Download or read book Revision of the Classification of the Oscillatoriaceae written by Francis Drouet and published by Academy of Natural Sciences. This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovered the extent of morphological variation of the individual species of Oscillatoriaceae, a group of algae which cover a substantial part of the earth¿s barren surfaces & constitute a goodly proportion of the conspicuous plants in its bodies of water. The capabilities of these algae for structural change during natural growth in diverse habitats, & in a single habitat as the environment changes, have been ignored. Plants deviating from the ¿typical¿ as a result of such variability have been interpreted as atypical or anomalous for the species concerned or have been described forthrightly as taxa new to science. The outcome of this investigation is comparable with that of a similar study of the coccoid Myxophyceae by Drouet & Daily (1956). Illustrations.
Download or read book Everglades written by Steve Davis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 31 chapters provide a wealth of previously unpublished information, plus topic syntheses, for a wide range of ecological parameters. These include the physical driving forces that created and continue to shape the Everglades and patterns and processes of its flora and fauna. The book summarizes recent studies of the region's vegetation, alligators, wading birds, and endangered species such as the snail kite and Florida panther. This referee-reviewed volume is the product of collaboration among 58 international authors from 27 institutional affiliations over nearly five years. The book concludes with a synthesis of system-wide restoration hypotheses, as they apply to the Everglades, that represent the integration and a collective viewpoint from the preceding 30 chapters. Techniques and systems learned here can be applied to ecosystems around the world.

Download or read book Lakes of New York State written by Jay A. Bloomfield and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lakes of New York State, Volume I: Ecology of the Finger Lakes describes the state of Finger Lakes, which is a group of eleven elongated bodies of water of glacial origin in the west-central portion of New York, and its respective watershed. This book assesses the structure of the Finger Lakes' plant and animal communities and how these communities interact with the abiotic components of the environment. The condition of the lakes from the standpoint of fish population dynamics are also analyzed, including an examination of the various physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the lakes' ecosystem. This text ranks the Finger Lakes into a unilateral trophic list by tabulating their trophic information according to three commonly used indicator measurements— average summer Secchi disc depth, average summer chlorophyll a concentration, and average winter total phosphorus level. This publication is valuable to limnologists and ecologists working on temperate zone freshwater lakes.

Download or read book The Blue Green Algae written by G Fogg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blue-Green Algae attempts to assemble a unified picture of blue-green algae as living organisms. It describes the organism's general features of form and structure, cellular organization, cell biology, gas vacuoles, and movements. The book addresses the culture, nutrition, growth, photosynthesis, chemosynthesis, heterotrophy, respiration, nitrogen metabolism, differentiation, reproduction, and life cycles of the blue-green algae. The organisms' freshwater and terrestrial ecology, pathogens, symbiosis, evolution, and phylogeny are also explained. These organisms form a substantial fraction of the biomass in several important types of habitat. Consequently, it is desirable to understand their activities if natural resources are to be conserved and used to best advantage. This book will be useful to students and research workers in this field of interest.
Download or read book Tempo and Mode in Evolution written by for the National Academy of Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-01-26 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since George Gaylord Simpson published Tempo and Mode in Evolution in 1944, discoveries in paleontology and genetics have abounded. This volume brings together the findings and insights of today's leading experts in the study of evolution, including Ayala, W. Ford Doolittle, and Stephen Jay Gould. The volume examines early cellular evolution, explores changes in the tempo of evolution between the Precambrian and Phanerozoic periods, and reconstructs the Cambrian evolutionary burst. Long-neglected despite Darwin's interest in it, species extinction is discussed in detail. Although the absence of data kept Simpson from exploring human evolution in his book, the current volume covers morphological and genetic changes in human populations, contradicting the popular claim that all modern humans descend from a single woman. This book discusses the role of molecular clocks, the results of evolution in 12 populations of Escherichia coli propagated for 10,000 generations, a physical map of Drosophila chromosomes, and evidence for "hitchhiking" by mutations.
