Book excerpt: With estimates of their numbers ranging from one million to almost four million people, allied health care personnel make up a large part of the health care work force. Yet, they are among the least studied elements of our health care system. This book describes the forces that drive the demand for and the supply of allied health practitionersâ€"forces that include demographic change, health care financing policies, and career choices available to women. Exploring such areas as credentialing systems and the employment market, the study offers a broad range of recommendations for action in both the public and private sectors, so that enough trained people will be in the right place at the right time.

Book Balancing the Scales of Opportunity

Download or read book Balancing the Scales of Opportunity written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-02-01 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The underrepresentation of minorities in health and other professions has long cast a shadow over our nation's efforts to develop a more representative and productive society. Many programs have been developed to enlarge the presence of minorities in health careers, but these efforts have been unable to develop the infrastructure and momentum needed to produce and sustain an adequate number of minority professionals among the ranks of clinicians, researchers, and teachers. This book looks at the historical significance of this underrepresentation, presents data that define the problem, and identifies underlying factors that contribute to the failure to achieve fairness in opportunity. The volume examines programs that have made successful efforts to decrease underrepresentation and sets forth an action and research agenda for further enhancing the numbers of minorities in the health professions.

Book Pathways for Minorities Into the Health Professions

Download or read book Pathways for Minorities Into the Health Professions written by Pedro J. Lecca and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the scope and extent of minority underrepresentation in the health professions. Underrepresented minority groups include Afro-Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans. Drs. Lecca and Watts have cited a number of studies and papers describing trends in minority enrollment in health profession institutions. Among the areas which the authors focus on are the recruitment and admissions process which they note need intensive reexamination by higher education administrators and educators. They describe examples of academic enrichment and retention programs. They suggest that minority retention and the ultimate goal, increase in graduation, will only be achieved if financial and other forms of institutional and private/public support are forthcoming. The book concludes with some 'modest' recommendations.
