Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wolfert's Roost, and Miscellanies The biography of Mr. Paine presents another Of those melancholy details, too commonly furnished by literary life, - those gleams Of sunshine, and days Of darkness; those mo ments Of rapture, and periods Of lingering de pression; those dreams Of hope, and waking hours Of black despondency. Such is the rapid round Of transient joys and frequent sufl'erings that form the be all and the end all here, Of the unlucky tribe that live by writing. Surely, if the young imagination could ever be repressed by sad example, these gloomy narratives would be sumcient to deter it from venturing into the fairy land Of litera ture - a region so precarious in its enjoyments and fruitful in its calamities. Book excerpt: Stromata was the third in the trilogy of Clement of Alexandria and continues with the individual cases of conduct began in Paedagogus. Protrepticus, the first in the trilogy, deals with the religious basis of Christian morality and lays a foundation in the knowledge of divine truth. Paedagogus, the second and Stromata, third with the individual cases of conduct. As with Epictetus, true virtue shows itself with him in its external evidences by a natural, simple, and moderate way of living. Titus Flavius Clemens, known as Clement of Alexandria, was a Christian theologian who taught at the Catechetical School of Alexandria. A convert to Christianity, he was an educated man who was familiar with classical Greek philosophy and literature. Clement was influenced by Hellenistic philosophy to a greater extent than any other Christian thinker of his time, and in particular by Plato and the Stoics.

Book Manuscript Miscellanies in Early Modern England

Download or read book Manuscript Miscellanies in Early Modern England written by Dr Daniel Starza Smith and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps more than any other kind of book, manuscript miscellanies require a complex and ‘material’ reading strategy. This collection of essays engages the renewed and expanding interest in early modern English miscellanies, anthologies, and other compilations. Manuscript Miscellanies in Early Modern England models and refines the study of these complicated collections. Several of its contributors question and redefine the terms we use to describe miscellanies and anthologies. Two senior scholars correct the misidentification of a scribe and, in so doing, uncover evidence of a Catholic, probably Jesuit, priest and community in a trio of manuscripts. Additional contributors show compilers interpreting, attributing, and arranging texts, as well as passively accepting others’ editorial decisions. While manuscript verse miscellanies remain appropriately central to the collection, several essays also involve print and prose, ranging from letters to sermons and even political prophesies. Using extensive textual and bibliographical evidence, the collection offers stimulating new readings of literature, politics, and religion in the early modern period, and promises to make important interventions in academic studies of the history of the book.

Book A Critic in Pall Mall

Download or read book A Critic in Pall Mall written by Oscar Wilde and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critic in Pall Mall: Being Extracts From Reviews and Miscellanies As one enters Rome from the Via Ostiensis by the Porta San Paolo, the first object that meets the eye is a marble pyramid which stands close at hand on the left. There are many Egyptian obelisks in Rome - tall, snakelike spires of red sandstone, mottled with strange writings, which remind us of the pillars of flame which led the children of Israel through the desert away from the land of the Pharaohs; but more wonderful than these to look upon is this gaunt, wedge-shaped pyramid standing here in this Italian city, unshattered amid the ruins and wrecks of time, looking older than the Eternal City itself, like terrible impassiveness turned to stone. And so in the Middle Ages men supposed this to be the sepulchre of Remus, who was slain by his own brother at the founding of the city, so ancient and mysterious it appears; but we have now, perhaps unfortunately, more accurate information about it, and know that it is the tomb of one Caius Cestius, a Roman gentleman of small note, who died about 30 B.C. Yet though we cannot care much for the dead man who lies in lonely state beneath it, and who is only known to the world through his sepulchre, still this pyramid will be ever dear to the eyes of all English-speaking people, because at evening its shadows fall on the tomb of one who walks with Spenser, and Shakespeare, and Byron, and Shelley, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning in the great procession of the sweet singers of England.
