Apologue of Renown: Clad in an English Dress, Fashioned According to the German Model Supplied by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe Although so much in the way of commentary and criticism has been written about this renowned apologue, yet is its origin, still enveloped in an apparently impenetrable fog. Many investigators, noted for learning and persevering research, have labored to clear this away; yet, with every new effort, the only result seems to be a further recession of the date of its birth. The probability of reliable discovery has vanished and naught seems left but to relegate it, as one painstaking enquirer has suggested, to prehistoric times. By some it is regarded as unquestionably a European production; others look upon the fundamental stories as the common property of various Aryan branches of the human, family, and as having been brought from their Asiatic homes by Teutonic migrants.
