Book Revival of Piety Through an Islamic Theodicy

Download or read book Revival of Piety Through an Islamic Theodicy written by Tallal M Zeni and published by Tallal\Zeni. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of evil has confounded many who have pondered upon it and hindered many from attaining faith. In addition to surveying various Muslim and non-Muslim theodicies, this book proposes a multifaceted, complex and detailed theodicy. This theodicy will reconcile God's allowance of evil in this world with His holiness, wisdom, omnipotence, justice and generosity. It will also elucidate many of the Holy Lord's wise purposes such as manifesting the meanings and consequences of a greater number of His Beautiful Names, as well as bringing forth those whom He loves and favours, i.e. the prophets, the truly faithful, the martyrs and the righteous. In addition, it will become evident that Islam, through the Qur'an and Sunna of the Prophet Muhammad, provides the most coherent theodicy regarding this world and the Hereafter. That said, the objective of this theodicean knowledge is not solely an intellectual pursuit; rather, the greater objective of this book is to provide a practical theodicy. In doing so it will, by God's grace, allow the believers to achieve certainty and piety, and thereafter act righteously. Therefore, the ultimate goals are a revival of piety and a resurgence of righteousness. It is only in this fashion, and by God's providence and grace, that the evil in this world can be reduced and countered. The Book ContentsPart One Chapter One: God's Providence for Humankind Chapter Two: God's Beautiful Names and His Infallibility from any Evil Chapter Three: The Wisdom of God's Creation and Commandments Chapter Four: The Greatness of the Prophets Chapter Five: The Greatness of Muḥammad: The Seal of the Prophets Chapter Six: The Excellence of Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān and ʿAlī Chapter Seven: PietyPart Two Chapter Eight: Muslim Approaches to the Problems of Evil and Hellfire Chapter Nine: Non-Muslim Approaches to the Problems of Evil and Hellfire Chapter Ten: The Wisdom in Allowing Suffering Chapter Eleven: An Exposition on Evil Chapter Twelve: The Wisdom in Allowing Evil Chapter Thirteen: HypocrisyPart Three Chapter Fourteen: Hellfire Chapter Fifteen: Paradise EpilogueAbout the Author Tallal M. Book Theodicy and Justice in Modern Islamic Thought

Download or read book Theodicy and Justice in Modern Islamic Thought written by Ibrahim M. Abu-Rabi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the theology and philosophy of the distinguished modern Muslim scholar and theologian Bediuzzaman Said Nursi [d.1960]. Nursi wrote in both Ottoman Turkish and Arabic and his life and thought reflected the transition of modern Turkey from an empire to a secular republic. The contributors to this volume shed new light on two major dimensions of Nursi's thought: theodicy and justice. Classical Muslim theologians debated these two important issues; however, we must consider the modern debate of these issues in the context of the radical political and social transformations of modern Turkey. Nursi explored these matters as they related to the development of state and society and the crisis of Islam in the modern secular nation-state. Nursi is the founder of a 'faith movement' in contemporary Turkey with millions of followers worldwide. In this book, distinguished scholars in Islamic, Middle Eastern, and Turkish Studies explore Nursi's thought on theodicy and justice in comparison with a number of western philosophers, theologians, and men of letters, such as Dante, Merton, Kant, and Moltman. This book presents an invaluable resource for studies in comparative religion, philosophy, and Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies.

Book Islamic Theology and the Problem of Evil

Download or read book Islamic Theology and the Problem of Evil written by Safaruk Chowdhury and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rigorous study of the problem of evil in Islamic theology Like their Jewish and Christian co-religionists, Muslims have grappled with how God, who is perfectly good, compassionate, merciful, powerful, and wise permits intense and profuse evil and suffering in the world. At its core, Islamic Theology and the Problem of Evil explores four different problems of evil: human disability, animal suffering, evolutionary natural selection, and Hell. Each study argues in favor of a particular kind of explanation or justification (theodicy) for the respective evil. Safaruk Chowdhury unpacks the notion of evil and its conceptualization within the mainstream Sunni theological tradition, and the various ways in which theologians and philosophers within that tradition have advanced different types of theodicies. He not only builds on previous works on the topic, but also looks at kinds of theodicies previously unexplored within Islamic theology, such as an evolutionary theodicy. Distinguished by its application of an analytic-theology approach to the subject and drawing on insights from works of both medieval Muslim theologians and philosophers and contemporary philosophers of religion, this novel and highly systematic study will appeal to students and scholars, not only of theology but of philosophy as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst Christian approaches to the problem of evil have been much discussed, the issue of theodicy in Islam is relatively neglected. This book discusses possible solutions to theodicy and the problem of evil through the early philosophy and theology of Islam as well as through a semantic analysis of evil in the Qur'an. Reflecting on Said Nursi's magnum opus, the Risale-i Nur Collection (Epistles of Light), Yesilhark Ozkan puts Nursi's theodicy into discourse with so called 'secular' theodicy or 'anthropodicy'. Her study offers a fascinating new perspective on the problem of evil for scholars of comparative religion, philosophy of religion, and Islamic thought.

Book Ibn Taymiyya s Theodicy of Perpetual Optimism

Download or read book Ibn Taymiyya s Theodicy of Perpetual Optimism written by Jon Hoover and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-07-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Muslim jurist Ibn Taymiyya (d. 1328) is famous for polemic against Islamic philosophy, theology and rationalizing mysticism, but his positive theological contribution has not been well understood. This comprehensive study of Ibn Taymiyya’s theodicy helps to rectify this lack. Exposition and analysis of Ibn Taymiyya’s writings on God’s justice and wise purpose, divine determination and human agency, the problem of evil, and juristic method in theological doctrine show that he articulates a theodicy of optimism in which God in His essence perpetually wills the best possible world from eternity. This sets Ibn Taymiyya’s theodicy apart from Ashʿarī divine voluntarism, the free-will theodicy of the Muʿtazilīs, and the essentially timeless God of other optimists like Ibn Sīnā and Ibn ʿArabī.

Book God Evil and Suffering in Islam

Download or read book God Evil and Suffering in Islam written by Salih Sayilgan and published by . This book was released on 2023-10-25 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Salih Sayilgan explores the problem of evil and suffering in Islamic theology along with the questions that both religious and non-religious people alike perennially ask: Why is there evil and suffering? What is God's role in both natural and moral evil? If God is loving, just, powerful, why is there innocent suffering? Do humans have free will or are they predestined to act in a certain way? Examining both theoretical and practical theodicy in Islam, he provides Muslim perspectives on natural and moral evil in light of Islamic theological concepts. Sayilgan interrogates several specific topics related to evil and suffering, including death, sickness, aging, disability, climate change, and pandemics. These topics are explored through case studies from the lives of Muslims, with particular attention given to the American context. A comparative and dialogical study, Sayilgan's volume also engages with Zoroastrian, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, and Christian approaches, as well as non-religious perspectives. Book Toward an Islamic Theology of Nonviolence

Download or read book Toward an Islamic Theology of Nonviolence written by Adnane Mokrani and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book offers the first systematic study of the Qur’ān and Islamic history in the light of René Girard’s mimetic theory. Girard did not deal deeply with Islam, offering only scattered hints in some interviews after the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States. Addressing this gap in Girardian studies, Adnane Mokrani aims to develop an Islamic theology that goes beyond just war theory to adopt a radical nonviolent approach. He analyzes the Qur’ānic text and classical and modern exegetical literature, focusing on the Qur’ānic narratives, then extends his research to the history of Islam, removing the sacred character attributed to some events and human choices in order to disarm theology and dismantle the ideologies of power. This same critique is also applied to the unprecedented levels of violence in modern and contemporary history. A radical and politically committed theology of peace is needed to recover the spiritual dimension of religion that frees people from the temptations of the individual and collective ego. It is a mystical and narrative theology in dialogue with other world theologies on the future of humanity—an urgent appeal needed now more than ever.

Book Skepticism in Classical Islam

Download or read book Skepticism in Classical Islam written by Paul L. Heck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major treatment of skepticism in Islam, this book explores the critical role of skeptical thinking in the development of theology in Islam. It examines the way key thinkers in classical Islam faced perplexing questions about the nature of God and his relation to the world, all the while walking a fine line between belief in God’s message as revealed in the Qur’an, and the power of the mind to discover truths on its own. Skepticism in Classical Islam reveals how doubt was actually an integral part of scholarly life at this time. Skepticism is by no means synonymous with atheism. It is, rather, the admission that one cannot convincingly demonstrate a truth claim with certainty, and Islam’s scholars, like their counterparts elsewhere, acknowledged such impasses, only to be inspired to find new ways to resolve the conundrums they faced. Whilst their conundrums were unique, their admission of the limits of knowledge shares much with other scholarly traditions. Seeking to put Islam on the map of the broader study of the history of scepticism, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of Religion, History and Philosophy.
