Book Rewarding Risk Taking Or Managerial Skill The Case of Private Equity Fund Managers

Download or read book Rewarding Risk Taking Or Managerial Skill The Case of Private Equity Fund Managers written by Axel Buchner and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compensation of private equity fund managers typically consists of a fixed management fee and a performance related carried interest which entitles managers to option-like payoffs. We consider whether this structure tends to reward excessive risk-taking rather than managerial skill. Our model of manager compensation is based on risk-neutral pricing techniques in an equilibrium framework where investors earn zero abnormal returns net-of-fees. When the model is calibrated to a set of buyout funds, our results demonstrate that managers indeed have an incentive for excessive risk-taking in case only fee income from the current finite lifetime fund is considered. In the more realistic setting where managers take into account potential compensation from follow-on funds, the risk-taking incentives will depend on the manager's level of skill. Our model illustrates that the typical contractual arrangements can serve as a means of limiting possible risk-shifting behavior during fund lifetime. Also, skilled managers in this setting even have an incentive to reduce fund risk. Based on our sample of buyout funds we further show that the typical compensation structure is costly. Managers must generate substantial alpha in order to compensate investors for bearing the given fee components. Based on a standard compensation contract, annual break-even alphas amount to around 7 percent, and the present value of total compensation equals about 20 percent of committed capital.

This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Munich (TUM School of Management - Chairs of Entrepreneurial Finance), language: English, abstract: Private Equity (PE) funds are normally organized in a partnership. This partnership (General Partner - GP) jointly raises money from investors (Limited Partners - LPs). The ultimate goal of a GP is to create value with the acquisition, development, and sale of portfolio companies. Besides taking value creation levers into account, the GP has a tremendous influence on the fund performance with its risk-taking in multiple aspects. Thus, there is no comparable risk measure in PE. For example, a GP can increase the riskiness of a deal with a higher financial leverage or more aggressive assumptions about the top-line growth of the underlying business. The goal of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate the main value drivers in PE and compare risk measures with the latest advances of other fields, such as public markets.

Book Ownership Wealth and Risk Taking

Download or read book Ownership Wealth and Risk Taking written by Carsten Bienz and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine the incentive effects of private equity (PE) professionals' ownership in the funds they manage. In a simple model, we show that managers select less risky firms and use more debt financing the higher their ownership. We test these predictions for a sample of PE funds in Norway, where the professionals' private wealth is public. Consistent with the model, firm risk decreases and leverage increases with the manager's ownership in the fund, but largely only when scaled with her wealth. Moreover, the higher the ownership, the smaller is each individual investment, increasing fund diversification. Our results suggest that wealth is of first order importance when designing incentive contracts requiring PE fund managers to coinvest.

Book excerpt: PREFACE The world is now ready to enter a second wave of Coronavirus and several lockdowns. What a year ago seemed too far and like a fairytale, is now a reality and a nightmare all over the world. On March 11, 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Coronavirus disease (a.k.a Covid- 19) a pandemic as it spread in a short time all over the world. The Coronavirus disease has already affected life in many countries. In the long term, it is predicted that it will bring about changes that are quite likely to be permanent. Along with the measures taken on prevention and control of the spread of the outbreak; international supply chains, supply- demand balance, consumer and producer behavior, business methods, working models, education methods and daily life are changing. The concern for all countries needs to be researched in different aspects. The Covid- 19 crisis has caused considerable damage in every aspect of life. We believe that different socio- economic aspects need to be discussed by scholars involved in academia and people who are interested in contributing to this new topic the world is facing. This book comprises nine chapters including topics related to several impacts and challenges that Covid- 19 brought about on economy, education, social life, trade, geopolitical relations, and what is more important on our health care systems. We realize that this editorial book will lead a way to policy makers, implementers, researchers, students and those who are interested in learning more about Covid- 19 impacts all over the world. We hope and believe that it will be widely read As Socrates said: “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new”. Book Leadership Risk

Download or read book Leadership Risk written by David Cooper and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a practical guide for private equity investors. It sets out a framework for understanding, assessing and managing the risks associated with senior management during the due diligence process of an acquisition. This provides an essential input into the wider due diligence review and a sound basis for managing the investment after the deal has been done so as to maximise the chances of a successful exit. The book comes at a time of significant growth in the field of private equity. In the UK over 3 million people (around 18% of all private sector employees) now work for private equity backed companies. It is estimated that European funds currently have somewhere between #200 and #300 billion to invest over the next few years. In the US, the whole issue of private equity due diligence is much more advanced but it is still likely that due diligence will remain a significant issue for private equity investors for the foreseeable future.

Book Performance of Private Equity Funds

Download or read book Performance of Private Equity Funds written by Taro Niggemann and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2005-09-20 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1.0, Otto Beisheim School of Management Vallendar, course: Doppeldiplomprogramm WHU Koblenz / EM Lyon, language: English, abstract: Private equity is currently replacing hedge funds as the most observed asset class. And while mutual funds experience a decline of assets under management, buyout funds break all records as far as fund raising is concerned. The attractiveness of buyout funds among investors is often attributed to superior returns and to an allegedly lower correlation with other asset classes. However, buyout fund returns also show superior volatility. In addition to that risk factor, investors must face liquidity and transparency risk. It is common agreement that investors are compensated for the elevated risk through a return premium. This and the cited lower correlation prompt more and more investors to add private equity into their portfolios. The wide-spread opinion of superior private equity performance is backed by several studies. But the analysis of these studies reveal that a number of them employ methodologies which are disapproved of by experts on theoretical private equity performance measurement. Furthermore, some have a one-sided notion of financial performance. Benchmarking, risk and correlation data which are crucial for an overall performance assessment often lack. The analysis of a series of technically appropriate, objective studies shows that private equity has historically outperformed public equity with regard to returns, in Europe more than in the United States (US). What remains unsolved is to which extent this return premium rewards the inherent, additional risk of private equity investments. And what is more certain: the prevalent view on correlation seems to be wrong. Empirical evidence and qualitative analysis speak for high correlation between private equity and the major asset classes. The most important driver for individual fund performance appears to be the quality of fund management. Thereby, specialized teams outperform others. Moreover, specialized funds provide investors better opportunity to diversify their private equity portfolio. Fundraising and investment conditions for private equity funds in France and Germany are favorable, but the accomplishment of superior performance will become harder in the future. The rules of the private equity business are changing as operating leverage has replaced financial leverage as the essential value driver.

Private Equity 4.0 examines the role, workings and contribution of this important industry in a straightforward yet revealing manner.” Dr. Josh Lerner Jacob H. Schiff Professor of Investment Banking Chair, Entrepreneurial Management Unit Harvard Business School A multi-perspective look at private equity's inner workings Private Equity 4.0 provides an insider perspective on the private equity industry, and analyzes the fundamental evolution of the private equity asset class over the past 30 years, from alternative to mainstream. The book provides insightful interviews of key industry figures, and case studies of some of the success stories in the industry. It also answers key questions related to strategy, fund manager selection, incentive mechanisms, performance comparison, red flags in prospectuses, and more. Private Equity 4.0 offers guidance for the many stakeholders that could benefit from a more complete understanding of this special area of finance. Understand the industry's dominant business models Discover how value is created and performance measured Perform a deep dive into the ecosystem of professionals that make the industry hum, including the different incentive systems that support the industry's players Elaborate a clear set of guidelines to invest in the industry and deliver better performance Written by a team of authors that combine academic and industry expertise to produce a well-rounded perspective, this book details the inner workings of private equity and gives readers the background they need to feel confident about committing to this asset class. Coverage includes a historical perspective on the business models of the three major waves of private equity leading to today's 4.0 model, a detailed analysis of the industry today, as well as reflections on the future of private equity and prospective futures. It also provides readers with the analytical and financial tools to analyze a fund's performance, with clear explanations of the mechanisms, organizations, and individuals that make the system work. The authors demystify private equity by providing a balanced, but critical, review of its contributions and shortcomings and moving beyond the simplistic journalistic descriptions. Its ecosystem is complex and not recognizing that complexity leads to inappropriate judgments. Because of its assumed opacity and some historical deviant (and generally transient) practices, it has often been accused of evil intents, making it an ideal scapegoat in times of economic crisis, prodding leading politicians and regulators to intervene and demand changes in practices. Unfortunately, such actors were often responding to public calls for action rather than a thorough understanding of the factors at play in this complex interdependent system, doing often more harm than good in the process and depriving economies of one of their most dynamic and creative forces. Self-regulation has clearly shown its limits, but righteous political interventions even more so. Private equity investment can be a valuable addition to many portfolios, but investors need a clear understanding of the forces at work before committing to this asset class. With detailed explanations and expert insights, Private Equity 4.0 is a comprehensive guide to the industry ways and means that enables the reader to capture its richness and sustainability.
