Je tacherai donc de dessiner les personnages et les caracteres que l'on vient de mettre en scene, tels que le poete les a compris et tels que l'etude et la reflexion me les montrent; et, comme ces caracteres tiennent de pres, non seulement a l'histoire de la Refor mation, mais aussi a l'histoire de Geneve et meme a celle de la Suisse, peut - etre le lecteur me saura-t - il gre de ce travail. C'est par là non par une certaine indolence de l'esprit ou une certaine insouciance du coeur, que s'explique le courage de sa pensée, l'attention avec laquelle, sur tous les sujets, il prète l'oreille aux plus légers murmures de sa raison, la tranquillité froide avec laquelle il confie au papier des choses que tout autre se fût à peine confiées à soi-mème, cette impartialité dont ses éditeurs, quelque amis du vrai qu'ils fussent eux-mèmes, ne se sont pas crus obligés de conserver toutes les traces, enfin ces contradictions qu -ls n'ont pas toutes efi'acées, et dont l'admirable sincérité de l'écrivain peut seule nous expliquer la présence. Il les eût fait disparaître en publiant son livre: je le crois bien; mais ce u'eût pas été avant de les avoir résolues; on ne peut ètre faux avec son lecteur après avoir été si vrai avec soi-mème nul n'est menteur 'a demi. Pascal n'eût pourtant pas imprimé, mais enfin il a écrit ces mots remarquables S'il y a jamais un temps auquel on doive faire profession des deux contraires, c'est quand un reproche qu'on en omet un. Donc les jésuites et les jausénistes ont tort ou les celant, mais les janséuistes plus, car les jésuites ont mieux fait profession des deux.
