He also discusses classification and distribution, external anatomy and biology, and techniques for collecting, rearing, and preparing specimens for study. The heart of the book comprises two chapters. The second includes keys and descriptions of galls and other damage caused by the midges, with known hosts.

The catalogue is based on the most complete world classification of the geometrids, the card index to genera and species in The Natural History Museum, London. The two volumes include information on type specimens, type localities and, where possible, larval foodplants.
