Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revival Addresses The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. - Psalm xiv. L. I have taken, or rather God has given me, for my text to-night a very short one. I do not think you ever heard a sermon from a shorter text. I will not tell you where to find the text. It occurs several hundred times in the Bible. Indeed, open your Bible at random almost anywhere and you will find my text somewhere on the page. It consists of but one word; but it would take all eternity to exhaust its meaning, and then it will not be exhausted. It is God - a word the height and depth and length and breadth of whose meaning no phil osopher has ever fully apprehended. Fluctuation is the law of all human affairs. There are ups and downs in all things. Homes have them. Lovers learn to interpret them. The political history of every country is a history of decline and of revival. In all departments of trade revivals occur. Whether they are normal or abnormal, whether necessary steps in a universal progression or reao tions from a culpable neglect, the fact remains that every-where human nature is familiar with move ments known as revivals; and wise men recog nize, study, and utilize these phenomena that the greatest good may come out of them. Book The Great Revival of 1800 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Great Revival of 1800 Classic Reprint written by William Speer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Revival of 1800 From the earliest history of the world these periods of revival have been distinguished by the visitation of our race with such judgments as would compel men to think of their fallen, Sinful, helpless, perishing condition; of the in finite power and offended justice of God; of the necessity of a propitiation and atonement for sin in such ways as He might Offer; and of the duties of repentance, submission, obedience, and preparation for an account before Him. They have been ages of wars, pestilence, earthquakes, sud den and vast changes in social order, signs or discoveries in the heavens. Strange to tell, these judgments have irri tated rather than humbled God's enemies, and produced crimes more outrageous, unbelief more determined, and re sistance and persecutions of God's most beloved and faith ful messengers and servants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from May We Hope for a Great Revival? Within the last twelve months the Church of Christ in America has been visited with an extraordinary quickening. For once the embankments by which religious matter is shutout from the channels of secular intelligence were broken in; and even daily papers teemed with accounts of revivals and conversions. This great event has not been without its effect upon ourselves. Aspirations after a similar work of grace which existed before have been awakened afresh. On every hand good men may be heard asking one another, May we hope for a great revival? Some, it is true, not less desirous of the extension of Christ's kingdom than others, shrink from the idea of a revival, lest it Should be attended with extravagance, and bring forth none but ephemeral fruits. Some months ago two Ministers of the Gospel met on the top of an omnibus within a few miles of this city. Their con versation soon turned upon the remarkable news weekly coming from the religious bodies of America; and one of them ex pressed a hope that we might witness something similar amongst ourselves. The other replied, I have no faith in revivals; they do not leave any permanent results. Many years ago in the city of E I witnessed what appeared for the time to be a very powerful revival, but in a little while all the fruit of it had passed away. In the city of E re joined his friend. Several years ago, - was it about the time of the first visitation of the cholera? He learned that it was. And all the fruits disappeared? Completely, was the reply. It's strange, he said, that in a distant mission field I knew two Missionaries, both of whom had been con verted in that revival. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revival and Its Lessons: A Collection of Fugitive Papers, Having Reference to the Great Awakening The short papers here for the first time gathered, had a certain measure of acceptance, less from their own merit, than from their having been struck off during the prevalence of an unusual interest in divine things. For the most part they were penned in the intervals of a hurried life, with the hope that Scrip tural instruction of the simplest kind might gain a hearing, at a time when every one's attention was drawn to the work of God in the land. Book Revivals and Revival Work Classic Reprint

Download or read book Revivals and Revival Work Classic Reprint written by W. T. Hogg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revivals and Revival Work The subject matter of this little volume was prepared originally as a new chapter for the authors work on Homiletics and Pastoral Theology, and, as here produced, was printed from plates made for that work. Owing to this fact, the form of its present appearance is different from what it otherwise would have been, and the foot notes, some of which refer to the preceding chapters of the larger work, necessarily appear in this volume. Of course, an exhaustive treatment of so important and broad a subject as that which forms our title would be impossible within the limits of so small a volume as this. Trusting, however, that, with all its imperfections, it will be found to contain some inspiring thoughts for devout readers, and some valuable hints and suggestions to those who aspire to be useful in winning souls, this unpretentious contribution to the literature of revivals is now commended to the Christian public by The Author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of a Revival of Religion in the Third Presbyterian Church in Baltimore: With Remarks on Subjects Connected With Revivals in General Not that I failed to fulfil my stated appointments, when health and other circumstances would ad mit; but my preaching was not sufficiently plain, and pointed, and discriminating. Another great defect was, that I too seldom disturbed the con science of saint or sinner in private. I often conversed on the subject of religion; but it was in such a way, that 1 fear it did but little good. It is as necessary that we should be close, point ed, solemn, and pressing, when preaching the gospel to an individual, or to a few individuals, in private, as when we are addressing a multi tude in public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revival of Religion Which We Need: A Sermon, Delivered at Music Hall, Boston, on Sunday, April 11, 1858 I say the people feel this need but the need itself is greater and deeper than the popular consciousness thereof. We do not know how sick we are. Look at the chaotic state of things in America, which is but like the rest of Christendom. First, there is war. Fenced with a two-fold oceanic ditch, from two to seven thousand miles wide, we yet spend more than thirty millions of dollars every year to hire fighting men, in a time of profound peace; and not one of them fixes bayonet to do man kind good.
