Book excerpt: The Strait of Georgia Creel Survey monitors recreational fishing activity throughout the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, and the Canadian portion of Juan de Fuca Strait. Monthly catch & effort statistics have been computed for nine statistical areas & 62 sub-areas. This report first describes the methods used in the Survey's three components (angler interview data to derive estimates of catch per effort and daily patterns of fishing activity, and aerial surveys to obtain an instantaneous count of boats actively fishing). It then discusses survey results with regard to sampling effort & precision, survey logistics, changes in the survey over 1983-99, and whether changes should be made to some components of the study design & data analysis system. Appendices include data tables & graphs and information on methods & equations used in analysis of catch & effort statistics.

Recreational fisheries also represent an important driver of coastal tourism, which constitutes one of the region’s most important maritime sectors in terms of gross value added and employment. However, despite their ubiquity and potential socio-economic contribution, recreational fisheries are a data-poor sector and can vary widely from one country to another, thus impairing proper consideration of the recreational fisheries sector in policy-making and undermining efforts towards sustainable fisheries management at the regional level. The main goal of this handbook is therefore to provide a clear methodological framework to allow Mediterranean and Black Sea countries to implement suitably harmonized sampling and survey monitoring schemes for recreational fisheries. This handbook establishes a minimum set of necessary information for monitoring recreational fisheries, while, at the same time, allowing for flexibility to accommodate national specificities and data collection needs. It also provide guidance on the data analysis process as well as advice to successfully engage stakeholders in the data collection process.

Book excerpt: Recreational fishing in the United States is an important social and economic component of many marine fisheries, with an estimated 14 million anglers making almost 82 million fishing trips in 2004. Although each individual angler typically harvests a small number of fish, collectively these sport fisheries can take a significant fraction of the yearly catch-in some cases more than commercial fisheries. For example, in 1999, recreational fishing accounted for 94% of the total catch of spotted sea trout, 76% of striped bass and sheephead, and 60 percent of king mackerel. It is important that systems used to monitor fishing catch are adequate for timely management of recreational fisheries. However, the large number of anglers and access points makes monitoring recreational fishing much more difficult than monitoring commercial fishing. This report reviews the types of survey methods used to estimate catch in recreational fisheries, including state/federal cooperative programs. The report finds that both telephone survey and onsite access components of the current monitoring systems have serious flaws in design or implementation. There are also several areas of miscommunication and mismatched criteria among designers of surveys, data collectors, and recreational fisheries. The report recommends that a comprehensive, universal sampling frame with national coverage should be established, and that improvements should be made in statistical analysis of the data collected and in the ways the data are communicated. A permanent and independent research group should be established and funded to evaluate the statistical design and adequacy of recreational fishery surveys and to guide necessary modifications or new initiatives.

Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The research disclosed that pile perch live at least 10 years. Males and females of given ages are close to the same size up to age IV, after which females are increasingly larger than males. The diet varies between seasons and localities. Pile perch are carnivorous feeders, obtaining food from the bottom or protruding surfaces in the littoral zone. Principal foods are barnacles, mussels, the bay clams, crabs, mud shrimp and tube dwelling amphipod. None of the pile perch examined was heavily parasitized. Infestations of gill copepods vary seasonally.
