Book Nigeria s Adventures in Technology

Download or read book Nigeria s Adventures in Technology written by Dike N. Kalu and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria's Adventures in Technology deals with important scientific and technological issues mainly as they pertain to Nigeria. The author calls for a revolution in science and technology in Nigeria since these enterprises have so far failed to thrive in the country. The reasons for this failure, according to the author, go beyond Nigeria's endemic corruption which will frustrate any societal developmental effort in the country no matter how well-meaning. Fortunately the causes of the failure are obvious to the author who not only identifies them but also offers simple solutions that will ultimately ensure the feasibility of using science and technology, the acknowledged instruments of development, to advance socioeconomic growth in Nigeria. In pursuance of his plea for Nigeria to do more than just pay lip service to science and technology and to promote a better understanding of technological issues by the Nigerian public, in a second essay the author discusses the underpinnings of nuclear power which Nigeria recently embraced; he then explores satellite technology in view of the recent successful launching of two Nigerian satellites into orbit; finally the author surveys the issue of life expectancy which should be of interest to all Nigerians in view of the abysmally short mean length of life in the country. Professor Dike N Kalu purposefully wrote this book in a layman's language and made it concise with a total of only 86 pages so that anyone can read it in a very short time. Nigeria's Adventures in Technology is a must-read for every Nigerian especially policy makers, politicians, the youths, high school teachers, professors, university and high school students, and international friends and well-wishers of Nigeria.

Book What Do Science Technology and Innovation Mean from Africa

Download or read book What Do Science Technology and Innovation Mean from Africa written by Clapperton Chakanetsa Mavhunga and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explorations of science, technology, and innovation in Africa not as the product of “technology transfer” from elsewhere but as the working of African knowledge. In the STI literature, Africa has often been regarded as a recipient of science, technology, and innovation rather than a maker of them. In this book, scholars from a range of disciplines show that STI in Africa is not merely the product of “technology transfer” from elsewhere but the working of African knowledge. Their contributions focus on African ways of looking, meaning-making, and creating. The chapter authors see Africans as intellectual agents whose perspectives constitute authoritative knowledge and whose strategic deployment of both endogenous and inbound things represents an African-centered notion of STI. “Things do not (always) mean the same from everywhere,” observes Clapperton Chakanetsa Mavhunga, the volume's editor. Western, colonialist definitions of STI are not universalizable. The contributors discuss topics that include the trivialization of indigenous knowledge under colonialism; the creative labor of chimurenga, the transformation of everyday surroundings into military infrastructure; the role of enslaved Africans in America as innovators and synthesizers; the African ethos of “fixing”; the constitutive appropriation that makes mobile technologies African; and an African innovation strategy that builds on domestic capacities. The contributions describe an Africa that is creative, technological, and scientific, showing that African STI is the latest iteration of a long process of accumulative, multicultural knowledge production. Contributors Geri Augusto, Shadreck Chirikure, Chux Daniels, Ron Eglash, Ellen Foster, Garrick E. Louis, D. A. Masolo, Clapperton Chakanetsa Mavhunga, Neda Nazemi, Toluwalogo Odumosu, Katrien Pype, Scott Remer

Download or read book The Last Digital Frontier 101 written by Earl Prinn and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-18 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa has the world's oldest record of human technological achievement: the oldest stone tools in the world have been found in eastern Africa, and later evidence for tool production by our hominin ancestors has been found across Sub-Saharan Africa. The history of science and technology in Africa since then has, however, received relatively little attention compared to other regions of the world, despite notable African developments in mathematics, metallurgy, architecture, and other fields. The Last Digital Frontier Book tells a long-overdue and timeless story of the rise of mankind in Africa, uncovers inventions and innovations across the continent throughout time, and paints a forecast of its digital revolution in the 21st century and beyond. The Last Digital Frontier Book provides a compelling historic and forward-looking exploration of "the last digital frontier" of access and inclusion, Africa, and its potential to lead, host, and create the innovation breakthroughs of the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.
