Download or read book Treating AIDS written by Thurka Sangaramoorthy and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an inherently powerful and complex paradox underlying HIV/AIDS prevention—between the focus on collective advocacy mobilized to combat global HIV/AIDS and the staggeringly disproportionate rates of HIV/AIDS in many places. In Treating AIDS, Thurka Sangaramoorthy examines the everyday practices of HIV/AIDS prevention in the United States from the perspective of AIDS experts and Haitian immigrants in South Florida. Although there is worldwide emphasis on the universality of HIV/AIDS as a social, political, economic, and biomedical problem, developments in HIV/AIDS prevention are rooted in and focused exclusively on disparities in HIV/AIDS morbidity and mortality framed through the rubric of race, ethnicity, and nationality. Everyone is at equal risk for contracting HIV/AIDS, Sangaramoorthy notes, but the ways in which people experience and manage that risk—and the disease itself—is highly dependent on race, ethnic identity, sexuality, gender, immigration status, and other notions of “difference.” Sangaramoorthy documents in detail the work of AIDS prevention programs and their effect on the health and well-being of Haitians, a transnational community long plagued by the stigma of being stereotyped in public discourse as disease carriers. By tracing the ways in which public knowledge of AIDS prevention science circulates from sites of surveillance and regulation, to various clinics and hospitals, to the social worlds embraced by this immigrant community, she ultimately demonstrates the ways in which AIDS prevention programs help to reinforce categories of individual and collective difference, and how they continue to sustain the persistent and pernicious idea of race and ethnicity as risk factors for the disease.

Book Understanding the HIV AIDS Epidemic in the United States

Download or read book Understanding the HIV AIDS Epidemic in the United States written by Eric R. Wright and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-30 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States using the concept of syndemics to contextualize the risk of both well-known, and a few lesser-known, subpopulations that experience disproportionately high rates of HIV and/or AIDS within the United States. Since discovery, HIV/AIDS has exposed a number of social, psychological, and biological aspects of disease transmission. The concept of “syndemics,” or “synergistically interacting epidemics” has emerged as a powerful framework for understanding both the epidemiological patterns and the myriad of problems associated with HIV/AIDS around the world and within the United States. The book considers the disparities in HIV/AIDS in relation to social aspects, risk behavior and critical illness comorbidities. It updates and enhances our understanding of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States and contributes to the expanding literature on the role of syndemics in shaping the public’s health.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9401101973
  • Pages : 426 pages

Download or read book Bioethics Yearbook written by B.A. Lustig and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: nology in New Zealand. Angeles Tan Alora reports on the Code of Pharmaceutical Marketmg Practices developed by the Pharmaceutical and Health Care Association of the Philippines. Ruud ter Meulen and his colleagues provide detailed analysis of the Remmelink Commission's report on euthanasia in the Netherlands. Kazumasa Hoshino discusses the fmdings of the Special Committee on Gene Therapy in Japan. As such examples suggest, the activities of many governmental groups and professional advisory bodies, although varied, tend to converge upon a number of especially important issues. If one peruses the index of documents discussed in Volume Four, certain topics are more often the focus of legislation and official concern than others: withholding and withdrawing treatment, access to health care, consent to treatment and experimentation, and issues posed by HIV testing and AIDS. Such a common focus should not be exaggerated, for the discussion of topics is wide-ranging. But that commonality, when in evidence, is also not surprising. It suggests that key issues and concerns in bioethics may be widely shared among modern cultures and societies, for all the distinctiveness of a particular nation's or region's response to them. Issues of informed consent, after all, implicate more fundamental matters of respect for persons and the rights of individuals in the contexts of therapy and research. Issues of access to medical care concretize deeper questions about the nature and scope of a society's welfare obligations to its citizens.

Book HIV AIDS Surveillance Report

Download or read book HIV AIDS Surveillance Report written by Anna Satcher Johnson and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents estimated numbers of cases of HIV/AIDS (cases of HIV infection, regardless of whether they have progressed to AIDS) from the 39 areas that have confidential name-based HIV infection reporting for a sufficient length of time (since at least 2003). These 33 states represent approx. 63% of the epidemic in the 50 states and the D.C. According to the number of reported AIDS cases, the 34 states with long-term HIV infection reporting represent approx. 66% of the cases in the 50 states and the D.C. From 2004 through 2007, the total number of new cases of HIV/AIDS increased 15% in the 34 states. This increase is likely due to changes in state reporting regulations and increases in HIV testing. Extensive charts and tables.
