Book Revision of the Neotropical bark mantis genus Liturgusa Saussure 1869 Insecta Mantodea Liturgusini

Download or read book Revision of the Neotropical bark mantis genus Liturgusa Saussure 1869 Insecta Mantodea Liturgusini written by Gavin J. Svenson and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neotropical praying mantises of the genus Liturgusa (Saussure) are comprehensively treated after receiving little or no taxonomic attention after their original descriptions. All species are strictly associated with tree bark habitats and appear flattened and highly camouflage while also being adept runners that will actively hide by fleeing to the opposite side of a tree trunk if disturbed; some species have even been observed fluttering to the forest floor and playing dead. This work includes redescriptions of the genus and all previously described species, descriptions of three new genera and 19 new species, identification of four new synonyms, complete bibliographies for each species, a key to identify males and females, locality data for all examined specimens, measurement ranges for all species, diagnostic illustrations, and high resolution images of types and representative specimens. This work triples the known diversity of Neotropical bark mantises and documents their natural history as well as geographic distribution, which includes central Mexico south to Bolivia and east to southern Brazil.

Book The Neotropical Polymorphic Earless Praying Mantises

Download or read book The Neotropical Polymorphic Earless Praying Mantises written by Julio Rivera and published by Entomological Society of America. This book was released on 2020-05-18 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent phylogenetic studies on evolutionary relationships within the Acanthopoidea, known as “polymorphic earless praying mantises,” revealed numerous issues with the taxonomic status and morphological boundaries of many genera and species within this superfamily. The authors of this monograph present a thorough morphological assessment based on museum specimens and reexamination of type material, aimed toward redefining the morphological delineation of all Acanthopoidea genera, verifying the generic identity of all nominal species within the superfamily, and establishing taxonomic and nomenclatural foundations for future revisionary studies of acanthopoid genera. Their work resulted in numerous modifications in the taxonomy of this lineage, including the description of a new genus.

Book Dietary Supplements and Health

Download or read book Dietary Supplements and Health written by Gregory R. Bock and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dietary supplements can contain a wide variety of ingredients, either singly or in combination, including nutrients, botanicals and 'bioactive components' commonly found in foods. They are marketed and used by consumers for a range of reasons: to enhance "well-being", as traditional medicines, for health promotion or disease risk reduction, and as alternatives or complements to conventional drug therapies. On a global basis, the dietary supplement industry has enjoyed rapid growth, becoming a multi-billion dollar enterprise over the last 10 years. This growth has been associated with significant changes in both the types of products available and the reasons for using these products. In many cases, these changes have occurred without the benefit of a sound scientific basis for evaluating the safety and efficacy of these products under the new conditions of use and frequently the same limited scientific evidence is used, even though current product composition, user populations, purported beneficial effects, and conditions of use may differ significantly from the available evidence or historical usage. This book presents systematic examinations of the scientific data that are available and/or needed to substantiate and evaluate the safety and efficacy of dietary supplements. A series of case studies that are illustrative of the types of scientific challenges that have been encountered in substantiating safety and efficacy for various product types are employed to point out some of the successes but also frustrations that have occurred in recent years. Discussions among presenters and participants identify the lessons learned from these experiences and formulate ideas for improved approaches to identifying research needs and for enhancing the quality and relevance of the scientific evidence available for policy decisions. Dietary Supplements and Health constitutes a useful resource for nutritionists, biochemists, public health researchers and anyone interested in herbal, alternative medicines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an intoxicating tale of love and wonder, mothers and daughters, spiritual values and the grim legacy of slavery on the French Antillean island of Guadeloupe. Here long-suffering Telumee tells her life story and tells us about the proud line of Lougandor women she continues to draw strength from. Time flows unevenly during the long hot blue days as the madness of the island swirls around the villages, and Telumee, raised in the shelter of wide skirts, must learn how to navigate the adversities of a peasant community, the ecstasies of love, and domestic realities while arriving at her own precious happiness. In the words of Toussine, the wise, tender grandmother who raises her, “Behind one pain there is another. Sorrow is a wave without end. But the horse mustn’t ride you, you must ride it.” A masterpiece of Caribbean literature, The Bridge of Beyond relates the triumph of a generous and hopeful spirit, while offering a gorgeously lush, imaginative depiction of the flora, landscape, and customs of Guadeloupe. Simone Schwarz-Bart’s incantatory prose, interwoven with Creole proverbs and lore, appears here in a remarkable translation by Barbara Bray.

Book Once Upon A Tender Time

Download or read book Once Upon A Tender Time written by Carl Muller and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2000-10-14 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once Upon a Tender Time, a poignant tale of childhood, is the concluding part of Carl Muller's Burgher trilogy. The Burghers of Sri Lanka, hardy and fun-loving, produce children by the dozen-but often forget them. Carloboy Prins von Bloss and his companions are usually considered a pain in the neck by the adults they encounter as they go about the serious business of discovering the world and, primarily, the facts of life. Romps in the backyard, trysts in deserted houses and long bicycle rides to discover true love are commonplace. Also frequent are thrashings and canings as adults try to do.
