It argues that appreciation of these ideas is essential to an understanding of past and present African behaviour. Before European conquest, many African men cultivated heroic honour, others admired the civic virtues of the patriarchal householder, and women honoured one another for industry, endurance, and devotion to their families. These values both conflicted and blended with Islamic and Christian teachings. Colonial conquest fragmented heroic cultures, but inherited ideas of honour found new expression in regimental loyalty, respectability, professionalism, working-class masculinity, the changing gender relationships of the colonial order, and the nationalist movements which overthrew that order. Today, the same inherited notions obstruct democracy, inspire resistance to tyranny, and motivate the defence of dignity in the face of AIDS.

It focuses particularly on the development of the Ugandan economy and demonstrates how the economy became structurally dependent on world capitalism during the colonial period and how this has affected its subsequent development. The book also deals with the political and social tendencies which shaped Ugandan society in both the colonial and postcolonial period. The first four chapters examine the initial colonial occupation and the colonial state’s role in the rural nexus of chiefs, peasants and migrant workers. They also look at the colonial state and the context of the wider national, regional and international economy and analyse the African nationalist response and the formation of political parties to take control of the postcolonial state. The second part of the book considers the political alliances and economic strategies of the Obote regime and the events of Amin’s military regime. The epilogue looks at events since the fall of the Amin regime and suggests ways in which Uganda may be able to tackle its underlying economic problems.

By looking at the relative staying power and adaptability of these traditional polities, the editor reveals the structural regularities behind variations of culture, leadership, and historical experience. The case studies included in this book also demonstrate the vital importance of monarchical symbols, leadership patterns, and strategic maneuverings for an understanding of the durability and viability of African kingships. It further shows how the actions of individual monarchs may have contributed to the survival or demise of their respective kingdoms, taking into account the obstacles arising from structural and environmental constraints. The institution of kingship thus emerges as a significant variable in the analysis of political change in contemporary Africa. This book stands as an important contribution to the political anthropology of contemporary Black Africa.

Long-distance trade across the region was facilitated by a highly complex multi-currency system undergirded by shared ideas that transcended ethno-linguistic, religious and class divisions. Currencies also occupied key roles in local spiritual, aesthetic and affective practices. Foregrounding these tensions between the global/universalistic and the local/particularistic, the volume shows how this traditional currency system remained in place until the middle of the twentieth century, and how aspects of the system continue to inform monetary practices throughout the region. Slavery was more important in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa than often has been assumed, and Africans from the interior played a more complex role than was previously recognized. The contributors challenge the assertion that domestic slavery increased in Africa as a result of the international trade.
