Book Revivals and Revival Work Classic Reprint

Download or read book Revivals and Revival Work Classic Reprint written by W. T. Hogg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revivals and Revival Work The subject matter of this little volume was prepared originally as a new chapter for the authors work on Homiletics and Pastoral Theology, and, as here produced, was printed from plates made for that work. Owing to this fact, the form of its present appearance is different from what it otherwise would have been, and the foot notes, some of which refer to the preceding chapters of the larger work, necessarily appear in this volume. Of course, an exhaustive treatment of so important and broad a subject as that which forms our title would be impossible within the limits of so small a volume as this. Trusting, however, that, with all its imperfections, it will be found to contain some inspiring thoughts for devout readers, and some valuable hints and suggestions to those who aspire to be useful in winning souls, this unpretentious contribution to the literature of revivals is now commended to the Christian public by The Author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revival and After the Revival In the many-sided social kingdom, Where men live out the hidden mysteries of the soul in busi ness, in politics, in literature, we see the same al ternations, the swing from zeal to apathy, from apathy to zeal, from diligence to indolence, and back again to diligence. Fluctuation is the law of all human affairs. There are ups and downs in all things. Homes have them. Lovers learn to interpret them. The political history of every country is a history of decline and of revival. In all departments of trade revivals occur. Whether they are normal or abnormal, whether necessary steps in a universal progression or reao tions from a culpable neglect, the fact remains that every-where human nature is familiar with move ments known as revivals; and wise men recog nize, study, and utilize these phenomena that the greatest good may come out of them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revival Sketches and Manual: In Two Parts IT is now more than thirty years since it struck me that a concise history of revivals from about the beginning of the nineteenth century might be accept able to the churches, as a sort of Christian manual to help the cause of pure and undefiled religion in the present and in the generations following. Having come upon the stage just at the commencement of that memorable epoch, and witnessed many revivals, I was moved to inquire whether the duty of attempting to gather and arrange-the materials for such a history to the praise of sovereign redeeming mercy devolved upon me. I consulted Dr. Griffin on the subject, than Whom few men had larger experience in revivals. He encouraged me to go on, and I made some collection of the narratives, which were within my reach. But I soon became convinced that to do any thing like justice to the glorious theme, Within reasonable lim its, was a task beyond my powers, and for which I then could not command the time. As professional and public duties soon became more exacting and arduo'us, I dismissed the subject, and there the matter rested for more than twenty years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Times of Refreshing: A History of American Revivals From 1740-1877, With Their Philosophy and Methods In presenting this book on American Revivals the author is very conscious that he has not compassed his subject. He has written in the hope of helping the Church in her present revival work. He has therefore given much space to an account of present revival movements. Such an account must of necessity he rather of the nature of a sketch than of a history. The limits of this hook have forbidden any exhaustive consideration of the early history of revivals in this country. Indeed, it has hardly been necessary to the purpose in view, which has been to show the thread of common teaching and endeavor running through all these years. While methods have differed in different periods, the essential elements of Divine Truth and Divine Grace are the same at all times. Amid the whirl of the revival scenes of this day, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to write an abiding history of these times. That can better be done in the perspective of other days. That has not been attempted. The practical aim of furthering the gospel by giving a report of its triumphs has been steadily held in view. As a season of revival is one of great encouragement, so it has been hoped the history of God's dealing with the American church in this regard would be a mighty stimulus for future activity and conquest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revival and Its Lessons: A Collection of Fugitive Papers, Having Reference to the Great Awakening The short papers here for the first time gathered, had a certain measure of acceptance, less from their own merit, than from their having been struck off during the prevalence of an unusual interest in divine things. For the most part they were penned in the intervals of a hurried life, with the hope that Scrip tural instruction of the simplest kind might gain a hearing, at a time when every one's attention was drawn to the work of God in the land. Book History and Character of American Revivals of Religion Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Character of American Revivals of Religion The publication of this little volume may perhaps demand an apology. And it is hoped by the Author, that it may seem as reasonable, as it is simple. Soon after his arrival in London, he received a note from an esteemed and reverend brother, re questing him to deliver a discourse in his chapel on American Revivals. The Author answered the note, that he would take the request under consideration. The demand was altogether unanticipated, the topic delicate, and difficult of treatment before a popular assembly, -but yet interesting, and so far as the Author could learn, im portant in the eyes of British Christians; as the religious public in England were yet in suspense, as to the opinion proper to be entertained on the subject, on account. Book Revivals of Religion

Download or read book Revivals of Religion written by James Porter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revivals of Religion: Their Theory, Means, Obstructions, Uses and Importance; With the Duty of Christians in Regard to Them Revivals of Religion are of the highest importance, involving spiritual interests for time and eternity. The greatest force of argument, is hardly sufficient to do them justice, and secure the attention they deserve. They need to be discussed in every rank and condition of society, that the scattered light of experience and observation may be collected to a focus, and made effective in arousing the friends of God to suitable action. But nearly all the works upon the subject, now in circulation, are from the same general source, and are based and executed in subordination to a system of theological technicalities, for which many have little sympathy. While they contain much that is excellent, they err in attributing to God what properly belongs to man. With this, some of them advocate other errors scarcely less dangerous. Their generic cognomen is, "New Divinity." Unlike the system just named, it attributes almost every thing to man. He has "natural ability," it is said, to repent, to convert himself, to change his own heart, to love God, &c. Thus the two extremes meet, and figure in the same volume. Yet, notwithstanding this hypothetical jangling, truth and light are seen flashing in every direction. But they are so intermingled with these conflicting errors, they fail of the gracious influence that might otherwise be exerted. Book Revival Sermons Classic Reprint

Download or read book Revival Sermons Classic Reprint written by Daniel Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revival Sermons My feeling toward my father, and ever Since I can remember, has been such, that I have at times feared the Apostle would have condemned it as an inordinate affection, and yet there is this excuse for me, that every member Of his household, our ser vants even, sinned in the same way, if not to the same degree. Certain it is, that the disease Of which my mother died, was my father's, death, for she never held up her head after that befell and hastened to rejoin him within a very few months. Wherever he was known, and according to his degree Of acquaintanceship, he was beloved. Because with all, as with his own family, it Was distinctly a Christian affection which he inspired, and there fore an affection the deepest and most durable of all. When I prepared his Life and Labors, for the press I endeavored to guard myself, and him, from any excess of love and, perhaps, the large circulation to which that volume has attained, in the Old World and the New, as well as the absence of any criticism in the matter, is proof that the self-control was sufficient. In my Story of Carter Quarterman my father, under the transparent disguise of Dr. Quarterman, is portrayed with a freer hand, yet even there I have regarded Truth as more sacred than the one I loved only a little more, at last, than how many thousand! Their meetings are largely arranged with a view to attract young people and to maintain social amusements. Reunions, festi vals, fairs, sociables, and all that, succeed each other so rapidly, and with such momentum, that church life vies with the world of fashion in keeping out of the mind all thought about our Christian duties and interests.
