Book Launching the Partnership and Assessing the Challenges Ahead

Download or read book Launching the Partnership and Assessing the Challenges Ahead written by Ferdinandus Agung Prasetyo and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kalimantan Forest Partnership comes under the umbrella of the Asia Forest Partnership (AFP). It arose from a commitment made in 2002 at the World Summit in Johannesburg by the Netherlands’ Government to support the AFP’s efforts to promote sustainable forest management in Kalimantan, Indonesia. The Kalimantan activities are promoting collaboration among various parties and stakeholders, and linking improved forest governance in Kalimantan to international trade in Asia and Europe. This report details the lessons learned from the collaborative activities in Kalimantan. It also examines the current state of forest governance in Indonesia, the conversion of forest lands, and how international markets might influence Indonesia and Kalimantan’s forestry sector. The report also looks at the Kalimantan forest partnership’s response to regional problems, overviews its successes and analyzes its capacity building initiatives. The report also offers several recommendations for helping to ensure the partnership achieves its stated goal of “improved forest governance and sustainable forest management”.

Book The Dry Forests and Woodlands of Africa

Download or read book The Dry Forests and Woodlands of Africa written by Emmanuel N. Chidumayo and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2010 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dry forests and woodlands of Sub-Saharan Africa are major ecosystems, with a broad range of strong economic and cultural incentives for keeping them intact. However, few people are aware of their importance, compared to tropical rainforests, despite them being home to more than half of the continent's population. This unique book brings together scientific knowledge on this topic from East, West, and Southern Africa and describes the relationships between forests, woodlands, people and their livelihoods. Dry forest is defined as vegetation dominated by woody plants, primarily trees, the canopy of which covers more than 10 per cent of the ground surface, occurring in climates with a dry season of three months or more. This broad definition - wider than those used by many authors - incorporates vegetation types commonly termed woodland, shrubland, thicket, savanna, wooded grassland, as well as dry forest in its strict sense. The book provides a comparative analysis of management experiences from the different geographic regions, emphasizing the need to balance the utilization of dry forests and woodland products between current and future human needs. Further, the book explores the techniques and strategies that can be deployed to improve the management of African dry forests and woodlands for the benefit of all, but more importantly, the communities that live off these vegetation formations. Thus, the book lays a foundation for improving the management of dry forests and woodlands for the wide range of products and services they provide.

Book The Politics and Economics of Indonesia s Natural Resources

Download or read book The Politics and Economics of Indonesia s Natural Resources written by Budy P Resosudarmo and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2005 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges in using and managing natural resources in Indonesia are immense. They include ensuring that resource utilisation benefits most Indonesians; optimising the rate of exploitation of mineral reserves, bearing in mind the interests of future generations; and achieving sustainable forest and maritime exploitation. Recent rapid political change under reformasi and decentralisation may seem to have provided opportunities for a long-term development path that embraces both resource sustainability and equity issues. However, they have also generated an environment of political uncertainty, weak law enforcement, increased insecurity of property rights and local conflicts. This situation, together with the post-crisis imperative of restoring socio-economic progress, has created a pressing need to address the challenges of proper utilisation and management of natural resources. This book examines these and related issues from a political, socio-economic, and environmental standpoint. 1st Reprint 2006

Book The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade

Download or read book The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade written by Edward B Barbier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1994, The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade provides a detailed analysis of the economic linkages between the trade and forest degradation. Based on a report prepared for the ITTO, it looks current and future market conditions at the time of publication, and assesses the impacts on current and future market conditions, and assesses the impacts on tropical forests of both the international timber trade and domestic demand. The authors examine the causes of deforestation and compare the environmental impacts of the timber trade with other factors, such as the conversion of the forests to agriculture. Finally, they assess the national and international trade policy options, and discuss the potential role of interventions in the international timber trade in promoting efficient and sustainable use of forest resources. The book will be of interest to those concerned with forest management and policy, trade and environment, and with the economics of conversation and resource use.
