Book excerpt: Excerpt from Getting Ready: For a Revival Great as are many of the mistakes made in the management of revival work, there is none, in my judgment, so general and disastrous as the neglect adequately to prepare for the coming special services, weeks, and even months in advance. The time was when preparation for a revival was impossible, for a preacher with from ten to forty appointments to serve could do little more than preach, holding a meeting here or there as the Spirit seemed to indicate. The rapid concentration of mind and heart possible to our simple minded fathers on account of the lack of other subjects of thought and feeling made preparation less necessary than it is now in this day of complex civilization with its unnumbered distracting elements. What was once a simple problem has become a greatly complicated one whose solution requires great fertility in expedients and indomitable patience. I was impressed with this fact at the very beginning of my ministry, and what little success the Lord has given me in winning souls has seemed largely due on its human side to the plans and methods employed in preparing the way for the revival service. It has seemed a duty to give an account of the general principles which guided me in this work with such plans and methods as would illustrate them, and make them more suggestive, as a help to others whose thoughts have not taken the same direction, or whose youth and inexperience would lead them to welcome practical suggestions in this important work. Book Revivals and Revival Work Classic Reprint

Download or read book Revivals and Revival Work Classic Reprint written by W. T. Hogg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revivals and Revival Work The subject matter of this little volume was prepared originally as a new chapter for the authors work on Homiletics and Pastoral Theology, and, as here produced, was printed from plates made for that work. Owing to this fact, the form of its present appearance is different from what it otherwise would have been, and the foot notes, some of which refer to the preceding chapters of the larger work, necessarily appear in this volume. Of course, an exhaustive treatment of so important and broad a subject as that which forms our title would be impossible within the limits of so small a volume as this. Trusting, however, that, with all its imperfections, it will be found to contain some inspiring thoughts for devout readers, and some valuable hints and suggestions to those who aspire to be useful in winning souls, this unpretentious contribution to the literature of revivals is now commended to the Christian public by The Author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revival Addresses The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. - Psalm xiv. L. I have taken, or rather God has given me, for my text to-night a very short one. I do not think you ever heard a sermon from a shorter text. I will not tell you where to find the text. It occurs several hundred times in the Bible. Indeed, open your Bible at random almost anywhere and you will find my text somewhere on the page. It consists of but one word; but it would take all eternity to exhaust its meaning, and then it will not be exhausted. It is God - a word the height and depth and length and breadth of whose meaning no phil osopher has ever fully apprehended. Book The Revival Manual Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Revival Manual Classic Reprint written by Luther Lee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revival Manual Infidelity assumes a variety of forms but in none is it more successful and more fatal, than when it appears robed in livery stolen from the Sanctuary, and goes forth as the friend and advocate of religion, and assumes to steady and guide the ark of God. In this form, and with these pretensions, many who design to be honest Christians, are deceived by it, and unsuspectingly embrace its errors, for the teachings of Christianity, who, should they meet it undisguised, would shun it as they would the hissing serpent. So far as the influences that emanate from unsanctified hearts is allowed to dictate the language of the pulpit, and direct the exercises of the sanctuary, it will constrain the one to speak such smooth things as will startle none from their own carnal repose, and muld the other into a form which will secure the friendship and support of an unrenewed world. In no one instance has this been more strikingly illustrated than on the subject of conversion and the means to be employed to procure conversions. Book How to Promote and Conduct a Successful Revival

Download or read book How to Promote and Conduct a Successful Revival written by Reuben Archer Torrey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Promote and Conduct a Successful Revival: With Suggestive Outlines The first edition of this book was published the year before we began our evangelistic tour around the world. For two years or more hundreds of us had been praying together for a world-wide revival and we had reached the point where we were absolutely sure that the revival was coming, and this book was prepared as a preparation for that revival and as a help to it. I had not decided at that time to go around the world. The decision was made shortly afterwards. In looking over the book since my return home, I have been surprised to see how closely we have followed the lines of action suggested in this book, and have been rejoiced to see how God has set His seal upon the principles enunciated in the book. At the time that the book was given to the public, the editor was known more as a Bible teacher and as a pastor than as an evangelist. His evangelistic activity had been largely confined to those churches of which he himself was pastor. Since the publication of the book, God has seen fit to lead him out into the evangelistic field and he has had the privilege of applying on a very wide scale the princi ples which he enunciates in the book and he has found that these principles work successfully, even beyond his own anticipation. I am more firmly convinced than ever of the truth of the statement found on the eighteenth page of the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John and His Friends: A Series of Revival Sermons The sermons contained in this volume were de livered in the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Cleveland, of which I am pastor, in a series of re vival meetings, beginning with watch-night, and continuing through the month of January, 1899. The themes had been selected long before and material gathered from time to time, but they were finally prepared, and dictated to my steno grapher day by day as delivered. A very gracious revival of religion was awakened by their delivery, and a large number of persons were converted and received into the church as the result. The other volumes of this series, including Christ and His Friends, The Fisherman and His Friends, and Paul and His Friends, have received such a widespread welcome not only in this country, but throughout the English-speaking world, that I am encouraged to hope that the present volume will be at least as valuable as any that have gone before it in suggestive and illustrative material, for all those who count it their greatest joy in life to win souls to Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revival and After the Revival In the many-sided social kingdom, Where men live out the hidden mysteries of the soul in busi ness, in politics, in literature, we see the same al ternations, the swing from zeal to apathy, from apathy to zeal, from diligence to indolence, and back again to diligence. Fluctuation is the law of all human affairs. There are ups and downs in all things. Homes have them. Lovers learn to interpret them. The political history of every country is a history of decline and of revival. In all departments of trade revivals occur. Whether they are normal or abnormal, whether necessary steps in a universal progression or reao tions from a culpable neglect, the fact remains that every-where human nature is familiar with move ments known as revivals; and wise men recog nize, study, and utilize these phenomena that the greatest good may come out of them. Book The Revival in Its Physical Psychical and Religious Aspects Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revival in Its Physical, Psychical, and Religious Aspects Tun striking forms taken by the Revival in Ulster have attracted so largely the attention of the public, that one main difficulty to a serious consideration of the subject has been overcome. All classes are satis fied, however various their modes of accounting for the revival movement, that they are in the presence of a great fact. Whether it be true, as so many think, that it is due to the direct working of the Holy Spirit, or as many others think, that it is the direct working of the Devil to lead souls astray, or as the Materialists think, that it is simply a reproduction, in a somewhat new form, of a physical disease, its facts are ac knowledged after the keenest scrutiny, and are testified by thousands of intelligent witnesses. This is a great point gained, for there have been many movements, which did not receive such acknow ledgment through the older days, of spiritual forces, not entirely similar in all their points of interest, but bearing a strong analogy with the now revival, and by the light of which, the true nature of what we are now inquiring into can be better discussed, and more broadly enquired into. Indeed from a review of those older movements, one is inclined to think that probably the newest thing about the present revival is the temper of the time upon which it has fallen, which has given so large an audience of atten tive listeners, and so many intelligent and enquiring Christian men, who, admitting its facts, want to know in what they originate, and how they are to be accounted for. This is the large enquiry, then, which is before us. Are these the days spoken of through the prophet Joel, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions, and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit 1 Or is the whole a snare of the Satan, against which we should raise the warning voice, and hold up the strong arm to repress it? Or shall we invoke the aid of medicine and drugs to restore that healthy condition of the body, the-want of which alone per mits the continuance of the phenomena which are brought so strikingly before us? For the most part they were penned in the intervals of a hurried life, with the hope that Scrip tural instruction of the simplest kind might gain a hearing, at a time when every one's attention was drawn to the work of God in the land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boston Revival, 1842: A Brief History of the Evangelical Churches of Boston, Together With a More Particular Account of the Revival of 1842 It Was a remark of President Edwards, that nothing tended mor'e to promote the work ofgrace among his people at Northampton, than to tell them what God was doing in other places If oral narratives produced this effect, then may we expect that written narratives will accomplish the same purpose. With a desire to honor God, and advance the interests of his kingdom, Edwards Wrote and published a work entitled Surprising Contrera sions at Northampton. Mr. Whitefield, before he came to this country, read this narrative, and was deeply inter-a asted in it. This induced him to visit Edwards, that he might see and converse with the man by whom God had wrought Such wonders. If Edwards judged it expe dient in his day, to collect and publish facts concerning the revival at Northampton, We shall not be thought to undertake a needless Work, if we shall attempt to gather up the history of the revival that took place in this city during the last winter and spring.
