Book Cyclic AMP Cell Growth and the Immune Response

Download or read book Cyclic AMP Cell Growth and the Immune Response written by W. Braun and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brilliant research of Dr. Earl Sutherland and his colleagues has had a broad impact on many areas of biology. Among the fields in fluenced rather late by the insights arising from this work were im munology and oncology. Although research relating cyclic AMP metabol ism to the development and manifestations of the immune response and the control of mammalian cell growth is relatively recent, the growth of knowledge in these areas has been rapid and there is already a considera ble amount of empirical information. This conference provided an oppor tunity to collate and begin to interpret that information. A deliberate at tempt was made to bring together investigators nominally involved in im munology, biochemistry, pharmacology, or cellular biology for in many instances parallel observations are being obtained in these fields. For ex ample, the immunologist studying the transformation of lymphocytes by antigens or mitogens is carrying out experiments that are very close to those of the biologist studying the growth of cells in culture; in both cases, the phenomena they observe are modulated by changes in the in tracellular level of cyclic nucleotides. Many other examples of closely analogous experiments in different fields could be cited, but perhaps the point is clear.

Download or read book Disease and Fertility written by Joseph A. Jr. McFalls and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disease and Fertility covers the diseases that can cause population subfecundity. This book is organized into six parts encompassing 20 chapters that provide detailed information on each of these diseases for evaluation of quantitative impact on fecundity and population fertility. After briefly presenting an overview of the demography of subfecundity, this book goes on exploring the pathophysiology and effect on fecundity of various diseases, which are classified into three groups. The first group includes the nonsexually transmitted diseases, such as tuberculosis, malaria, filariasis, schistosomiasis, African sleeping sickness, and Chaga's disease. The second group is composed of the sexually transmitted diseases, including gonorrhea, nongonococcal cervicitis and urethritis and their complications, syphilis, and genital herpes, mycoplasma, and chlamydia. The third group is composed f phenomena that can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and other adverse reproductive sequelae, such as induced abortion, childbirth, the intrauterine device, and female circumcision. The final chapter considers the problems encountered in trying to link a particular disease to the fertility of a specific population. This book is of great value to population students, workers in medical community, and professionals in disciplines that involve the study of both health and population.

The opening chapters describe the structural and functional development, as well as the molecular and cellular nature of the immune apparatus. The subsequent chapters deal with the relation of structure to function in the lymphoid system and its molecules. These topics are followed by discussions of the fundamental issues of tolerance, inflammation, immunological mediators and amplifiers, and immunogenetics. The remaining chapters explore the immunobiological aspects of transplantation, allergy, tumor immunity, autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, and immunosuppression. This book will be of great value to clinical immunobiologists, practicing physicians, researchers, and medical and biology students.

Book Humoral Control of Growth And Differentiation

Download or read book Humoral Control of Growth And Differentiation written by Joseph Lobue and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humoral Control of Growth and Differentiation, Volume I: Vertebrate Regulatory Factors is a part of two-volume work that introduces the reader to humoral control of growth and differentiation in vertebrates. This volume gives emphasis on chemical messengers, which have received relatively little attention in standard treatises on endocrine physiology for a number of reasons. Organized into three parts, this book begins with the physiological significance of chalones. This class of hormones is intimately associated with mitotic homeostasis as inhibitors of cell division. The book then looks into the aspects of blood cell formation and release, as well as the humoral control of organs and tissue growth. This volume also includes chapters discussing the humoral changes occurring in diseases of the blood and other pathologic states. The humoral factors influencing lymphocyte proliferation in culture are also explained. Moreover, this volume examines the effects of the more orthodox hormones upon skeletal growth and regeneration.

Book Anti inflammatory Agents Part II

Download or read book Anti inflammatory Agents Part II written by Robert Scherrer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicinal Chemistry: A Series of Monographs, Volume 13–II presents the context of inflammation and the therapeutic interventions in debilitating chronic inflammatory diseases. This book discusses the progress of therapeutics in the field of medicine with less cost but with the same degree of benefit. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with a discussion on the pathophysiological context of chronic inflammatory diseases. This book then explores the local hormones that act as alarm signals following a local injury, which includes serotonin, histamine, kinins, heparin, prostaglandin, adenylates, lysolecithins, and catecholamines. Other chapters feature contributors who have active research on the clinical evaluation and treatment of severely debilitating chronic inflammatory diseases, including gout, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriasis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. The final chapter explores the metabolism of anti-inflammatory drugs that are organized around chemical classes of compounds. This book is a valuable source of information for physicians, chemists, and experimental biologists.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06

Download or read book Immunochemistry of Proteins written by M. Zouhair Atassi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structural features responsible for the immunogenicity of certain parts of native protein molecules have been of interest to immunochemists and protein chemists for over three decades. Following the early work of Land steiner in 1942, which showed that peptide fragments from silk fibroin exhibited an inhibitory activity toward the reaction of the protein with its antibodies, fragments from many other protein systems have been isolated and studied. However, no concerted effort was (or could be) devoted to the elucidation of the complete antigenic structure of a protein. In order for these endeavors to be successful and meaningful, knowledge of both the amino acid sequence and the detailed three-dimensional structure of the protein is necessary. Such information was not available for a protein until early in the 1960s. This and the fact that protein chemistry was not in fact sufficiently developed early in the 1960s to enable the successful completion of the entire antigenic structure of a protein were major contributing factors for the slow progress in this field. Determination of the antigenic structures of proteins therefore posed a chemical challenge of enormous proportions. For these reasons, many investigators diverted their attention to study of the immunochemistry of homo- or mixed amino acid polymers in the hope that the information derived from these systems might prove useful in the understanding of the immunochemistry of proteins.
