Book God s Child

Download or read book God s Child written by Terrence Steven Lake and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrence Steven Lake grew up black in Hamtramck, Michigan, with friends of all different colors. While he could get along with everyone, he also spoke his mind. For instance, there was a white friend at work from a totally different environment. The author told his co-worker that the white race as a whole had been the most violent race of people in the history of the world, explaining how the pharaohs came to Africa to enslave people to build pyramids pointing at certain planets at a certain time of the year. After meeting and marrying Valerie, the author found himself increasingly questioning religion. Doubts about the nature and purpose of God, the universe, and man's place in the world began to plague him. In sharing his life story, the author hopes to show that there is a reason that different races were put on planet Earth, and until that purpose is fulfilled, those who are not enlightened will be a threat to peace.

Book The Structure of Moral Revolutions

Download or read book The Structure of Moral Revolutions written by Robert Baker and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical account of moral revolutions, illustrated by historical cases that include the criminalization and decriminalization of abortion and the patient rebellion against medical paternalism. We live in an age of moral revolutions in which the once morally outrageous has become morally acceptable, and the formerly acceptable is now regarded as reprehensible. Attitudes toward same-sex love, for example, and the proper role of women, have undergone paradigm shifts over the last several decades. In this book, Robert Baker argues that these inversions are the product of moral revolutions that follow a pattern similar to that of the scientific revolutions analyzed by Thomas Kuhn in his influential book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. After laying out the theoretical terrain, Baker develops his argument with examples of moral reversals from the recent and distant past. He describes the revolution, led by the utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham, that transformed the postmortem dissection of human bodies from punitive desecration to civic virtue; the criminalization of abortion in the nineteenth century and its decriminalization in the twentieth century; and the invention of a new bioethics paradigm in the 1970s and 1980s, supporting a patient-led rebellion against medical paternalism. Finally, Baker reflects on moral relativism, arguing that the acceptance of “absolute” moral truths denies us the diversity of moral perspectives that permit us to alter our morality in response to changing environments.

Book The Romantic Revolution in America 1800 1860

Download or read book The Romantic Revolution in America 1800 1860 written by Vernon Louis Parrington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of literature between 1800 and 1860 in the United States was heavily influenced by two wars. The War of 1812 hastened the development of nineteenth-century ideals, and the Civil War uprooted certain growths of those vigorous years. The half century between these dramatic episodes was a period of extravagant vigor, the final outcome being the emergence of a new middle class. Parrington argues that America was becoming a new world with undreamed potential. This new era was no longer content with the ways of a founding generation. The older America of colonial days had been static, rationalistic, inclined to pessimism, and fearful of innovation. During the years between the Peace of Paris (1763) and the end of the War of 1812, older America was dying. The America that emerged, which is the focal point of this volume, was a shifting, restless world, eager to better itself, bent on finding easier roads to wealth than the plodding path of natural increase. The culture of this period also changed. Formal biographies written in this period often gave way to eulogy; it was believed that a writer was under obligation to speak well of the dead. Consequently, scarcely a single commentary of the times can be trusted, and the critic is reduced to patching together his account out of scanty odds and ends. A new introduction by Bruce Brown highlights the life of Vernon Louis Parrington and explains the importance of this second volume in the Pulitzer Prize-winning study.

Book Atlantic Creoles in the Age of Revolutions

Download or read book Atlantic Creoles in the Age of Revolutions written by Jane G. Landers and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sailing the tide of a tumultuous era of Atlantic revolutions, a remarkable group of African-born and African-descended individuals transformed themselves from slaves into active agents of their lives and times. Big Prince Whitten, the black Seminole Abraham, and General Georges Biassou were “Atlantic creoles,” Africans who found their way to freedom by actively engaging in the most important political events of their day. These men and women of diverse ethnic backgrounds, who were fluent in multiple languages and familiar with African, American, and European cultures, migrated across the new world’s imperial boundaries in search of freedom and a safe haven. Yet, until now, their extraordinary lives and exploits have been hidden from posterity. Through prodigious archival research, Jane Landers radically alters our vision of the breadth and extent of the Age of Revolution, and our understanding of its actors. Whereas Africans in the Atlantic world are traditionally seen as destined for the slave market and plantation labor, Landers reconstructs the lives of unique individuals who managed to move purposefully through French, Spanish, and English colonies, and through Indian territory, in the unstable century between 1750 and 1850. Mobile and adaptive, they shifted allegiances and identities depending on which political leader or program offered the greatest possibility for freedom. Whether fighting for the King of Kongo, England, France, or Spain, or for the Muskogee and Seminole chiefs, their thirst for freedom helped to shape the course of the Atlantic revolutions and to enrich the history of revolutionary lives in all times.

Book It s about God and the Amer Ican People

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no end To The amount of criticism and satire that circulates every day regarding our current political system. Many Americans easily recognize that this nation is not at all what it used to be. But how many are led To The voting booths to cast a vote for candidates that they didn't choose and don't seem that different? How many people simply accept as fact that America must have a two-party political system? With a call to organized, peaceful action, It's About God sets forth the principles and ideas that Americans need to find their way back to full freedom. He courageously stands up against the stilted media's grand portrayal of our two parties as fighting, when they actually benefit from playing off of each other. Pointing citizens back to their original principles, It's About God explicitly defends the American right to believe in any religion Americans want, but still argues that anyone can see the moral stature of the nation's roots. As an avid patriot, Joe S. Amer-Ican calls vigorously for a return to true American values. In his no-nonsense approach and style, he seals the case against anti-American politicians and systems that are designed to control our minds, end our democracy, and abolish our freedom. He offers real solutions and insight, first with a call to God, and then with actions that can set the foundations for freeing our nation from the bondage of greed. Book A Stranger in the House of God

Download or read book A Stranger in the House of God written by John Koessler and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith

Book Embracing Hopelessness

  • ISBN : 1506433421

Download or read book Embracing Hopelessness written by Miguel A. De La Torre and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will attempt to explore faith-based responses to unending injustices by embracing the reality of hopelessness. It rejects the pontifications of some salvation history that move the faithful toward an eschatological promise that, when looking back at history, makes sense of all Christian-led brutalities, mayhem, and carnage. To embrace hopelessness moves away from a middle-class privilege that assumes all is going to work out in the end. By upsetting the norm, an opportunity might arise that can lead us to a more just situation, although such acts of defiance usually lead to crucifixion. Hopelessness is what leads to radical liberative praxis.

Book Journey to God

Download or read book Journey to God written by sanjeev sareen and published by sanjeev sareen. This book was released on with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all are on the Spiritual Journey called the Journey to God. The journey starts from ‘I’, as various ego identifications, and gets completed when we realize ourselves- as we truly are. A stage comes in everyone’s life, when not getting permanent happiness, after suffering in many incarnations, a Spiritual Awakening is there. We start looking for Spiritual Direction. This book describes in detail the whole journey and how it matters to us. Various Questions about life keep emerging. A small voice within begins to question: Who am I? who is God? why God made the world? what is my relationship with God? what is the purpose of my creation? Who am I and why do I matter? The Search for the meaning of life then begins. In many ways, it is the central struggle of every human life. And whether you are 7 or 70 or someplace in between, you need to know these. The question, of who I am is the most profound and deepest question of all time; the first question in all philosophies. Getting to know the Self, and realizing it is the way to God-realization. Though it took around 60 days to complete this book, it contains 60 years of my introspection on these soul-searching questions. I have tried to share my knowledge on these questions responsibly, with several examples, stories, poems, experiments, inferred deductions, and Vedic explanations. The book will surely demand sufficient attention and stretch of the mind in certain places to understand the subtle subject. The practice part of the knowledge gained thus- essential for complete realization, is covered in part 2 of this book. After realization, the journey is completed when we feel oneness with God and everything. In that stage, as Vivekananda says, “I has all become and all is I. Oneness in all beings. All beings in self and self in all beings”. That brings freedom from suffering and sorrow. Journey with me, know about you and find the purpose of life. The journey through this book can transform you from a limited ‘I’ to the Infinite Self. And you are already that. The book will try to bring up to your conscious awareness the things you already knew deep within but have forgotten now.
