Book Imperialism in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Imperialism in the Twenty First Century written by John Smith and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides an examination of the relationship between the core capitalist countries and the rest of the world in the age of neoliberal globalization. Deploying a Marxist methodology, Smith begins by tracing the production of certain iconic commodities--the T-shirt, the cup of coffee, and the iPhone--and demonstrates how these generate enormous outflows of money from the countries of the Global South to transnational corporations headquartered in the core capitalist nations of the Global North. From there, Smith draws on his empirical findings to theorize the current shape of imperialism. He argues that the core capitalist countries need no longer rely on military force and colonialism (although these still occur) but increasingly are able to extract profits from workers in the Global South through market mechanisms and, by aggressively favoring places with lower wages, the phenomenon of labor arbitrage. --From publisher description.

Book Talent Development for English Language Learners

Download or read book Talent Development for English Language Learners written by Michael S. Matthews and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-16 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Talent Development for English Language Learners offers concrete guidance to teachers, schools, and administrators seeking to maximize the potential of all of their students. Each chapter will focus thematically on an issue relevant to developing the talents and potential of gifted English language learners (ELLs) in inclusive educational settings. Examples of how schools or educators might conventionally conceptualize and handle the issues related to ELLs and what the concerns or unintended negative outcomes are for gifted ELLs are provided. The authors focus on what an “ideal” response might be from the lens of both the gifted education and the language education field, and how collaborative efforts across these perspectives yield effective interventions in schools and related educational settings for students who are both English language learners and highly academically able.

Book Changing Governance and Management in Higher Education

Download or read book Changing Governance and Management in Higher Education written by William Locke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: External drivers are pressing for a more privatized approach to higher education and research, a greater reliance on technology and the more efficient use of resources. This book analyzes recent changes in institutional governance and management in higher education and their impact on the academy and academic work. It draws on findings from an international study based on a survey of academics in eighteen countries. It opens with a chapter outlining the key issues, drivers and challenges that inform contemporary discourse around academic work and the profession in general. It then focuses on national case studies, comparing changes in the top tier with the lower tiers of national systems, public and private institutions, and other differentiating factors appropriate in each country, which include mature and emerging higher education systems. It concludes by proposing a series of generalizations about the contemporary status of governance and management of institutions of higher education.

Book The New Production of Expert Knowledge

Download or read book The New Production of Expert Knowledge written by Sotiria Grek and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book offers a novel perspective on the role of quantification in the making of education utopias through an analysis of expert knowledge and its producers. Drawing on empirical findings from the European Research Council funded project ‘International Organisations and the Rise of a Global Metrological Field’ (METRO, 2017-2022), Education, Quantification and Utopia focuses on the ways that metrological realism has constructed a well-supported epistemic infrastructure, built on relationships and practices that go beyond the mere objectivity and reliability of numerical evidence. The book’s chapters outline how the production of new forms of education expertise have led to ideational and institutional interdependencies, and ultimately the making of an intricate, fragmented and opaque knowledge and governance web.
