The book opens with the physical impacts, science, politics and economics of drought and climate change in rural Australia. It then highlights the cultural and historical dimensions — taking us to the Mallee wheat-belt, where researcher Deb Anderson interviewed farm families from 2004 to 2007, as climate change awareness grew. Book The Oxford Handbook of New York State Government and Politics

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of New York State Government and Politics written by Gerald Benjamin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-03 with total page 1056 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York remains the Empire State. Its trillion dollar economy makes the state a national-and often world-leader in banking, finance, publishing, soft services (law, accounting, insurance, consulting), higher education, culture, and the arts. With more than one in five of its residents having immigrated from elsewhere, New York State is an ethnic and social harbinger for an increasingly diverse nation. Recent years have found it, like many other big states, challenged to achieve effective governance. How is, can, or should such a state be governed? What is its history? What is its future? The Oxford Handbook of New York State Government and Politics offers an unusually comprehensive, detailed, and systematic study of this unique and influential state. The thirty-one chapters in The Oxford Handbook of New York State Government and Politics assemble new scholarship in key areas of governance in New York, document the state's record in comparison to other US states, and identify directions for future research. Following editor Gerald Benjamin's introduction, the handbook chapters are organized in five sections that look at the state constitution, state political processes, state governmental institutions, intergovernmental relations, and management and policy areas. Chapters address a wide array of topics including political parties, campaign finance policy, public opinion polling, elections and election management, lobbying and interest group systems, the state legislature, the governorship, the judiciary, the state's "foreign policy," education, health care policy, public safety, economic development, transportation policy, energy policy, and more. A final chapter, compiled by the state archivist, consists of a most extensive annotated bibliography of resources on state history, state political history, the state constitution, and state political processes. Chapter authors include both scholars of New York State and current and former state officials.

Book The New Spatial Planning

Download or read book The New Spatial Planning written by Graham Haughton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-04 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatial planning, strongly advocated by government and the profession, is intended to be more holistic, more strategic, more inclusive, more integrative and more attuned to sustainable development than previous approaches. In what the authors refer to as the New Spatial Planning, there is a fairly rapidly evolving maturity and sophistication in how strategies are developed and produced. Crucially, the authors argue that the reworked boundaries of spatial planning means that to understand it we need to look as much outside the formal system of practices of ‘planning’ as within it. Using a rich empirical resource base, this book takes a critical look at recent practices to see whether the new spatial planning is having the kinds of impacts its advocates would wish. Contributing to theoretical debates in planning, state restructuring and governance, it also outlines and critiques the contemporary practice of spatial planning. This book will have a place on the shelves of researchers and students interested in urban/regional studies, politics and planning studies.

Book The New Afrabia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chris Landsberg
  • Publisher : Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research
  • Release : 2007-06-12
  • ISBN : 9948008707
  • Pages : 18 pages

Download or read book The New Afrabia written by Chris Landsberg and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 2007-06-12 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, South Africa has emerged as a pivotal African state-one which seeks to give meaning and substance to the notion of Ali Mazrui’s “Afrabia,” by gearing its already crowded foreign policy agenda towards advancing strategic Afro-Arab relations. To this end, South Africa has articulated African, Arab and Middle East agendas. This has involved the positioning of the country in a way that allows it to become a critical player in shaping the development agenda of the continent, partly through its efforts in building and operating two pan-African bodies, namely the African Union (AU) and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). The Middle East occupies a high strategic plane in South Africa’s foreign policy. South Africa has pursued a very independent posture vis-à-vis the conflict in Iraq. Before the US-led coalition’s invasion in March 2003, President Mbeki and his envoys tried to encourage both the Western powers and Saddam Hussein’s regime to fulfill international obligations. Saudi Arabia, Syria and Iran remain key players despite their strained relations with the United States. South Africa has been openly concerned about the US posture towards these countries; it has stressed the right of Iran, as guaranteed by the NPT, to develop a civilian nuclear capability and program, and has called for the nuclear stand-off to be settled peacefully and through diplomatic means. For many years, the Arabian Gulf region has been of strategic importance to South Africa because it is the source of most of the Republic’s oil imports. Since 1999, South Africa’s economic interaction with the region has expanded significantly, partly as a result of bilateral agreements established with a number of the Gulf States, but also because South Africa considers the Gulf a strategic priority in terms of foreign policy. Since 1994, the Gulf States have become steadily more confident about South Africa as a reliable destination for investment and as a trustworthy supplier of goods and services. South Africa needs to work harder to cultivate a strong presence and identity in the Middle East, especially in the Gulf countries, where the opportunities for economic dividends are great. Enhancing opportunities in the Middle East will require a more strategic approach on the home front, and a multi-pronged approach that would see greater collaboration and harmonization between key actors involved in the management of the country’s external affairs and foreign policy.

Book Maritime Challenges and Priorities in Asia

Download or read book Maritime Challenges and Priorities in Asia written by Joshua Ho and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maritime issues are particularly important for Asian countries, where there is a high reliance on shipping routes for international trade, many difficult disputes over maritime boundaries, and the prospect of increasing tensions where maritime power might play a significant role. This book uses contributions by 17 experts to build a comprehensive survey of the maritime issues affecting Asia. It discusses the issues overall, goes on to examine the issues from the perspective of each of 14 key countries, and concludes by assessing the prospects for resolving common problems in order to preserve good order at sea.
