Book excerpt: In every era the church needs revival—certainly today as much as ever. And in the heart of every committed Christian there is the longing for personal revival—to know the quality and depths of spiritual reality, and the presence of God in one's personal life. This was the deepest desire of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, one of the great 20th-century Bible expositors. It was also the purpose behind this series of messages which were first given on the 100th anniversary of the Great Revival which started in Wales, and swept across England and throughout the United States and to the far corners of the world. As Dr. Lloyd-Jones recognized, it is a rare time in the history of the church when there is a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit— and a time of special interest of every Christian who longs for revival today. As Dr. J. I. Packer writes in his foreword, Dr. Lloyd-Jones believed in "the necessity of revival—that is, a quickening divine visitation—as the only vent that can avert ultimate spiritual disaster. The thrustful urgency of the sermons in this book testifies to the depth of his conviction that without revival in the church there is really no hope for the Western world at all." Dr. Lloyd-Jones deftly draws principles from the lives of Old and New Testament characters as well as expounding some of the great prayers of the Bible. Clearly and forcefully, he presents a masterful exposition of the circumstances accompanying revival in the past, why each generation needs it, and how it will come about today. We must come to the sovereign God, forsake our sin, and wait upon Him for this special, essential outpouring. God, bring us revival!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John and His Friends: A Series of Revival Sermons The sermons contained in this volume were de livered in the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Cleveland, of which I am pastor, in a series of re vival meetings, beginning with watch-night, and continuing through the month of January, 1899. The themes had been selected long before and material gathered from time to time, but they were finally prepared, and dictated to my steno grapher day by day as delivered. A very gracious revival of religion was awakened by their delivery, and a large number of persons were converted and received into the church as the result. The other volumes of this series, including Christ and His Friends, The Fisherman and His Friends, and Paul and His Friends, have received such a widespread welcome not only in this country, but throughout the English-speaking world, that I am encouraged to hope that the present volume will be at least as valuable as any that have gone before it in suggestive and illustrative material, for all those who count it their greatest joy in life to win souls to Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 14, 2011, when I was in Kandergrund in the Bernese Highlands in Switzerland an important connection became very clear to me. I recognized a spiritual cause for why we are losing part of our youth. I was very shocked. I thought of my children and grandchildren. Since then I have been intensively occupied with this subject. Now I believe that the same spiritual cause is behind many of our problems; specifically the personal problems, in the local churches and the world-wide church. It is the lack of the Holy Spirit. If this is the cause, then we should urgently address this issue. If the cause can be eliminated or considerably reduced, then many problems will become superfluous or will be resolved.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paul and His Friends: A Series of Revival Sermons The sermons contained in this volume were preached in the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Cleveland, Ohio, during the month of January, 1898, in a series of evangelistic meetings. The themes had been selected two years before and illustrations had been gathering during all that time; but each sermon was finally outlined and dictated to a stenographer on the day of delivery. One of the most gracious revivals I have ever known in my pastoral work accompanied their utterance. The blessing of God made them at that time a message of salvation to many hearts, and I pray for His continued blessing upon them as they go out in printed form. The other volumes of revival sermons which I have pub lished have met with so wide a welcome in all parts of the english-speaking world that I am on couraged to hope that these discourses will bring suggestive and illustrative material to the hand of preachers, Sunday-school teachers, and soul-win. Excerpt: ... over whom so many tears have been shed! O be persuaded to come into the ark! In the great and dreadful day of judgment you will need a Saviour; O, embrace him now. Cast in your lot with your pious friends, and with them be safe and happy, now and for evermore. May the God of heaven touch your heart, and incline you to do that which you will wish you had done in that day which shall disclose "a God in grandeur and a world on fire." SERMON VIII. WAR IN nEAVEN. Rev. xii. 7,8.--And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. The visions of John in the Isle of Patmos, are, in general, mysterious and sublime, But, although their mystical and prophetic import may not be fully understood, they may, nevertheless, suggest many useful and awakening thoughts. The passage at present under consideration is not entirely free from difficulty; and commentators have different views of the subject. Some suppose that by the dragon, we are to understand the Pagan Roman Empire; by Michael, the Christian Roman Empire; by Heaven, the throne of the Roman Emperors; and by the war in heaven is meant the different and opposite counsels of Pagan and Christian Roman Emperors. Without attempting to settle the mystical or prophetic import of the passage, I wish, at this time, to consider it as pointing to an event which literally took place in heaven; an event most memorable indeed; which has awakened the attention of the universe, changed the face of creation, and has been productive of most direful consequences to angels and to men: I mean the fall of rebel angels in heaven. My brethren, God is the Creator and Sovereign of the...
