Book Pentecost To The Present Book Three

Download or read book Pentecost To The Present Book Three written by Jeff Oliver and published by Bridge Logos Inc. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without knowing the Holy Spirit's work in history, we cannot possibly understand what He is doing today, much less prepare for what He will do. In this third and final installment, the reader will learn how Charles Parham founded the modern Pentecostal baptism with speaking in tongues, how Evan Roberts gained worldwide attention through the 1904-05 Welsh revival, and how William Seymour spearheaded an international Pentecostal movement from Azusa Street in Los Angeles in 1906. The reader will learn how Pentecostalism spawned new denominations, national and international ministries, global renewal movements, and inspired innovators to take modern revivalism to a whole new level. Then when Pentecostalism penetrated American Middle-class Protestantism, many observers began speaking of a "third force" in Christianity. Meanwhile, revolutionary changes in the Catholic Church opened the door for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Then, just as the charismatic movement was beginning to subside in America, it went global, as charismatic mega churches, Bible schools, and television networks took the message of renewal to the world. The twenty-first century has witnessed a dramatic shift in Christianity to the Southern Hemisphere fueled, in part, by the global rise of Pentecostalism, with many new movements on the horizon.

Book excerpt: Practical and Gospel-centered thoughts on how to have a fruitful ministry by one of America's leading and most beloved pastor. Many church leaders are struggling to adapt to a culture that values individuality above loyalty to a group or institution. There have been so many "church growth" and "effective ministry" books in the past few decades that it's hard to know where to start or which ones will provide useful and honest insight. Based on over twenty years of ministry in New York City, Timothy Keller takes a unique approach that measures a ministry's success neither by numbers nor purely by the faithfulness of its leaders, but on the biblical grounds of fruitfulness. Center Church outlines a balanced theological vision for ministry organized around three core commitments: Gospel-centered: The gospel of grace in Jesus Christ changes everything, from our hearts to our community to the world. It completely reshapes the content, tone, and strategy of all that we do. City-centered: With a positive approach toward our culture, we learn to affirm that cities are wonderful, strategic, and under-served places for gospel ministry. Movement-centered: Instead of building our own tribe, we seek the prosperity and peace of our community as we are led by the Holy Spirit. "Between a pastor's doctrinal beliefs and ministry practices should be a well-conceived vision for how to bring the gospel to bear on the particular cultural setting and historical moment. This is something more practical than just doctrine but much more theological than "how-to steps" for carrying out a ministry. Once this vision is in place, it leads church leaders to make good decisions on how to worship, disciple, evangelize, serve, and engage culture in their field of ministry—whether in a city, suburb, or small town." — Tim Keller, Core Church

Book excerpt: "'What in the World is God Doing?' asks Vinson Synan. Evil has swept the earth in the twentieth century-the bloodiest in human history. Yet this century has also seen an astounding outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Writing with both a historian's perspective and prophetic urgency, Synan helps us understand our times. Today, God is giving great gifts in times of great trouble. In the Latter Days, describes the Pentecostal outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the twentieth century. It is the greatest revival in human history. It has touched millions of lives, reached across denominational barriers, restored spiritual gifts to Christian life, and permanently reshaped Christianity. The Pentecostal movement began humbly in a Kansas farmhouse and a shabby Los Angeles meeting hall. It spread rapidly throughout the U.S., spawning several new fast-growing denominations, and within a few decades had taken hold in every continent. Then, in the 1960s, even Pentecostal Christians were amazed when a neo-Pentecostal movement erupted in the mainline Protestant denominations and the charismatic renewal unexpectedly appeared in the Catholic Church. In the Latter Days tells the whole dramatic story of God's Pentecostal working our day--a day of great evil and--a day of great blessing."--Publisher's information.

Book The Spirit of Revival With the Complete Modernized Text of The Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Spirit of God

Download or read book The Spirit of Revival With the Complete Modernized Text of The Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Spirit of God written by R. C. Sproul and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2008-01-14 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key figure during the Great Awakening, Jonathan Edwards wrote this important discourse, The Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Spirit of God, in 1741, just after the revival had reached its peak. In his thorough exploration of the true and false signs of revival, drawn from 1 John 4, Edwards concludes that while a movement may be accompanied by excesses and questionable actions, these signs do not necessarily disqualify it as authentic. In a refreshing way Edwards embraces a genuine enthusiasm in these manifestations while stressing the need for biblical discernment. His critique is kind and gentle as he points to the true marks of revival: love and humility. In The Spirit of Revival, Parrish makes Edwards's entire work more accessible by modernizing the text and adding explanatory notes. R. C. Sproul's extended introduction compares the great theologian's time to our own, and the preface by Edwards's contemporary William Cooper rings resoundingly to the people of God today. Edwards's message provides more than just insight into the Great Awakening. It is a map to follow for all revivals in all times.

Book Pursuit of Spiritual Renewal

Download or read book Pursuit of Spiritual Renewal written by Chima E. Umejiaku and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all yearn for revival in our quest to maintain closeness with God. Inside this book you will find process of achieving spiritual renewal through some pertinent elements such as studying God's word, meditation, discernment, constant prayer, fasting, worship, and praises, and of course the Holy Spirit, who is the chief agent of spiritual renewal. These elements were discussed in detail to substantiate their importance in drawing individuals closer to God, and also responsible in bringing positive transformation and revival within the church which will ultimately have effect on the community. The first and second Great Awakenings in the United States occurred under George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards and Charles Finney, respectively. These great men understood the relevance of certain elements of spiritual renewal and lived them out during their time and throughout their ministerial endeavors. By so doing, they not only impacted their generation, but also left a wonderful legacy for the church community around the globe. If these elements of spiritual renewal are employed with meditative reflection, individual Christians in our time will achieve an unprecedented result just as the Old and New Testaments believers achieved under the leadership of some godly kings in Judah, the Southern kingdom of Israel. It was substantiated in this study that for any meaningful revival to occur within or outside Christian community the 5Rs in spiritual renewal must be present: repentance, return, renewal, revival and restoration. Spiritual renewal begins from the heart. Therefore, there must be spiritual heart transplant for a revival to occur, because a transformed heart is a renewed heart, and a renewed heart is a revived life. "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life" (Prov. 4:23). Chima Umejiaku is a Pastor of Christian Assembly Church in Lynn & Lowell, Massachusetts. He holds a doctoral degree in theology and two master's degrees; one in theology and another in special education, and also first degree in Special education. Recently he was co-opted as an adjunct instructor at IFCA Bible College, where he teaches Evangelism, Church planting and Church growth. He has been married to his beautiful wife Favour Umejiaku for twenty four years and they were blessed with a wonderful and talented son, JIL Chidirim Umejiaku. How does the gift of tongues operate in the life of the believer individually in private practice? How does the gift of tongues operate in the corporate assembly of God's church? Download or read book The Reason for God written by Timothy Keller and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-02-14 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller people can believe in—by "a pioneer of the new urban Christians" (Christianity Today) and the "C.S. Lewis for the 21st century" (Newsweek). Timothy Keller, the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, addresses the frequent doubts that skeptics, and even ardent believers, have about religion. Using literature, philosophy, real-life conversations, and potent reasoning, Keller explains how the belief in a Christian God is, in fact, a sound and rational one. To true believers he offers a solid platform on which to stand their ground against the backlash to religion created by the Age of Skepticism. And to skeptics, atheists, and agnostics, he provides a challenging argument for pursuing the reason for God.
